I am attempting to migrate sbs 2000 onto a new server and
have how to's in hand, however when I try and promote my
new server running Win2k server to a dc within the local
domain, dcpromo wizard walks me through its steps and then
quits with the following error:

"The operation failed because: Failed to modify the
necessary properties for the machine account CTSSERVER02$
Access is Denied"

What possible security settings are keeping me from
completing the promotion?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Norman,

Are you using the Windows 2000 from the SBS 2000 cd? If so, SBS 2000 does
not allow you to dcpromo into an existing domain.. you would need to use a
full retail version of Windows 2000 cd in order to install/dcpromo into an
existing domain..

Hope that helps,

I originally loaded SBS 2000 on the new server only to
find that the migration was going to be somewhat
complicated, so I reloaded Win 2k server from a full
version disk. Mightent some residual have been left on
the new server from the original sbs load?

Thanks

Found it!!!! Knowledge Base article Q232070 addresses my
exact problem. My administrator did not have delegation
authority. Now he does, and I am happily listening to the
new server promoting... whirr...click...whirr...click
Thanks all for the great forum.
