Dns disabled
I'm running DNS on my 2000 SBS. About once every two
weeks the dns, which is set to automatic, disables its
self which freezes our internet and our e-mail. Any
suggestions about some hidden registry entry or anything
that may be causing the dns to disable itself? Any help
would be greatly appreciated!!

Windows 2003 Server in an SBS2000 Domain
Hi,
I have just set up a test server with SBS2000 installed. I have left out the
ISA server. DNS is setup and working and have connected a Windows XP client
with no problems. The problem has arisen trying to connect a windows 2003
server to the network.
IP address of SBS server 10.0.0.2
Subnet mask 255.0.0.0
Gateway 10.0.0.2
DNS 10.0.0.2
WINS 10.0.0.2
Domain name opera
IP address of Win 2003 server 10.0.0.4
Subnet mask 255.0.0.0
Gateway 10.0.0.2
DNS 10.0.0.2
WINS 10.0.0.2
I can ping the SBS2000 server both by name and ip address from the win 2003
server and i can ping the 2003 server both by name and ip adress from the
SBS Server.
I have 3 problems:-
1). I could not get the win 2003 server to join the domain opera. I the end
i got it to join by putting the domain name as opera.local
2). When I browse the network and double clickon the doamin opera i get an
error message saying that i do not have sufficient rights please contact my
system administrator. ( I am logged on to the domain on the win 2003 server
as an administrator and am using the domain admins password.
3). Users can not log on to the Windows 2003 T/s (Administrators can)
neither can power users, and i have added Backoffice/remote users to the T/S
config.
Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Installed ISA and can not access IIS
I have installed ISA which I have never worked with before. I checked the
boxes saying that I would be use IIS, FTP etc on the box. I can access both
IIS and FTP from my internal network. However they are not accessable from

the heck to I check this? Also where do I go to open/close ports on the
firewall?

Continious Dial-Up and Network Traffic
I am guessing that my problem lies with ISA.
I am having a problem with the network traffic on the server side which seem
to bottleneck when connected to the internet.
From what I can understand the problem lies with the setting on ISA that
when a client make a request to the local network, the request is sent to
the internal and external server.
The solution apparently is to set ISA to use only internal DNS. The internal
DNS must therefore be configured as a client ISA server. This server must
then be configured to fwd any unresolved name to an external DNS.
This sound like my problem - I am just battling to find out exactly where
and how to configure these settings.
If there are other areas I should look at please advise.
It would also help if I knew hwere to look to find out why the dial-up is
takin place - I must admit I am guessing that this is the cause.

Exchange server stopped?
We are running SBS 2000. We had a problem with our
domain name coming off DNS servers. The source of the
problem has been corrected (apparently), but my Exchange
Server monitor shows the default server in a critical
condition of "STOPPED", with all the underlying services
running. Our internal mail system seems to be operating
properly, but external mail sent is bouncing back and we
don't seem to be getting any inbound stuff. Does the
STOPPED condition indicate needed attention here or will
it straighten out when the DNS issue is completely
resolved? If it needs attention, what should be done?
Thanks for any help.

I would like to know what sets my modem dialing. I have
set tasks for it to do such as updating antivirus software
but how can i tell for sure? Event Viewer does not always
tell me what is going on and shared modem properties does
not tell me either.
Also, what makes my modem stop ie. what triggers it to

Also, i have noticed a note that comes up on the screen
that says that this modem is on hold after it has dialed
out. Is this OK?
It is an internal modem (ess).

NT Server to SBS Server 2000
Our customer is running a network of 2PCs and one NT 4

OS Install problem - missing file on SP4?
Greetings,
I'm trying to install SBS 2000 on a Proliant server. Its get through the
initial gui part of the install and reboots the machine. On reboot it
idsplays a windows that prompts "Please install CD with NT5INF.CAT from
Service Pack 4CD'. There's a line where you can enter the path manually but
there's no browse.
I've tried all the service pack CD's that came with the set, as well as the
one's that came with my personal SBSA media. I went to the Microsoft website
and downloaded SP4 and extracted it manually to a directory, and the file
doesn't exist. Any suggestions?
If you cancel the window it reboots the server and you get the same message.
So it's loop.

Three site installation
I have a three site organisation with approx 40 users in total. Each

Facilities required are email, shared diaries, web proxy and file

Should I implement SBS2000 at one site and W2K servers as additional
domain controllers or should I implement W2K at each site with one
hosting exchange server. Additional servers would require ISA server
in both cases.
Is there anything to be gained going down the all W2K route other than
future expandability and greater expense? Are there any issues with
SBS2000 in a multi-site environment?

ISA and PCs on the LAN
We used to have our SBS2000 setup so that any PC on our network could get
DHCP, and using IE's LAN / automatic settings browse the internet.
Now however, we must manually enter the proxy address, and use usernames /
passwords to get out.
This is annoying. (may have started since SBS SP1, dunno)
What rules are needed to allow any PC assigned a DHCP address to be able to
browse without ISA blocking?

Domain Authentication via Wireless Access Point
My customer has a dual-homed server running Windows Small
Business Server 2000 with one NIC connected to the LAN
and the other connected to the Internet via a hardware
firewall. ISA Server 2000 is also used with some IP
filters for Blaster, etc.
This customer wants to access his domain user account on
his laptop via a wireless access point - until now, he
has been using a wired connection into his old laptop's
nic.
Wiring the wireless access point into the Ethernet
switch, assigning it a LAN IP address and using MAC
address to control acces works with getting the laptop to
work to the WAP but domain authentication is not working -
he cannot access his user and company shared folder, etc.
Reading the various white papers, etc., I think that the
WAP needs to be wired to the hardware firewall and be
given an IP address in the subnet used by the internal
connection of the hardware firewall and the external
connection of the server - effectively, the DMZ. We
would need Certificate services running on the server
along with RRAS, etc. so that the user authenticates with
the server via Remote Access.
Is this correct?
Or is it possible to configure the WAP on the LAN and
obtain domain authentication on this internal subnet? If
so, how can this be achieved, please?
Thanks in anticipation.

Patching
I would like to know how how people here handle this patching
madness. I work in a company of three full-time and two part-time employees.
One of our full-time employees is the owner, who has many non-technical
responsibilities although he has a technical background. One of the
part-time employees is an administrative assistant with no technical
background. The other part-time employee works two or three mornings a week.
My full-time colleague is still getting up to speed on servers but also
takes care of lots of the easier calls. This pretty much leaves me largely
or wholly responsible for about 40 servers, including about 20 SBS units. I
have VPN access to most of them but I've been reluctant to patch remotely,
if only on account of having heard that some error messages don't display on
the Terminal Services session. Plus, our clients are widely scattered
geographically, so if something blows up it may not be easy for me to make
an emergency on-site visit. In addition to server maintenance I also have to
do routine service calls such as "I can't print" or "My UPS is beeping."
It's hard to ignore the things that people demand that you fix right away
while doing work that nobody asked you to do (we did have one smart guy who
asked us for the Blaster patch though). We got stretched to the limit by the
blackout in the Northeast; lots of stuff got fried or otherwise
discombobulated. I really wanted to patch for Blaster but had no way to do
it unless I did it remotely, and even then I'd have to go home and do it
after hours. I think I may have patched about 10 or 15 of the 40, tops.
Yesterday I made it to a server but it already had W32.Welchia on it. So
what's a bedraggled technician to do? Am I just one of many or am I going
about it wrong? Tag: clients dropped from network Tag: 129277

XP Pro Clients - what User 'role'?
The Msft KB article does not make this clear (and there seems to be some

What role do you have to give Domain Users on the XP Pro clients, if any?
i.e. Power User, Restricted user (and is this as Domain users, or as Local

And finally... if as Domain users, can you just add them to a Group and put
that Group in the Client list

exact same problem and have corresponded with Trend but
was never able to get it resolved. I have since obtained

automatically. I did not need to do a manual update.
One question though, while my w/s updated automatically,
when I opened the Trend Server Protect Management Console,
I noticed that the server was still at pattern 628 (the
last pattern file). It downloaded pattern 630 (the
newest) and deployed it to all the w/s but the server is
still at 628. I could hit the "deploy now" button & it
would update to 630. Is there a separate hotfix for
this. Or is it something I'm missing? I'm running the

Anyone know the answer to this?

Disabling a user's internet access
The manager of my client's medical company asked me to
disable internet access for one user.
A while back, the doctors had an issue viewing X-rays

solution was to apply the ISA allow rule to any request.
Not exactly ideal security, but it was the only way to

Is there any other way to disable a user's internet
