Hi all

I have succumbed to the fact that my C drive is going to
run out of space sooner or later and I need to move it to
a new drive.
My current setup is 3 x 36gb scsi disks
1st disk 8gb C drive system files and 28gb D drive
program files and exchange logs
2nd disk 33.91gb user data
3rd disk 33.91gb exchange info store

I want to move the 1st disk to a new 36gb disk so I can
expand the C drive to 20gb? so I need to ghost the C
drive and move it. I would also like to keep the D drive
on the 1st disk with the remaining space so I would
probably need to ghost that too.

How would I do this? Would I have to stop any services
while I ghost the original drive? Do I then swap the
disks and image the new disk?
So many questions from a nervous IT bod!

Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Mark

The c: drive can be fine with that size. You just need to move stuff
off the C: drive that does not belong. Clientapps, Company, users and
Exchange logs and databases can all be moved off the C: drive. I see
that you have most of that stuff off already. What is happening that
you think the C: is going to fill up? The only thing going on to the
C: drive would be service patchs which have very little growth.

Do a search for old logs, temp files and dmp's. I think with a good
install the C: should take about 6 gigs.

You may move the paging file if you have not already.

I set up a nightly routine to delete all files from the badmail folder
which sometimes is on the C: drive.

Normally if someone had bought 3 scsi drive the intention was to run
Raid 5.

Ghost is run from a bootable floppy. Or it is when I use it. All
services are stopped when that is happening. Do test imaging on a
workstation first just to get a feel for how the program works.
Personally I don't see a need for it. If you said that your server was
set up with a 4-6 gig C: partition then I would be looking at
changing things.

Thanks Jim

I posted on here about mirroring my C and D drive and
somebody posted back that 8gb is not a big enough
partition for the C which worried me a little! I still
have nearly 2gb free space and I havent moved the paging
file yet which is 2gb so there is still plenty of room in
my eyes.
I've managed to get my boss to buy 3 extra scsi drives
(woohoo all that space!!) so I am going to mirror my
first disk (system, boot partition) and then maybe create
a raid5 with three disks for user data leaving the
exchange info store on its own or could I include it on
the raid5??

thanks for your advice Jim

If you are going to mirror now, after the build then you can only do s/w
mirroring which will tax your system and SUCKS. 8GB WILL fill up before you
outgrow your server so the question is....now that you have these hard
drives....do you want to do it RIGHT now or right later?

Whats the alternative to software mirror? OK probably
hardware mirror but how do i implement that?
and why will the 8gb get used up? There is nothing on
there to grow and its only patches that go on to the C
drive so surely they will not fill up the drive?

I do not seewhy it might fill up any time in the near 2 years. If you
were wanting to upgrade the server to SBS 2003 I would be getting
creative with rearranging partiton space but with what you have I
would hold the course.

Hardware mirror requires a scsi controller card that does the
processing on the card. As Mark mentions if you are going to goof
around with new drives, take a bit of time to plan out what you want
to do and why. Try your best to do what will operate with the greatest
efficiency over the long term. Hint: Hardware mirroring or raid
control is argued to be more efficient. Go to the Adaptec web site for
more unbiased discussions on raid. ;-) Tom's Hardware website may have
some articles also or just google.
