OWA rejecting all client logins
Installed SBS-2K and was instantly able to access OWA from
a client machine within the LAN. Since then I have made
numerous configs to the server.
Now! OWA restricts login from any client machine inside or
outside the LAN. (URL: http://ip-ddress/exchange/user)
Upon entering the correct address as above OWA should open
without prompting for login credentials. I not only get
prompted, but several more times before the screen locks?
Post or not! Please alert me by email with your thoughts. Tag: use above e-mail adr. for submitted question - tks. Tag: 118033
Trend CSMS (The new one) Installation
First install of this. Nothing sensible in Google.
I've got ScanMail (largely the same), and OfficeScan (shared folder
installation can confuse) to work, but I can't seem to get the right info in
the right boxes to load ServerProtect.
This multiple server stuff is confusing, when you only have a single SBS

How do I name the "Domains", and what do I put where?
The "old" one was much easier!!

All Critical & Security Updates for Windows 200 and Windows 98

each terminal machine from the server as needed? Since

Which do you all recommend....TZO or Static IP thru Verizon DSL???
Hi All,
First off, thank you all so much for the advice and insight you've all
given me. Verry helpful! I hope I can return the advice as I get
more knowledgeable with SBS2K.
My current question is in regards to the DSL connection I have for my
proposed SBS2K setup. I currently have an aDSL connection thru
Verizon at $59.00 a month. If I upgrade to a static IP address (for
use with SBS2K/Exchange)...Verizon will charge me $89.00 a month (an
additional $30.00 a month). That's pretty expensive for my small
business, so I am looking at alternatives.
I've read a little bit about TZO. It seems cheaper...but is it stable
and better than getting my own static ip address? Or are there
serious shortcomings? What TZO package do you all recommend??? FYI,
this will be for a lan of 11 pc's running Win XP on SBS2K. I already
have a website for my company hosted by hostdepot.com...so will that
interfere with my company email address if I switch to TZO or a static
ip?
Kindly help!!!

OWA access from internet
I have setup SBS 2000 with Exchange and ISA Server. I have two NIC's, one
with a public IP and the other with a private IP. Everything seems to be
functioning as it should. Everything works and we can access OWA from our
network.
My question is what would be the best way to configure the system to allow
OWA from the internet?
The default configuration by the wizard in ISS for the Default Web Site is
using the private IP, so that I understand why we can't access fro mthe
internet. I have already tried changing the IP setting in IIS for the
Default Web to All Unassigned (just for testing), but the system didn't like
that.

E-mail program not connecting to ISA
I have about 20 win98 clients connected to my SBS 2000 (I
know win 98 doesn't play well...) We are accessing POP3
accounts from an outside ISP. Outlook will sometimes
connect and other times, it will say the connection has
been terminated. Usually when it gets terminated the ISA
system tray icon has a red "!" in it.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Am I missing a
protocol somewhere? It just happens at seemingly random
times, and it happens on some machines and not others.
Everyone still has internet access though...?

Deny "delete" permission on company folder
I have a costumer with SBS2000 network with Win98 and Win2000 clients.
He want to deny files and folders delete permission inside the "company"

He wants to do it only on cliente computers for normal users only (not
administrators).
I am not sure about with permssion I have to remove and if I should simply

Another problem is that Word and Excel write temp files in the same folder
of the original files, and when you close the program, it will not be able

Installing 2nd SBS2000 server
I currently have one server running Windows 2000 and
SBS2000. For the sake of this message I'll call the domain
mycompany.com. Someone else set up this server, who is
nolonger here, but said that because we already have a
website called mycompany.com we could not see
mycompany.com in our network so He said he tricked the ISA
software to use mc (short for my company) as the displayed
domain. The machine name is sbs2000.
At any rate, I am tring to install another server in the
domain to run as a backup. Actually I am upgrading NT 4.0
& SBS 4.5 TO SBS 2000 onto a NEW server.
The instuctions tell me to install W2k on the new server
but keep as a Workgroup. The machine name is sbs2000-2.
Did that.
Now when I install SBS2K on the screen that asks for
the "Full DNS name for new domain" I put in mycompany.com
and the system says it has detected a duplicate DNS domain
name on the network.
How do I name this to come up and be a member of my
current domain to run as a backup?

RRAS and modem set-up
Ok, I've posted about an error I'm receiving twice, and
haven't had any help there. So, I'm changing tactics.
I'm trying to set up a modem as a backup RAS connection

answer. I'm also running IAS on this server. I've read

way around it? I have installed SUS onto the server, but I cant

way to change it to install from the server instead? Also would it be

Firewall settings - reply
Hi Chad
I am following up on the reply to my question on the
Newsgroup (see below). I am trying to set up an EDI system
from my LAN. It requires access to the remote server over
ports 21, 989, 990, and 3662. I have created protocol
rules for each of these ports (both inbound and outbound)
but my software fails at the point of the handshake,
implying that the ports are not accessible in some way.I
have set them up as TCP ports and specified the port
numbers inbound and outbound (separate protocols under one
protocol rule). I am trying to access the remote server
from one of my workstations.
I think everything is set up correctly. Can you think of
anything I may have missed or overlooked?
Yours
John Wilson
Hi John -
First question is what machine(s) need access on these
ports? If client
machines, you need to create a protocol rule (& and
protocol definitions),
if the server is the only machine that needs these ports,
then you are
correct that you need packet filters.
For your packet filters, I'm guessing you have both your
local and remote
ports set to a fixed port. It's been my experience that
this does not work
well, if at all. The side of the connection that is
accepting inbound
connections should be set to the fixed port number, with
the client side
being set to either All Ports or Dynamic. For example, if
you are
initiating a connection with a server on the internet (so
that the remote
server is accepting the incoming connection), then the
remote port will be
set to fixed and the local port will be set to either All
Ports or Dynamic.
If your server is accepting inbound connections from
others, then the local
port will be set to fixed and the remote port set to
either All Ports or
Dynamic. Also - unless you are accepting inbound
connections from other
machines on the internet, I would set the packet filters
to be for outbound
access only.
If the clients need access, you'll need to expand Policy
Elements and create
a new protocol definition for each port you need open. If
you're using the
default BackOffice Internet Access protocol rule, then the
clients should
have access after creating these definitions. If you've
locked down your
outbound access, then you'll need to create a new protocol
rule to allow the
new protocol definitions you just created.

Magic Disk not working on several XP Pro SP1 PCs. Why?
Hello,
A question. On a new SBS install, I installed the client diskette to add
some XP PRO SP1 laptops to my network but when I click on the diskette and
click setup, the PC freezes at "Installing Windows 2000 Networking" and I
have to end the task. I am getting this mostly on new installs. And once
when it did finally install, I could not surf the internet. I checked my
settings and the domain information looked right. I manually installed the
firewall client. My proxy looked right in the IE settings. Only with XP Pro
boxes, others seem ok. Even Win98 boxes install ok. I posted a question
before, I had the browser service set to auto. Could this of done it? No
errors on the server side. no viruses. Am running Symantec's Corporate

SBS2000 and "computer browser" service question
Hello,
I am a bit confused. I read that all XP PRO and Win2K PCS on a network with
an SBS2000 server should have the "Computer Browser" service set to Manual
and it should not be on, otherwise you get a "forced election" error. Even
though the Computer Browser defaults to Automatic on a clean install. I keep
getting the broswer errors in my event log and it is maddening. If I turn
off the browser service, I can't see other PCs in the network. If I set to
"NO" on maintainserverlist, it is even worse. I have maintainserverlist set
to "auto." What do you think?

Cisco Offers Patch for Network Software Flaw
Companies that operate key Internet backbones scrambled
to patch a serious software flaw in equipment that relays
much of the global network's traffic. The vulnerability,
in Cisco Systems Inc. routers and other switches, could
be used by hackers to cause outages. The problem has not
been exploited, according to Cisco, which released a free
patch to fix the flaw in its Internetworking Operating
System.

MUSIC BIZ SUBPOENAS 150 USERS
The music industry has demanded that Verizon

Peer-to-peer users who swap copyrighted files could

Global Catalog Failed
Have SBS 2000 server (SP4) with no backup domain controller.
DCDiag shows the following error in FMSOCheck:
Warning: DcGetDcName(GC_SERVER_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355
A Global Catalog Server could not be located - All GC's are down.
Warning: DcGetDcName(TIME_SERVER) call failed, error 1355
A Time Server could not be located.
The server holding the PDC role is down.
I have no Netlogon share any more and clients can no longer log on.
Everything on the server seems to be working fine apart from this.
Clients can access their Exchange mailboxes with no problems.
I have tried a System State restore to no avail.
Active Directory & Sites clearly shows NTDS as a Global Catalog server.
Any ideas on how I can fix this ?
Would an in-place upgrade help?
Can you even successfully do an in-place upgrade of SBS 2000?

Internet Access Restriction - Certain Sites Only
Hi
Does anyone know if ISA will allow restrictions on internet use to a certain
list of sites only. If so, how?
Otherwise, is there another software package that can safely run on an SBS
server to restrict internet use. We want to limit most users to a certain
list of business related sites, say around 150 sites, but also let some
users have full access.
Any idea's?

POP3
Hey there
I have just taken over a site who has SBS2000. While I was doing some
server maintenance I decided to run a port scan and found 4 ports open, one
of the was POP3. I closed them all down which was fine. I then found out
that the customer, when he is off-site downloads his email using pop3
directly off their SBS server via the internet. I know is is possible but I
have never seen it done before. Would you guys/gals class this as risky
having the POP3 port open to the world??

Active Direcotry woes
Hi all,
I am at a loss here and hoping that someone can clue me
in.
Senario
We have a SBS200 (SP4) installed as a domain controller
running exchange. Upon install everything worked well,
we could add computers and users w/o any problems.
Recently, I tried adding a new machine to the domain and
started getting dns errors relating to not being able to
contact the domain controller. The dns erros are
relating to not finding dns entries. forexaple when
using the "Network ID" method from My Computer ->
Properties -> Computer Name. If I say the domain name is
XYZ I get the dns error of not finding the name. But if
I use XYZ.COM it says it resolved the FDQN of the domain
contorller but does not connect to it saying something
along lthe lines of the resolved name is not the domain
controller. In the past when I added machines I just
used XYZ and not XYZ.com So I procedded to check WINS
and things look good there. We use an external dns
server (extenal to SBS2000 and not the network) running
BIND. All the updates and such look ok on it and looking
at the support pages I can do the nslookups correctly to
rectrive the SRV records. I am assuming that I am
missing something really really simple here.
Any one have any ideas or thoughts of things I could try?

Backup Exec 9.0 Disaster Recovery
Anyone done one yet?
We have a new PowerEdge 2600 going out in a week, so I thought I'd check
this out, as this is my first Backup Exec 9.0. SBS 2K is the latest SP1 CD
package. All new.
The first bout of failures prompted a download of build 4454 from Veritas,
but I still have the problem.
I can backup and restore from a functioning server, to the same state
server, but the disaster recovery is.. well... a disaster.
1) Build the server, do a backup, and then do a restore of data and Exchange
data from tape, all OK.
Keep the tape, and trash the server.
2) Start again following http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/243037.htm
I get to item 23 on the list, and then.....failed with error code: a000848c
Hex. http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/256057.htm
3) Ah well...build the server (again) using the CD's back to a fully
functioning state. Same as 1). Do an inventory, and catalogue, and try to
get the exchange data off the original tape.
........failed with error code: a000848c !!!!!!!!
Yet I can restore the user data from this original tape to the number 3)
machine.
Veritas says a000848c HEX is incorrect user accounts, and / or passwords.
Yet I was very careful. Only the administrator account (created during SBS
install) was used. No other accounts were created. The password used was the
same in both. Veritas was "assigned" to the administrators account. No
other accounts or passwords were used. In fact I used identical info when
configuring 1) and 3).
Anyone help please?

security question
1. How can I block all external ip's from accessing terminal services on my

2. What is the best way to block all remote access to my sbs server using

Can I specify, for example, an allowable computer name.

Song of the Week - July 20, 2003
Here we are -- into the 21st century -- with all this technology and
advancements around. So what happens? We turn on our computers, and things
work just fine one day. Then they don't work the next day. It's enough to
make a grown man (or woman) cry! So, with that, let's turn to a marvelous
Broadway musical, "Bye Bye Birdie", where there's a tune that asked the
timeless question:
"What's the matter with kids today?"
or "What's the matter with programs today?"
Bugs!
I don't know why programs still have bugs these days!
Bugs!
Programs don't work, they just fail each day!
Bugs!
They are disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:
Bugs!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
Bugs!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can't these programs work like they did in DOS ---
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with programs today?
Software!
We buy some many versions of software these days
Software!
Try it! Buy it! Download it! Break it! Crash it! What, no backup?
And while we're on the subject!
Software!
They're just impossible to control!
Software!
With their awful GUI screens and prompts and illogical error messages!
Why can't they write code like we did

No internet access through 'Backoffice Internet Access' group - help
Having now successfully added XP (home) and 9.x clients to my first SBS 2000
server I cannot seem to get internet access to happen by allowing access
through ISA to members of the 'BackOffice Internet Users' group.
I have a single BackOffice Internet Access Protocol rule which has to be set
as follows to work
- protocol = all IP traffic
- applies to = Any request
If I set the "applies to" to 'DOMAIN\BackOffice Internet Users' and
"protocol" to 'all IP traffic' clients can get HTTP access but no NNTP or
POP3 access. If I try to select certain IP filters eg NNTP there seems to
be no effect.
I am stumped as to why this happens and I understand that with access set
this way my server is not as secure as it could be.
I am under the assumption that
- users are members of 'BackOffice Internet Users'
- internet access is granted through ISA to ''BackOffice Internet Users'
- so clients should be able to access the Internet according to the IP
packet filters that have been selected (in my case only all IP traffic seems
to work)
I have full patches applied according to hfnetchk pro4.
Can anyone point me in the directions of some help?

Cannot browse network on SBS 2000 when using ZyWALL VPN
Hi
I have problems browsing my SBS 2000 domain and connecting shared
drives when using VPN access using a ZyWALL. The local network is
192.168.1.0/24. When I connect from another local network range (e.g.
192.168.21.0/24), I can browse the network with no problems. However,
when I dial to some ISP and use a routed IP address, I can no longer
access the resources (Run \\192.168.1.11 responds with "Network path
not found."). The strange thing is I can ping the server, I can use
other resources such as SMTP. Only NetBIOS performs strange. I
uninstalled ISA server because I thought it might be an ISA server
problem - this didn't solve the problem. There is no WINS server
running.
Is there a way to set NetBIOS access parameters like hosts_allow in
Samba?
Thanks for any help.

Help Exchange SP3 Problems
Hi,
Since upgrading the echange server on our SBS server to SP3 we can no longer
send an item as an attachment. If you right click on an object and click
send to mail recipient i get an error saying
'object not found'. If I run the fixmapi.exe i can then send. However if i
log off and log on again it fails again.
Also I have noticed that if I try to add the shared fax service in outlook
2002 it will accept the the service first time but does not display it as a
listed account. If you then go back into accounts and try to add it again it
says it can not add the service as it already is installed.

Server Status Report and Network Browsing

I've been trying to have the Server Status Report run twice daily and have

send the report just fine to a mail inside the domain...
2nd - after I installed SP4 clients (win9x and 2000) can no longer browse

any ideas are greatly appreciated!
