I give up. I had a user who needed a zip utility. I downloaded ZipGenius
from MajorGeeks. It worked, but he had some problem while printing and then
couldn't access his email or run Office programs. I uninstalled ZipGenius,
but here is the current situation.

He has a Win98 workstation with Outlook 2000 attached to an SBS2K server
running Exchange 2K. He has Office 97 professional with Office Small
Business 2000 installed over it. (We kept 97 for Access.) He cannot open
his mailbox. When he tries to start Outlook, he gets a message that the
information store cannot be opened. He also cannot get to his mail from
other workstations running either Win98 or XP and Outlook 2000. He can,
however, get to his mail from a workstation running Outlook 2003.

He also cannot start Word or Excel. He gets an error message saying "The
Windows Installer failed to install the program associated with this file."
He cannot uninstall Office and can't reinstall Office. I thought it might be
a Windows Installer problem, so I tried reinstalling Windows Installer and
got a message saying, "The specified service already exists."

However, when I logged in as that user on an identical workstation, I got
the same problem. Even after I disconnected that workstation from the
network, I could not open Word or Excel, which are installed on the local
hard drive. I could open them if I logged on as someone else.

I can't tell if it's a user issue or a mailbox issue or both. Can't
understand why it would affect a locally installed copy of Office on a
disconnected workstation, except that I told the machine to copy down user
settings when I logged on to that workstation the first time.

Can anyone suggest a plan of action? I thought I'd delete and recreate the
user, but I'm not sure what the ramifications of that are.

I'm a big one for pointing folks elsewhere and maybe we have some Office =
"Experts" out there but this really is an Office issue as opposed to =
SBS.

Are you using roaming profiles?? if so you may have to delete this =
users profile and start over

The only software thats in use here that MS still provides any level of =
support for is SBS 2K and OL 2003

I wouldn't delete the user...just turn off roaming profiles if in =
use...if profile is stored on the server...delete it...if installed on =
the machine...delete it.

There are office utilities which will do an 'erase' of all Office =
installations files..not just an uninstall. That will let you =
re-install the apps. But this user needs to get up to supported =
versions of the software

Thank you. The reason I thought it's an SBS problem is that the same problem
appeared for the same user on different workstations. I now think that there
are two related problems. I was able to resolve the Office problems by
logging on as a different user on the machine and was then able to delete and
reinstall the office apps. Now it's time to tackle the "Unable to open
default e-mail folders" problem. I think you're right that it has to do with
roaming profiles, though. That's why the problem followed the user to
another machine. Still don't know why he can get to his email in Outlook
2003. I don't really know anything about roaming profiles, but I guess I'll
learn.
