Hi all,

I've got SBS 2000 at several sites, and at every site, the POP3
connector that comes with Exchange doesn't work. Every time the
connector goes to d/l mail, it stops. I've set the recovery to recover
constantly, which keeps it up most of the time, but mail seems to be
going missing, which I assume is from the srevice shutting down while
mail is half dealt with. I've got around this problem at a few sites
by using CHimera's EFS (A fantastic little program), but this only
works for global POP3 accounts, and this client, has individual
accounts (and this can't be changed, for various reasons). Can anyone
suggest (freeware or not) a POP3 connector which I can use for
individual POP mail boxes, which I can then use to pass the mail to
Exchange?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
DSt.

Do you do anything to the SMTP Virtual Server settings in Exchange? Do
you go through all the items on the To Do List when setting up an SBS
box?

I ask because although the POP3 connector is not the best in the world,
it does normally work in most cases.

If you do wish to use a 3rd-party one, POPBeamer is generally regarded
as being one of the best.

Ditto on Steve comments.

Just one more thing-
What errors are you seeing for the POP3 connector. You should enable maximum
logging for troubleshooting purposes. Maybe you are missing something simple
as running ICW and allowing POP3 outbound.

I don't do anything...in fact, I don't run the ICW, because our
clients use hardware firewalls, so all of the ISA services are
disabled (we don't need any of the ISa functionality). This has
happened on sites even where this hasn't been the case though, when
I've ran through the ICW and checked everything as it should be.
Broadband connectiions are done through routers/firewalls, with the
server having one NIC. I set up IP, SM, and gateway to point to the
firewall. I leave the DNS settings blank, and allow it to put in it's
127.0.0.1 address, and set up DNS forwarders to point to the ISP's DNS
servers.

Does this allow checking of multiple POP accounts?

I've tried this (logging). The sequence basically goes (in order of
event vwr messages):
- checking the pop3 account/s
- the pop3 service is shutting down

And that's it, other than various "flushing inbound/outbound
connection" messages, and "the service has stopped successfully"
messages.

TIA,
DSt.

You still need to run the ICW and go through the items on the To Do
List to get your SBS properly configured.

We have used POP2Exchange I believe it is called at 1 site and this far no
reported problems. Been in place about 3 months.

Yes... a clear example of why using the wizards in SBS is so important. :-)

Yes... PopBeamer allows everything that the POP Connnector does and more.

The two useful things I find that POPBeamer does are that it allows
the messages to remain on the POP3 server (which lets a client retrieve them
from outside the office-- lots safer than Outlook Web Access) and that it
allows a shorter interval than the 15 minutes allowed by the POP3 Connector.

That said, I suspect that if the built-in POP3 Connector does not
work, some issue with the SBS needs to be resolved. Probably running the SBS
ICW is what's needed. Otherwise I doubt that another POP3 client will help.
