Hi, all,

Please allow me to ask a very basic question. I am wondering how long is the
average life of a server machine which is running 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. I did some research on the web, it seem no one provided such a
statistics yet. Thanks.

I've never had one actually die, but I've noticed that after 4 years, odd
stuff begins to happen. I replace servers every five years.

I have one customer that runs a server already for 10 years :-) It still
runs and the customer does not want to upgrade because he thinks it does
what it supposed to do.

Oh well...

yeah, I think most people would say 3-5yrs. Funnily I'd not say because
things start going wrong but more due to the march of progress.

Where will we be in 3yrs? Heck, that's SBS Longhorn timeframe. I don't think
the old VP6 board I use for the LoungeAN SBS will cut that mustard, she's
been retired from a more demanding role (running a company) but never
hiccuped on me.

Thank you very much for the responses, Gary, SuperGumby and Mariette. Now I
got some ideas when I probably should consider replacing the server machne.
This is actually important because sooner or later we have to replace the old
server machine.

I had a Micron machine that ran as a server for almost 8 years. First it
used NT 3.51, then NT 4.0 and finally it was upgraded to Windows 2000 SBS.
It was later turned into a workstatin and is still working just fine.
