Hi all!

At a customer site I have three computers that can't logon to the SBS
domain. It is two Win XP Pro and on Win 2000 that can't logon. There's
also three other Win XP Pro clients and a bunch of Win 98 clients that
work as normal. The affected computers hangs at either the Applying
personal settings or just a blue screen with the mouse pointer on. The
problem occured this morning, previously there haven't been any
problems.
The server is just a week and a half old, and the onl thing I changed
yesterday was to add the WINS-server in the DHCP-server broadcast to
speed up the connection on the XP-clients. Of course I have tried to
remove that entry, but that didn't help at all
All computers have their IP-address via DHCP, and I have verified that
they get the right DNS-settings, WINS-server, Netbios and so on. There
are no strange entries in the event logs and I have removed the
computers from the domain and added them under another name, tried
different user accounts and so on. Logging on to the local machine is
possible and then you can connect to the shared resources on the
server.
Do anyone have any suggestions to what to try next, I don't want
reformat the computers.

Thanks in advance

Johan

Thanks for your advice!

The DNS points to the internal NIC on the server and I have tried
setting the NIC to 100 mbit full duplex (the network has a 3COM
switch).
The IP-settings on the server and the clients that can't logon are
exactly the same. I read somewhere that there could be problems if the
time settings were different on the client and server, so I checked
that too.

Do you really mean exactly the same ip settings? If your server has an
ip of 192.168.16.2 then the workstations should have ips of
192.168.16.10 and 192.168.16.11 ( or something similar) with the same
subnet. Your server's internal nic should not have a gateway if you
have two nics while the workstations should have a gateway that points
to the ip of the internal nic. The workstation should be able to ping
the server by ip and name.

How many nics in the server? Make sure the internal one is on top in the
bindingorder.
You do have options 015, 044 and 046 in the DHCP-server set?

Then you would also need option 006 (router).
Gateway should be blank on internal nic and both nics should point to your
DNS-server.
On external nic only TCP/IP should be bound.

Hi Johan,

Thank you for using Microsoft Technical Support Newsgroups.

Since everything else appears correct, you may be experiencing the WinXP

Trust me...you'll need the info with those XPs.

Is the DNS on the nics in the server pointing to the internal NIC of the server?

Yes, both the nics on the server have the internal IP-address of the server
as DNS server.

The really strange thing is that some of the clients can logon but some
can't.

When I log on locally to the clients the logon goes fast, but it takes about
twenty seconds to manually map the drives on the server. But after it is
done, the access is faster on these computers than those who are logged on
to the domain. And there are no unusal events in the eventlog. Are there any
other logs that can give me a clue?

Johan,

You probably checked this already, but ensure that on the affected client
machines, network settings, that the internal ip address is explicitly
entered in DNS settings, and that there are no_other_entries in that box.

an ipconfig /all can show you correct settings, but logons can be extremely
slow or impossible if the above condition is not met.

Thanks for the advice. I have checked several times, but most often by using
the ipconfig /all. I'll do a more thorough check tomorrow.
I know that missing or incorrect DNS-settings can slow down logons with
several minutes. But can these settings make logons impossible?

My theory is that replacing the nic forces you to set up the network
configuration again, which may result in a correct configuration. Problem
solved, must have been the nic ;-).

Johan

It's extra hard to replace the nics when they are embedded on the MB. But
deleting and adding the network configuration might solve the problem.
What's the easiest way to do this?
Should I just delete the netwotk connection and then adding it again? Won't
the settings be retained then when I add the network connection again?

Re: XP and Win2k clients cannot logon to the domain by Johan

Mon Jul 14 09:48:29 CDT 2003

I was at the client now and added option 015 in the DHCP-server. No luck, so
I disabled the network connection and then uninstalled the NIC. Rebooted,
the computer found the NIC installed it and then I had a network connection
named "Local Area Connection 2" (freely translated from Swedish) and still
the same unability to logon to the domain.
Should I delete settings in the registry or somewhere else?

Re: XP and Win2k clients cannot logon to the domain by Merv

Have you tried setting the workstations up in a workgroup, then rebooting
and re-joining them to the domain? Maybe also delete the computer account
for these workstations on the server and then recreate it. Also, try
setting the workstation NIC to anything but "autosense". And maybe disable
AV software (and any other 3rd party software) on the workstations until you
get the logon problem fixed.

One last thing might be to set up the workstations with static IP addresses
(and GW, SM, DNS, etc.) to see if this resolves the issue.
