I have a 2000 Small business server w/25 cals. We now need to separate
servers e-mail, SQL etc and need to upgrade to a full Server 2003 enviroment.
Does anybody know the best and easiest way to do this. I see a SB 2000 to SB
2003 upgrade and a SB2003 to full version 2003 but not a 2000 sb to full
version 2003. Would I need to do a SB 2000 to SB 2003 and then a SB 2003 to
full ver 2003? Do I need to purchase both upgrades? What do I purchase for
the cals both the SB 2000 to sb 2003 and the SB2003-full 2003 cals? any help
would be appreciated.

You can still do this without upgrading to SBS 2003 first, but the migration
pack is no longer available. As Henry Craven recently posted: Speak to
your local Microsoft office and have them put you in contact with a
Microsoft Certified License Advisor.

Getting ahold of anyone at microsoft that can answer this question is like
pulling teeth. We've tried and just get the run around. When you say the
Migration pack is no longer avail which one are you talking about the sb2000
to sb2003 or the sb 2003 to server 2003?

The transition pack from SBS 2003 is still available. The SBS 2000
Migration Pack has to be arranged through a Certified License Advisor. You
can accomplish the upgrade without the intervening upgrade to 2003 if you
can find the right person, which I can imagine could be frustrating.

If you're in the US, you probably have a Microsoft Sales phone number in
your local white pages, or the main licensing phone number is (800)
426-9400. If you can't get these guys to refer you to a licensing advisor
(which would be a vendor, not Microsoft), post back letting me know where
you are located and I'll try to get more specific info.

Well I'm currently been on the phone with Microsoft for over 40 minutes and
their saying that I would need to upgrade to SB2003 first then Transition to
server 2003. As far at technically I will be the one doing it I just need to
know what software I need to buy and if I am going to have to rebuild a new
domain (which I would prefer not to do) or can I keep the Domain without
having to buy what I would consider 2 upgrades (Upgrade and Migration). I
live in Columbus, Ohio. Thanks for your help.

I'm still hoping to get a more helpful answer on this. However, since
you're looking to upgrade to the 2003-level products anyway, you do have the
option of buying the SBS version upgrade SKU, then the currently available
Transition Pack. The transition pack is what you need to separate the
products and remove the other SBS restrictions (don't forget you need
transition CALs too).

Other posters in this group have reported trouble locating the Transition
Pack, but it's a current product so I'm sure you'll find a source. At
worst, you may have to contact one of the big vendors and have them order it
for you.

If you decide to go that route, you can find the SKUs, etc. at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx

The word from MS is ....

< quote/>
The reason they need to do this is that the SBS 2000 Migration Pack had
some issues with the Sun-JVM suit, so customers need to go through the
local MS office to help them go through this upgrade.

Will the following procedure work, we have difficults buying other software,
will need to do it the manual way.

1. Add 2003 server sbs 2000 domain /addprep etc...
2. transfer all fmso roles to 2003 DC
3. install Exchnge 2003 on new DC
4. move mailboxes to new DC
5. demote sbs 2000 DC
6. install 2003 on old sbs 2000 server
7. with the previous name and ip add
8. install exchange 2003 and move back mailboxes
9. clients should now be able to log in

Will this process work?

it is long and tricky but will it work?
