Outlook 2003 not being updated when showing as connected
One notebook user on a SBS2000 network has been upgraded to outlook 2003.
All seemed well for a month and then mysteriously last week outlook messages
stopped being updated. In the bottom right of outlook it shows as
"Connected" but instead of showing the "All folders are up to date" message
the time the folder was last updated is displayed.
To get mail the user has to go offline and then do a manual send/receive.
Has anyone any idea what has happened and how I fix?
Thanks

Microsoft Shared Fax on SBS 2000 stops receiving faxes
We run microsoft shared fax on our SBS 2000 server. Every so often, a fax
will come in and the fax machine hangs on it. There is a folder on the
server, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Shared Fax\Queue, that shows a file in the queue but the size
is 0 kb. Every time this happens, if another fax comes in the fax service
on the server won't pick up the fax. If I try restart the service, it will
stop it but it won't restart it. Our only remedy is to reboot the server.

Sbsclnt.exe
Hi!
I've got a quick question about the sbsclnt.exe that by
default runs in the script of a client connected to an
SBS 2000.
Can it be removed from the script safely? I mean, if I
don't use the two shortcuts on the desktop (and don't
wan't them there) and if I don't need the SBS to install
apps on the clients, do I then need the sbsclnt.exe to
run each time a client logs on? Does anything bad happen
if I remove it or do I miss out on some functionality?
Thanx in advance.

Is there anyway I can do this without having to log in 20 times and type out

Recommendations for adding a 2nd SQL Server
I have an SBS 2000 network set up and running fine.
We use the included SQL Server for a small Intranet...
Scenario:
I need to add a 2nd server (win2k?) with an enterprise version of SQL
installed that a company wide software package will access. Only about 50%
of the users log into the SBS server... the other 50% simply sit on the LAN
(i.e. don't have internet access, e-mail, etc...) but will need to attach to
the 2nd SQL Server (using SQL rights... not the server's).
Does anyone have any input, cautions, recommendations?? I remember PDC and
BDC from NT... but what about w2k and SBS??... What happens with DHCP....
ANY input is greatly appreciated!!!

Size of exchange database sbs2003
Hey Guys
Just a stupid question
If i take a look at the total size of the user mail boxes under usage
reports in system management under is says approx 9 gb in size, however when
I look at the size of the edb and stm file they are nearly 16gb in size.
How can this be so, already we have had a problem with the database going
over 16gb and stopping exchange so we ran a defrag but it only reduced the
database by about 300mb.
Can someone advice me on what is going on

Using WS-FTP on a workstation....
Hello SBS'ers!
I've quickly searched the newsgroup, but I didn't get any results about
my next little "request", so here goes:
1) Running firewall client on all of the workstations (all workstations are
Win2K and patched).
2) Director wants to use the program WS-FTP to update her company website
from the office instead of waiting to get home.
3) Do I have to set up a packet filter for the specific port that WS-FTP
uses to allow the program to run off of her workstation?

Branch Office VPN Options
I have spent some considerable time over the past few
days searching for some tried-and-true recommendations
for connecting one of my customer's main office SBS2000
system to a branch office, and have come up
disappointingly short. I would appreciate any experience
and recommendations from the community.
Both main and branch offices have DSL Internet
connections, with the main office operating through a
standard SBS2000/ISA2000 system. The branch office PC's
currently connect to the SBS system via the built-in
WinXP PPTP VPN client.
They would like to join the two networks with a site-to-
site VPN, and take advantage of full client access (join
the domain) for Exchange email and ISA Server filtering.
This seems like a simple request, using any of the
currently available VPN routers (Linksys RV042 would be
the starting point). However, the documentation I've
reviewed indicates that it is essentially impossible to
connect the standard IPSec tunnel mode VPN of one of
these routers to the ISA Server. Is that true?
If this is such a major problem, what are other solutions
to the problem, short of the expense of installing a
second Windows server, possibly with ISA server, in the
branch office? Isn't there a better way for my small
business customer?
What about a router-to-router VPN connection that somehow
still leaves ISA in-place and functioning in the main
office?
Thanks for any help that you can provide,

Yes. MBSA does detect if the update for this vulnerability is required
for Office XP, Office 2003, Project 2002, Project 2003, Visio 2002, and
Visio 2003. However, MBSA does not currently support the detection of
several of the programs that are listed in the Affected Software and
Affected Components section of this security bulletin. For detailed
information about the programs that MBSA currently does not detect, see
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 306460. If you have installed any of
the programs that are listed in the Affected Software and Affected
Components section of this security bulletin you may have to manually
determine if you have to install the required update. For example, a
Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 system that has installed Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 will need to install the Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 security update and MBSA will not detect the missing
update in these configurations. Also, MBSA cannot use the Office

scan a system locally for required security updates. For more

[OHIOSBS] Any SBSers in Columbus Ohio or Dayton on this list?
Anyone interested in joining an online SBS User Group for central Ohio?
There are already SBS groups established in Cincinnati and Cleveland (see
the links below), but none in Columbus, Dayton or surrounding areas.
So if you are interested in Small Business Server and live roughly within
50-60 mile radius of Columbus or Dayton, shoot me an e-mail and we'll put
you on the list. Once we get a half a dozen names or so we'll launch a

E-mail timbarrett@rehabdesigns.com and make sure you include the word

Adding domain users as local admin
Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the right group but I will try anyway. I am setting

able to have local admin rights to their workstations.
Also, how does the licencing work? I have installed SBS2003 which comes with

usage is 1. What does this mean?

OWA is meaningles outside the office.
Hi everyone:
The location https:\\myserver\exchange\anyuser is meaningless outside the
office local network. Yes, I tested from home and it did not work. It
works if I get access via my office VPN connection from home. However, we
want it to work from any browser.
Also this has become important because I have discovered that Exchange
Server Web access is not working properly in the following way. If persons
in the office send email, it is immediately visible remotely using Exchange
Server Web access. However, if persons outside the office send me email, it
does not appear in the in-box through Exchange Server Web access at all,
until after I access my account using Outlook Express at home or Outlook at
the office. . How can I make exchange to see email sent from external
domains all together with people from our domain. We also use apollohosting
to host our email/website services. If I go to the web mail account in
apollohosting I only see the external emails, not the emails that are sent
withing our domain. How can I solve these 2 problems. Can someone help me
get to the bottom of these problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Mail server sending out unwanted email - not relaying

not relaying but its happening when the pop connector collects email,

all the msgs queing up to be sent. Presumably I've missed something
fairly obvious on the setup ... can anyone advise?

smtp services
Hi all
My fiiend's network has been operating for the past 2 years running sbs2k
but have recently run into a problem with certain email services. It seems
that since they went from a static to dynamic dsl that their ISP cannot
accept incoming email to other snet.net accounts. Their contention is that
we have to specify that we are using smtp.snet.yahoo.com My question is
this: We have smtp services (virtual) running on the machine. Do we add this
as a new service or are smtp connectors the answer? In KB 294736 and 265293
they refer to using smtp connectors but I don't know if that is the
appropriate path here. All other email works fine.. we simply cannot send to
anyone at snet.net
Also, in KB 274638, there is a reference that if the external IP address
changes, and the IP address for the smtp publishing rule has not been
updated could cause mail to be not delivered.
Any help is greatly apprieciated

Lockout policy
Hi,
I implemented a lockout policy where users would be locked out for 30
minutes if their password was entered incorectly 3 times. We had problems
with this and I ended up having to diable this policy. I also have a policy
where the users have to change their password every 4 weeks. But when they
do change their password, the system allows them to login but denies them
access to any network resource. And the next time they log in, the system
says the account is locked out.
Does anyone know of any reasons for this?

Application requirement
We have a client running an SBS2000 based network. They may upgrade to 2003
over the next 6 months or so, but this isn't the issue.
The client wants every email that goes out of the company to be logged with
some form of reference number and that a copy of all outgoing emails is held
on the server. They don't want to rely in going into "sent items" for the
particular user.
The reason for this is that a lot of agreements are being sent out and they
might need to refer to certain emails in the future in the event of legal
proceedings etc
Does anyone know of any software that does this?

XP SP2 - new way to stop USB key drives
Hi - not tried this, but looked handy

Controlling block storage devices on USB buses
What does controlling block storage devices on USB buses do?
This feature provides the ability to set a registry key that will prevent
write operations to USB block storage devices, such as memory sticks. When
this registry key is enabled, the devices function only as read-only
devices. You can implement this setting as part of a security strategy to
prevent users from transporting data using these devices.
Who does this feature apply to?

SBS 2003 - Manage Users
Hi,
I'm new to SBS 2003 and struggling with parts of it. I've
just lost most of the Manage Users functionality which
seems to be because the user templates have all
disappeared! I can't create manage users into groups and
I had to recover (last known good) after dodgy reboots but
it didn;t go back far enough to completely fix the problem.
Can anyone suggest a way to repair this?
Things started to go wrong when I tried to use NTFS
permissions to prevent unauthorized access to a web
subfolder. It worked, but when I tried to reset the
permissions nothing happened (except that problem A
suddenly appeared.)
Help and suggestions much appreciated!

Roaming Profiles
I am working for a client installing a new Windows Small
Business Server 2003, and I am having some difficulty.
My client has a Dell server, a Dell 16 port switch, and
four client PCs each running Windows XP, as well as a
Netgear ADSL modem/router/WAP device through which a
connection is made to the internet.
I have installed SBS on the server, and have started the
configuration process.
At the moment I am trying to get roaming profiles
working. I believe that I have installed and configured
everything correctly to this point.
I have created four users on the server, as well as the
four client PCs on the server. I have installed Windows
XP on one of the client PCs.
I have set the users up to have roaming profiles - on the
server, I have set a path for the profiles to use. I
believe that I have set the correct share and NTFS
permissions for the directory where profiles are to be
stored.
When I attempt to logon to the client PC as one of the
created users, I get two error messages relating to being
unable to access the roaming profile on the server, and
being unable to create a local profile on the client PC.
I am, however, able to complete the logon process and
can "see" the server from the client PC, whilst logged on
as the user.
When I change one of the users from being a roaming user
to having a local profile, the user is able to log on
correctly, with no errors, and the local profile is
created without any errors.
I am relatively new to administering Microsoft products
having come from a UNIX background, but I believe that I
understand the theory - it is the practice which is
causing me problems.
I have searched the internet for a solution to the
problem, I have purchased the Microsoft Press "Windows
Small Business Server 2003 Administrator's Companion"
book, and I have searched the Microsoft web-site, but I
cannot find the answer to my problem.
I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the
correct direction.

Keep file server running if SBS 2000 box down
I have tried this but when I switch of the SBS box things are not working.
Being doing it after hours so maybe a bit tired....lol
Flattened 2000 server (file server) and looking for some ideas before I
attempt again.
All workstations are XP. The idea is if there is a failure of SBS box,
granted email and internet are down but working files are put onto file
server so staff can continue to work.
On paper the concept is straight forward but as my experiances have shown I
am missing something. The biggest problem was getting validated on the
Domain if a pc was switched off and the SBS box was switched off. Being XP
they could logon to the pc but accessing the file server shares didn't work.
Anyone actually got the scenario set up ?

The following tips are designed to help you get the fastest
and most appropriate answer to your questions.
They suggest which newsgroup to use, what basic research to do
before posting, information to include in your posting, newsgroup
etiquette, and alternate sources of useful information.
Following them will help us to help you.
===================================================
- Post to the appropriate newsgroup:
For SBS 4/4.5: microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz
For SBS 2000 : microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000
For SBS 2003 : microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs
Microsoft News Server: news.microsoft.com
The SBS Newsgroups provide a free forum for threaded discussion
and peer support on issues related to Small Business Server by

===================================================
- Post with a meaningful subject line so those with expertise or
interest in the topic can find it quickly. - Posting with a purely
attention seeking topic such as "DISASTER" or "No-One Ever Responds
to Me" may get you noticed -once- but is likely to get you ignored
or dropped in future. Remember -everyone's- issue is important to
them, so que jumping won't enhance anyone's opinion of you within
the newsgroup.
Mentioning the SBS component, Exchange, ISA, SQL Server, RAS,
Pop Connector etc.in the heading will be a big help in catching the eye
of experts in that field.
===================================================
- If posting a Question, post with sufficient information for a complete
stranger to understand your SBS version, environment; your issue, what
you have tried and what failed. You're not cutting down on the typing
as you'll be asked anyway, and it can only enhance the speed to
diagnosis and resolution.
A secondary benefit to this is that in correctly framing the question,
the resolution often presents itself.
Note:
Stating your SBS version ( 4, 4.5, 2000, 2003 ) is particularly
important as is whether your SBS 2003 is Standard or Premium and whether
you have ISA installed.
Please state all messages and IDs in failure notices and/or in the event
viewers. Also what may have been installed/changed/updated prior to or
during the issue.
===================================================
- Posting In capitals on is considered SHOUTING! ...Please don't.
===================================================
- Don't overlook or discount Paid Support.
If the Issue is urgent or complex, the time you spend searching for a
"free" solution. ...and cost factors such as Worker Downtime, Customer
Irritation, Lost Productivity, and Hair Replacement costs will likely
far outweigh the cost of a Support Call to Microsoft PSS (Product
Support Services ) or a Support Professional.
Note: Hotfixes are free of charge. Just ask for the specific Hotfix.
===================================================
- It's difficult to convey human emotions on Usenet (Humour, Pathos,
Sarcasm, Tongue-In-Cheek ) so use of emoticons and/or acronym tags is
advised.
.... and no; you -don't- have to be serious all the time. It's a
community. Enjoy !
===================================================
- There are many paths to a solution and as many experiences in getting
there as there are posters. Sometimes the paths are well worn, tried and
true. Sometimes paths diverge, sometimes converge, and sometimes new
trails are blazed. Understand and respect that, and use what suits you
and your situation.
===================================================
- People are different, but people are people. You should be nice to
them.
This is a technical newsgroup and not a place for Egos or Flame Wars.
As a community we try to leave them at the door and respect each other.
What you post here is archived and available to anyone, anytime.

===================================================
- Don't be shy to post a Question ....or an Answer.
SBS encompasses a lot and has been known to make even corporate
SysAdmins Cringe and MCSEs cry. None of us knows -all- the answers.
We were all "Newbies" once and none of us has experience with every
permutation, combination, setup and environment SBS is deployed in,
so there are -no- stupid or dumb questions. That's the domain of
answers that imply that there are.
If you're asking a question and know the answer to another one on the
page, muck in and post it. The poster may get a faster resolution than
they would have, and an additional member may get a response
they wouldn't have otherwise
Your solution may be a something that we can all learn from.
- What goes around, comes around.-
===================================================
- It's not only Break/Fix. Anecdotes, Wishlists, Insights and Brickbats
are all grist to the mill of SBS Topics and all on-topic for the
community.
===================================================
- Don't Multi-post*. ( *the Same Posting within different newsgroups
or within the same thread.)
If you must post to several newsgroups, Cross-post to just the relevant
ones. A response in one will then show up in the others and all can
follow the thread.
===================================================
- Be patient.
Newsgroups are not Instant Messaging, and people aren't on-line just
waiting for you to post. If the situation -is- that urgent, then
Paid Support will pay for itself.
Remember: No-one -owes- you a response.
===================================================
- Things get missed.
Things do get lost or missed, or someone with the appropriate skills
or experience may not be available, so if you haven't had a response
after 3 Days or so, post again, perhaps with more detail and things
you've tried in the interim.
============================================
- Lastly, -enjoy - and remember, SBS Rocks !

install printer on 98 os based workstation
Today I want to add a network printer to a 98 os workstaion in SBS 2000
domain. The printer i choose to connect to is a device to another workstation
running 2000 pro who worked as a printer server in SBS 2000 domain. I did the
same thing for a 2000 pro workstation, it was done smoothly, but when i try
to do this for a 98 os workstation, it prompted me insert a 98 2nd os CD. I
do not have the 98 os CD at hand. I guess the problem is that 98 os need a
appropriate printer driver. Can anyone help. Thanks Tag: email Tag: 164367

Hi Guys
One of our bosses works from home and wants to be able to check his emails,

there was any thing else but as yet can't find anything.
Wondering if anyone here can give me some tips please :)
Any help would be appreciated.
In outlook express are the following entries correct.
Pop3 server = mail.ourdomain.com or should we use the external ip of our

Device/Firewall for SOHO in AD 2003 Env
Background:
We have three servers with its own web contents available on the Internet.
Our servers are not behing ANY firewall and would liekt o place behind
firewall (I only want to expose the necessary services to the outside
world - nothing more). Each server is Windows 2003 Std. and one is a DC.
(1) I have three servers internally that has its own public IP.
(2) I want a firewall device to block everything except the web sites
(other services) I have on each one. I want o publish any service (FTP,
RDP, etc) and punch a hole in the firewall device and port forwad to correct
internal IP.
Question:
=======
What device for the SOHO (cheap), that will allow me to forward traffic from
each PUBLIC IP (only 3 servers to forward to) to the correct Internal
Server? Basically, I want a device that will function a simple firewall,
and also port forwards traffic of public IP to the appropriate internal IP /
server.
Hope this makes sense...please let me know what you think - thanks. Tag: email Tag: 164357
