I'm running SBS2K but did not install the Exchange server
as I had planned to use an alternate mail server (IMail).
My IMail setup is working perfectly except [Microsoft
ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.5329] is answering
on port 25 and denying incoming mail. I didn't install
Exchange - is there any way to disable it completely?! I
can't find anything listed in services to show it's
actually running. Any ideas?

Um ... as I said, "I can't find anything listed in
services to show it's actually running." There are no
services listed that say anything about Exchange.

Have you tried to stop the smtp service?

I did stop and disable the SMTP service (didn't see it!)
and now exchange isn't answering on port 25.
Unfortunately nothing else is answering either - IMail's
SMTP service is running but I think this may be an issue
for Ipswitch's support/newsgroups now. Unless anyone here
has any other suggestions!

Thanks.

I'd be curious to know why you would dump an excellent product like Exchange
which you already paid for and pretty simple to configure in SBS and
purchase another email server.

Hi Ansley,

No, you can have an unlimited number of email addresses and accounts. The 50
limit is a user count limit, only 50 users can be connected at any one given
time [assuming you have that many licenses]. But each user could have 100
email addresses, if you want.

For example, you can have 100 users, and 100 mailboxes, and 500 email
addresses. If you have 50 CALs, then 50 of those users could connect at the
same time.

Exchange on SBS is really a no-brainer. When you add a user, the email
address, mailbox etc. is all configured automatically when you run the
wizard. You are making things hard for yourself by not using Exchange.

Are you using the ISA with SBS? You might have to tell ISA to forward the
port to the other mail server. Or if you are using a hardware firewall,
might have to make the modification there.

Really? Wow - that's not what I understood from some other
sources. None of the users actually need to connect
directly to the server - they just need to connect to
Exchange's web mail system.

I've seen how it automates the creation of mailboxes for
actual users but was told that the limit was 50 users
total - not 50 users connected at one time. How would you
add additional mailboxes if they weren't for actual system
users? Or does it allow you to add more users that you
have licenses for and then just check to make sure no more
than X are logged in at once?
