At a client I have a SBS 2000 running where I want to backup both
files and Exchange to a USB-harddrive. FOr a very long time backup
from Veritas has been running like a dream, but for some reason it
stopped a couple of weeks ago.

I am able to do the full backup of the Exchange part and it will
succeed and finish to verify the backup. However, this is not the case
with the file share they are having - each time a backup is made from
this the server will crash (i.e. all icons dissapear and the logon
screen disappearr) and there is only the power swithc left to rescue
us - ane I don't belive this has been the intention from MS or
Veritas :-)

Any experiences like this or any ideas on where to start looking to
get my client start smiling again :-)

Maybe a corrupt file ..
Have you checked the integrity of the file system ?
What Updates MS or Veritas occurred prior to the issue ?
What event log issues ?

OK....this turned out to be something completely different from what I
expected :-)

This is a new client and I haven't configured their server myself. My
first try was to make the backup with WIndows backup inst=E9ad - and POW
it went down again. I then tried to look at the speed at which it was
backing up which was at somewhere near 100 MB per minute - really not
fast enough after my opinion.

I then discovered that even though the server has a built in scsi-
controller the data disc was an IDE-disc so we tried copying every
data from the IDE disc to a new IDE-disc to see if the speed changed -
but it didn't.

OK - the IDE-slot must be broken I thought and ran into the customers
24 hours on-site support agreement with HP - I rang them but ran into
the problem that they are not supporting hard discs on the IDE-slot -
especially not if it is not a HP disc. The IDE-slot is only for CD-
ROM's

In the end I think we will exchange the IDE-disc to a SCSI-disc, mount
it and everyone will be happy - but the IDE slot is still broken :-)
