Hello SBS'ers!

I've quickly searched the newsgroup, but I didn't get any results about
my next little "request", so here goes:

1) Running firewall client on all of the workstations (all workstations are
Win2K and patched).
2) Director wants to use the program WS-FTP to update her company website
from the office instead of waiting to get home.
3) Do I have to set up a packet filter for the specific port that WS-FTP
uses to allow the program to run off of her workstation?

TIA,
John

I don't think a packet filter is required. The first few hits on this
Google search talk a little more about it.

for many things a packet filter may work, but FTP needs special attention.

WS_FTP works if the ws has the Firewall Client installed. Only problem being
the interaction of ISAFC and WS_FTP will normally result in a PASV ftp
session, if the FTP server does not support passive mode it can be tricky.

I feel as if I need to chat about the three types of ISA client, but it's
all covered (including the special considerations for FTP) on the
isaserver.org site.

Hi Rick,

No. That is meant for FTP server and you certainly don't want that on your
SBS box.

Thanks for the info, but is there someone out there using an FTP program on

anyone out there updating their website through SBS 2000?

Yes, I have accounts using SBS2000 and WS_FTP. I have at least a few
accounts that update their external websites using ftp clients on
SBS2000 networks.

grrrrrrrrrr, complete instructions follow this line of text.

Install firewall client.

instructions end before this line of text.

Seriously John, WS_FTP should work through the firewall client, you should
have to do NOTHING (but install it). In what way does it go wrong?

I've successfully used ws-ftp, cuteftp, and smartftp all on workstations

Can you post your FTP log so we can see what's happening and what error(s)

Hi Mick,

I went back to this one client's office and reviewed all of the settings
everyone has mentioned in this thread. The firewall client is up and running
fine, however I get an error message connecting to the client's ftp site. I
even uninstalled the program and reinstalled the program thinking it might
be because the client installed this program when they only had NT server
and not SBS 2000, but this didn't work either.

Hi Kevin,

Here's the ftp log:
WINSOCK.DLL: WinSock 2.0
WS_FTP Pro 6.51 2000.05.15, Copyright © 1992-2000 Ipswitch, Inc.
! failed local chdir to F:\
- -
connecting to 216.176.28.127:21
Connected to 216.176.28.127 port 21

! Connection failed www.client's domain.org

I've setup the client's settings on my laptop and I also can't connect while
I'm at her office, yet I can connect to her site when out of her office.
I've uninstalled and reloaded the program, but still no luck.

John,

First be aware that the version of WS-FTP you are using is quite outdated
(they are up to version 9). If you don't want to spend the $$ for an
upgrade, SmartFTP is a free FTP utility.

Second, I'm concerned about the reference to an F: drive -- (failed local
chdir to F:\). What is that all about? Are you trying to FTP to a local
system drive? Does the F; drive even exist? Perhaps that's a possibility of
why your FTP is not working.

I wouldn't expect it to be the version, WS was always well behaved. It is a
possibility though.

The change to F: failing also shouldn't be a concern, it's changing the
local drive/folder in prep for transfers, with it failing it will just use
whatever default folder is active.

Tried using PASV? I'd expect a check box in the site setup.

Hi Kevin,

I don't have a problem with this version except for here. With regards
to the "F" drive, my client is setting her zip drive to transfer the website
info. On my laptop, I have the local drive and it still does not connect.
I've downloaded the smartFTP program and will give that a try before I post
back to the newsgroup. Thanks anyway for all of your help!

Regards,
John

G'Day (or in my case right now, G'Nite) Mick,

You're correct on all the points below. I have a suspicion that it might
be the ISP who has control of the Netopia router in this office. For several
months I couldn't get SBS 2000 to connect to the Internet until I finally
called on late afternoon to have a tech from the ISP sheepishly admit that
they had turned DHCP on the router back on without my request. Once this was
turned off and SBS 2000 took over the DHCP service, it connected flawlessly.
I think I'm going to give them a call tomorrow morning to see what else they
might have "configured" for me without my authorization. Will post back when
I confirm with them. Thanks for all of your help as well!

Regards,
John
