I have a client with and Outlook/Exchange problem that just started. Certain
items - emails, appointments, contacts etc. - will not open in Outlook. The
error message just says "Can'r open this item."

Users can enter an appointment and it saves it OK (or appears to) but they
are then unable to go back in and edit them.

I have checked the Event Viewer for any Exchange messgaes that may be
popping up and nothing is showing. I checked the Exchange 2000 database with
ESEUTIL and ISINTEG and both showed that the file store was OK. I can log in
as Administrator and send myself an email and it shows up, but I am unable
to open it. I can save an appointment and then reopen it just fine. If I
look in the "M" drive, I can open the appointment with notepad but if I try
to open any of the emails the same way, I get an error message saying "The
system cannot find the path specified."

Also, when I open up the security tab for the Exchange folder, I get an
error that says "The permissions on Inbox are incorrectly ordered, which may
cause some entries to be ineffective. Press OK to continue and sort the
permissions correctly, or Cancel to reset the permissions."

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Yancey

Sounds like someone messed with permissions on the M: drive or ran a program
that did. The moral is don't even LOOK at permissions on the M: drive. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309766 You may have
to make a PST from the mailbox with exmerge, delete and recreate it, but
there may be better ways.

I did not alter the permissions on the "M" drive - I just looked to see what
was showing up. According to the article, I am seeing what I should be
seeing. What concerns me is that the emails show up on the "M" drive but
they cannot be accessed like the appointments can be ie. they show up in the
list of files but cannot be opened.

I am still leaning towards something happening with the permissions on the
"M" drive but I do not know who/what would have been messing with them. If I
use exmerge to backup the mailboxes, will deleting the account from Exchange
and then recreating it fix the problem?

Thanks,
Yancey

I used exmerge to backup the Administrators mailbox but the Inbox came over
empty. There are 38 email messages listed in Outlook (of which 0 of them
will open) but none get backed up when I use exmerge.

I also created a new user and send that account an email. The email came in
but that user is unable to open it.

Has anyone used the Cacls.exe utility recently?

"Permissions on <FolderName> are incorrectly ordered" error message when you
view the permissions of a subfolder in Windows 2000

I have not and I doubt that any of the users have - especially on the
server.

Problem Solved - Symantec scanning for Exchange was not starting up. Once I
got Symantec started, all started working OK.

Thanks,
