We have an SBS2000 installation, plus some users with Compaq PDA's. I have
setup our filewall to allow incoming POP3 connections, which works and
allows remote users to connect and get their email via POP. My problem seems
to arise when the remote user using their compaq PDA tries to send emails,
the server thinks it's spam so does not allow it to send it.

Any ideas ?

Merry Christmas to all.

Regards

Roger.

Just a note here:

I use a Pocket PC with SBS and what I do on the workstation is sync
everything but the inbox with Outlook. I then set up IMAP folders to sync
across the internet. This allows me to still have synchronization without
the need for Mobile Information Server or my workstation.

Now to your issue: what antispam software are you using. If the PDA is
effectively able to send mail, then the problem probably lies with the
antispam software.

HTH,
Scott

Well this is where it gets really sticky, because essentially these PDAs are
not authenticating to the domain, and because they are connecting via pop 3
in a method other than what the Server it expects, they are in fact
considered relay clients.

Essentially you have to set up a second SMTP virtual server which allows
relays from the specific IP range that these PDAs use, or you can look at
some of the other options for allowing relaying, without becoming an open
relay.

There are several KB articles you should read on securing Exchange 2000 from
becoming an open relay server.

Hello Roger,

You should be able to authenticate and relay off the SBS box from the PPC
device, just like you would with Outlook Express.

Make sure you have the "domain" filled in on the properties of the "POP3"
service on the device.

You may have to use "domain\username" for the username.
