After yesterdays debacle with the Nachi virus, my client
is finally willing to spend a few buck on a virus pkg.
Does anyone have advice on what's out there and what they
cost?

I don't want to just blindly buy from the big boys if
there's something better that only pros know about.

What about Sophos? I used their download to fix our
problem and it worked well.

On the cheap side, can you install homeowner type ($50)
on just the server and not bother with the clients behind
the server? Or do those cheap packages not install on
Server OS? They all spec Win 2K pro, don't mention server.

What are your "threat" locations?

Where does email enter into the server?

Who blindly clicks on emails?

Get your antivirus on your Exchange server AND on your desktops.

Trend
Panda
AVG

Strip off the nasty attachments...

....but.... that said Nachi comes in via port 135 and inside a server
environment port 135 should not be open to the outside world.
Furthermore, patching with security bulletin 03-026 would have prevented
Nachi worm.

So don't just depend on A/V on that issue. You had a patching/firewall
issue IMHO.

What about NAI (McAfee)?

I am using it and I am happy...

The Srv/exchange solution isn't that expensive...

Just personal preference. I've just had good luck with Trend [my fav]
Panda is a fav of one of my geek buddies
AVG is really cheap.

Bottom line..get something you like and stick it on there.

I really am very fond of Sophos. Updates can be done completely
automatically, even RAS-clients get updated. Install is easy, documentation
very well, support (if you need it) just great.

we've recently been implementing AVG not just due to its inexpense. AVG
operates in a different manner than most other AV products in that is has
stopped viri because they behave in a viral manner rather than relying on a
definition in the viral database. Other packages are capable of this, often
referred to as heuristic checking, in our experience the AVG heuristics seem
more capable and less resource intensive than other products.

What Virus pkg? by Aubrey

I will skip the "What is your data worth?" blather ...
Go Directly to Trend Micro
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/suites/c-s-m-
suite/overview.htm
CDW, etc. have good prices. Trend lists Distributors,
Resellers, and Consultants to fit your business model.

We have used Trend for two years plus. Especially like the
automatic Client Updates as there are ten desktops on the
LAN and twenty notebooks on domain but offline 99% of the
time. All notebooks got hit by the 823980 RPC NT Authority
System Shutdown, as we did NOT have Automatic Updates
turned on. And Trend still has never found an 'infection'.
