I deleted some users out of the active directory, now the backup (veritas)
reports it can't connect ot their mailboxes (big suprise.) do I just purge
the mailboxes to delete them permanently? or have I done it wrong?

Cheers

Veritas does that for 30 days, unless you uncheck their mailboxes from the
backup job.

If you no longer need the user's e-mail account, you must
purge the account, use the Exchange to do this. Otherwise
you backup's will fail for the reason you have mentioned.
