hi. new to ng. i have 2 sbs, plus a few win2k servers. the automatic update
works just fine on the win2k servers (applying security packages, IIS
Security RollUp Package, etc.) but does not work correctly on either of my
two sbs machines. whenever i do the auto-update, there is an error message
in the event viewer - system log - source: automatic updates. it lists the
updates that do not install correctly. for example, "Installation Failure.
Windows failed to install the following update: Q327696 Internet Information
Services Security RollUp Package." the same udpates work fine on the
standard win2k servers.

any ideas?

Hi Eric,

Thank you for using Microsoft Technical Support Newsgroups.

Check out the information in the following article:

324872 You Cannot Apply Some Windows Update Packages to an Exchange 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=324872

Just stop the Exchange Information Store before applying the updates and all
should be well.

Once again, thank you for using the newsgroups.

Best Regards,

Automatic updates? NO WAY! Try using SUS. From there you can approve or
disapprove updates before deploying them to the system. Best example: HAVE A
TEST BOX IN YOUR SHOP OR AT HOME TO DEPLOY UPDATES ON. DO NOT UPDATE A
PROUCTION SERVER WITHOUT TESTING.

I personally never use Windows auto-update on a server. But if you must,
stop Exchange and other 3rd party services before updating.
