had a sector go bad on my HD and the edb.log was effected and now i cant boot up the machine normally. It gives me an error saying its rebuilding the active directory and then i get a pop up window telling me

security accounts manager initialization failed. directory services cant start. error status: 0x00002c

i can boot into the AD recovery mode but i'd like to get things working normally. I never scheduled any backups of the edb.log or any of the other files in there

There was a file called edb0001.log. i tried replacing the broken edb.log with it but it didnt help

Is there anything i can do to correct this? Oh and this is on a SBS2003 machine. Couldnt find a 2003 group though

thanks

Ia

P.S. remove the --xx-- garbage from my email address if emailing me, thanks

looks like a restore from tape. You can try using ntdsutil and cleanup
metadata in AD to see if that helps. You can restore AD and not worry about
files.

you don't "run" ntdsutil....it is command line....go through there and
you'll see cleanup metadata of AD.

I meant i ran ntdsutil from the cmd prompt. Anyhow, i looked at metadata cleanup, but i dont see anything in there that looks like it would help. It first wants me to connect to a domain or server and i cant do that since the AD service isnt starting up on this machine

can i just wipe out the AD domain/database and start fresh? there really isnt anything in there that i think i need. Theres just the admin login, my personal user login and 2-3 other logins used by other apps. I can recreate those if i have to.

Yup, it should be. On msnews.microsoft.com you should be able to find it.
