A quick question,
A user today shut the server down during a power outage. She forgot to
acknowledge "please eject media" message in Backup Exec. The job was at 99%
complete. The amount of data looks correct, though. Is the data ok on the
tape?

I can try a restore and have not done yet on this tape. The ominous "failed"
message is troublesome. I am going to set it automatically to eject for me
via this article.

Should I be concerned?

Check the job log for that backup and determine what it was doing when the
server was shut down. If it was verifying I think it should be ok, but if
you are uncertain just re-run the backup. You might consider setting up the
backup job so that if it fails the first time it automatically tries again.

I've found that Veritas calls backups "failed" if it can't backup one file.
Two file types cause this on our network. If someone's left Quickbooks
open, it'll think that the quickbooks database is a corrupt file and cannot
backup. Same if someone has a .pst file open. If one of those things
happens, it'll call the backup a failure, even though the rest of the server
backed up fine.

I see that in my logs. I have two situations. One is where the backup worked
but with exceptions. Like a file was in use. And another where BE went to
backup up a directory that was deleted and BE could not find. The second one
is reported as a failure. Odd.

Go to selections and clear out any deleted selections. This will hold
true for mailboxes also.

Veritas Backup Exec. 99% complete. Failed by Keith

Keith
Fri May 07 07:12:47 CDT 2004

Hi,
If the backup completed prior to the shutdown then you
should be okay. If the backup header info. did not
finalize then you may have a problem.
