Hello.

I'm working for a small business which is moving, and I've
been given the systems responsibility. We are keen to
implement a server at the new site (we're currently peer-
to-peer), but I have no idea what version to go for. Cost
is a big issue.

We will initially have seven users, most running Win2K but
some will be XP pro. We need the server to hold databases,
files and we'd like to instigate roaming profiles too.
Data security will be extremely important. We will also
have a 512k net connection, potentially with a VPN
connection to another site (we're planning to get a VPN
Router to deal with this).

Any input would be great. Thanks very much.

In a similar (but slightly larger) situation, I called Dell and ordered
their entry level server with a current processor, 1 GB of RAM, enough drive
space to cover my needs and SBS 2000 pre-installed with 25 CALS. Got out
for less than $5000 for all of it.

I'd recommend SBS 2003 Premium, so that you'll have SQL for your database
and ISA for data security. Also, if your budget is tight, consider options
that support future expansion when the budget allows. For example, it's
easy to add hard drives, but less easy to add a hardware raid controller, so
you may want to spring for the controller now and the extra storage capacity
later.

If you follow Kevin3NF's advice to go with Dell, you'll find that most of
their options cost the same whether purchased pre-installed or afterward.
One exception is RAM - I've always bought Dell servers with the minimum
amount available, then I buy the additional from Dell Software and
Peripherals. If you order it with the server, or tell them it's for a
certain serial number, they'll cover it under the server's warranty. Or,
you can order it from Crucial for even less.

The "roaming profiles" & "most running Win2K but some will be XP pro"
sets a few alarm bells ringing. For roaming profiles to work properly, all
machines need to have the same software loaded, & preferably be running the
same hardware.
