Our exchange server is collecting mail from the ISP but
not routing it to recipients within the organisaton every
time I run the ICW if fails configuring exchange with the
following message

"The internet connection wizard was interuppted because of
an error or user intervention. Details have been recorded
in the file "icwlog.txt", which can be found in c:\program
files\microsoft Back Office\support directory.

Would you like to cancel ect"

the log file contains the following info
Error 0x80070420 returned from call to _RestartService().
Error 0x80070420 returned from call to EnablePOP3().
calling _SetRegInt4Value (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\BackOffice\Connectivity\ICW,
Last_MailOption_Exchange, 1).
Ignoring return value from call to _SetRegInt4Value().
calling _SetRegInt4Value (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\BackOffice\Connectivity\ICW,
Last_MailOption_POP3, 1).
Ignoring return value from call to _SetRegInt4Value().
Error 0x80070420 returned from call to CEMailCommit::Commit
().

I have only shown the section containing the 3 errors

KB 287172article refers to the errors is this the correct

Thanks Geoff

Contact your ISP to get to know if they support SMTP and ask for settings.
Than configure ICW to use SMTP in stead of POP3.

Hi Geoff,

I think your pop3 connector is in an uncontrollable state and won't stop or
start. You can confirm this by going into the services node and attempting
to stop/start it.

You can try a couple of things.

a) set the service to manual, then restart the server and try the ICW again.
If that doesn't work:
b) re-install the pop3 connector.

1. make a note of all the user mailbox settings you have in the connector.
2. delete (or move) the contents of c:\Program Files\Microsoft
BackOffice\Connectivity\POP3 Connector
- sometimes, the files won't delete because vmimb.exe is in use, and can't
be ended even in taskmgr. But moving it works.
3. run SBS setup from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, and set the pop3
connector to 'reinstall' or 'install'.
4. run ICW
5. re-enter you user specific data in pop3 connector.

Apply SBSsp1 or 1a.

After you get this going again, you can investigate SMTP as Marina
suggested. That will take a few days, so you'll probably want to get the
pop3 connector going again for at least the short term.

Hi Les

I really thought id beaten it with your help les!! however
after doing as you sugested ie reinstall pop3 connector
the icw ran ok however the mail was still not being routed
as before (mail was being down loaded from the ISP) I ran
the ICW again and it failed in the same manner as
previously. I went through the reinstall again with the
same results worked once then failed again. Do you think
the problem is more serious than just the pop3 connector?
The pop3 connector now seems to stop and start ok

Appendum!!

The pop3 connector service was showing as started so i
attemted to stop it but only start was available. so the
prob must be the pop3 as you summised. what is the setup
procedure for using smtp? is the routing problem because
of the pop3 problem?

Geoiff,

I just did the very same thing. Ask your ISP (or web hosting company,
if you are going that route) to change the MX record to your fixed
i.p.

My hosting company got that accomplished in a phone conversation and
12 hours later e-mail for our domain started hitting our exchange
server. Beats the POP3 connector any day !

Greg,

Do you have SBS SP1 applied ? If not, please do so because we don't want to
be fiddling with a problem that is fixed in SBSsp1 :-(.

Step through this article: it has a decent checklist.

The POP3 Connector May Stop Delivering Mail
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324236

Regarding the migration from POP3 to SMTP, a very good source of information
is found in the SBS on-line help.

Start | Programs | Small Business Server | Online Help
Click on the Search Tab, and enter Migrating from POP3 to SMTP E-mail.
Once the topic is found, click on it.
