Hi

One of my customer is using VPN remote access, it works pretty well. An
additional remote user needs to access the server & use TS to run an
application. The application software writer has set up a new remote user,
but by using active directoty, not the SBS user wizard. (Despite my
instructions to always use the wizards). It seems that after about a week,
this user is losing their TS desktop settings & it has to be set up again.
Is this normal? Also it appears that TS will only handle 2 users at once. Is
this correct?

Regards
Nick

I don't know about loosing the desktop settings (you are using the same
user/profile?)... but the SBS box is normally running on Remote Admin mode
which only allows 2 remote connections. I would not allow normal users to
access the SBS server via TS, get a 2nd server or an XP box.

Thanks for your reply, Javier.

This is 2 separate users & logons. I'm not sure how to setup a system with a
2nd server or XP workstation, go can I do this with TS somehow? Can I put it
in a different mode to allow more users?

Nick

Nick, the Term Server environment that comes built into SBS is really there
for remote administrative use only, even though when you install SBS2000 you
are given an option whether to install TS in remote admin or application
mode.

In SBS2003 server, this option has been comppletely removed.

What Javier is recommending is that if you have a true need to allow users
to remotely connect via a Term Server setup, that you get a second computer,
install it with Windows Server 2000 (or 2003) and enable TS on it.
Microsoft has documents on line for setting up a second computer in this
manner.

The reason you don't want regular users to TS into your SBS server is
because you are putting your entire server at risk. Hopefully, you do not
allow any user to physically walk up to the SBS server and sit down and log
in and run apps. Well, that's what you are doing when you allow users to
come in via TS and connect directly to the SBS server - and that's why we
say set up a second server for that purpose!

To allow more than 2 connections you would have to change to Application
Sharing Mode (which is only possible on SBS2k, not 2k3). However, this is an
extremely bad idea both from a security and performace standpoint... and you
could also break the apps on the SBS box. I strongly recommend against doing
this (specially since you don't seem to be familiar with TS, if you don't
mind me saying so).

Using a 2nd server for TS you would need to install Win2k/2k3 on the other
server, join it to the domain and install TS on App Mode (there is a
whitepaper on this that explains it step by step). A WinXP box will only be
able to open 1 TS session (Remote Destkop), but it would be inexpensive
comparred with TS.

Thansk for your advice Javier & for the further explanation. You are correct
that I don't really understand TS too well!

Any links to the White paper on installing TS would be gratefully received!

Go to www.microsoft.com/technet to search for TS articles. If you are
really interested in how and why this Brian Madden book is great.
