i just thought ... if anyones using gradwell.com for their email along
with exchange you could also use the mail protocol ODMR for mail
delivery to your exchange mailbox.

gradwell supply a piece of software that initiates the odmr call and
turns it round into a local smtp delivery so basically you dont need to
open port 25 on your firewall at all unless you've got other reasons for
it or have odmr support in the mail server software as it is turned into
smtp.

odmr is like pop3 on steroids. all the routing problems by the mail
envelope being discarded does not happen with odmr so the mail gets
delivered to where it needs to be just like smtp.

i was using odmr with a mail server called mailtraq but since moving
jobs have been working with exchange.

no link with gradwell other than happy customer and thought id mention
it as it means you can close off port 25 and not have the exchange box
exposed at all unless you want it to be.

Haven't heard of it, but I see no problems opening up port 25 in a firewall.
There are a lot of companies who don't wish to expose their Exchange server
to the Internet - in that case, putting a cheap and cheerful Linux server in
the DMZ and installing Postfix/Sendmail to use as a relay is not a tough
thing. That way, you open up port 25 from WAN to DMZ, and also from DMZ to
LAN, and set up Exchange's SMTP server to accept connections only from the
IP of the server in the DMZ...and relay mail from that server to Exchange.

I'm against POP clients of any sort on servers, if you hadn't noticed. ;-)

its not a pop client of any sort ... im not a fan of pop either!

it turns the connection around into smtp which is what its using to
deliver the mail to exchange. for orgs that may be using pop connectors
on dynamic adsl lines for example this would give them proper mail
delivery that pop simply cannot do. have you ever seen someone trying to
get mail delivered properly from mailing lists and multiple BCC's using
pop connectors .... !

most organisations dont have the in house capability of setting up a
properly configured linux box.

Exchange can do ODMR, it's just authenticated TURN using a different
port (57 IIRC).
