    - Spam in Exchange server Hi, I was troubleshooting a problem on my SBS2K server where I am receiving an enormous amount of messages in the badmail folder. I followed the instructions to create a new bad mail folder and delete the old one but am getting thousands of files in the folder per hour. This prompted me to check for unauthorized relaying. When I checked the Default SMTP virtual server's queues, I found hundreds. I followed the steps to clean up the smtp queues (however, the only way I could get the Small Business SMTP Connector to stabilize was by clearing the check box for Anonymous access on the Authentication page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties. This stopped the bad mail messages and the SMTP queues, but also stopped users from receiving e-mail (although they were able to send just fine). Selecting the Anonymous access check box restored the users' ability to receive mail, but also brought back the bad mail messages and the numerous queues. What am I doing incorrectly here?     - FTP problem on SBS 2003 Hi, I have a SBS2003 with Firewall enabled. I want to access FTP on this server, from inside it works, from outside not. In Firewall settings FTP is allowed. On the FTP command line client I first get the message "Connected to ns1.simonet.cc." and after some time "Connection closed by remote host." What's wrong with my settings.     - info@domain account in SBS 2003 In a Small Business Server 2003 Premium: While trying to create a user with an account name of INFO and having the e-mail address info@ourdomain where ourdomain is our own domain, I receive the message that an account already exists with this e-mail address. I try to find in Active Directory such an account, to no avail. However, the creation/modification of the user account can be completed with no other problems. Subsequently, messages incoming to this "new" account are bounced back with an error message stating that more than one accounts are configured to this e-mail address. What gives? Have you ever encountered such a problem. I've tried searching this problem in MSDN, but obviously my search string/keywords are incorrect.     - slow response Hi I have sbs 2000 which has been going well for about 12 months. Now, if I press the "windows START" on the task bar either 1. nothing happens, ie no response, or 2.it only displays the first 3/4 of the menu. If I do a "ctrl,alt,del" and select "task manager" "processes" the START suddenly springs into action.From then on I can open and close START no problems. It is after half an hour or so of idle time when I come back it freezes again When the START gives no or slow response, I can still open up any of the desktop icons no problem. Any help appreciated.     - Remote Desktop Web Connection OK, this is new to me and I have read everything I have in book form. Unfortunatly everything is a few years old and talks more about dial-up rather than DSL connections and is absent any XP Pro data. I have also read most of the thread and just don't seem to be getting it all. :( I have an SBS 2000 machine and I have an off-site XP Pro client. This user wants to administrate the SBS over his DSL connection. The SBS is also using ISA server to act as point of outgoing tunnel for all on-site clients to get to the Internet. So, what's the best way for this user to get the job done?? Does the XP RDWC remove the need for Terminal Services? Do I sitll need to create a VPN connection to use RDW client?     - add user but no mail store? Hi I have added a new user via the wizard (deleted and re added about 6 times) and cannot connect the user to exchange from Outlook 2003? When she logs on she authenticates to the domain but every time outlook starts and trys to set up, it says cannot find user name in name list. The wizard seems to hang for about 3-4 minutes (or longer sometimes) with the progress bar about half way across then all of a suddon completes. Is that normal? I can't recall it doing that when I set every one else up????? Have checked the mail store and she never gets on the list, even though I used the wizard. In her properties, the email addresses are blank. Have entered details manually and nothing happens?? Have removed a user account that was never used (to free up a liscense) and removed that mail store. Using SBS 2003 standard. Any help would be appreciated.     - roaming user profile: odd behavior Hello, I have roaming user profiles setup in my office. the other day a user went to log in with a terminal service connection (they were off location), and it took a really long time for it to log on, about 5-7 minutes. And when it finally logged in, her desktop settings were different, and her connection to the exchange server was lost. It was like she had never logged in before, and was never setup to be a user. When she came in the next day and logged in locally, it was the same situation except she logged in much faster. So I reset her exchange connection and now she is working fine. I have concerns about why this happened, and was wondering if thier was any precautions I should be taking with my server right now. The terminal server a seperate machine than from my SBS.     - Poor data transmission performance in TS Hi group, we've used SBS 2000 for a year now with our Director who lives abroad being able to TS in admin mode to perform admin/ update duties on our Access XP database. There has always been a very very slight lag when he uses the database but now he say's it's around 5 times slower than normal & the excel spreadsheets, (that were no problem before), now has a lag. He can VPN into the Server & use RDP - it's just a performance issue. I've checked the RDP & Server settings - disable wallpaper, disable active desktop, use temp folders & delete on exit etc - setup for ultimum performance in other words!! There are no error messages & nothing in task manager sucks up resources. The annoying thing is that I can use the resources using our backuop adsl line with the same logon credentials just fine. He says there's been no patch updates put on recently & a spybot check proved clean. He's located in Italy & the office with the SBS Lan is in the UK.     - Inconsistant User ID requirements for various services I recently moved our small company to SBS 2003. After switching the clients over, a few folks have to use username@ourdomain.local in place of their regular username when logging into certain services (such as IMAP/SMTP, and even accessing sharepoint). The strange thing, is that not everyone has to use this. Myself, and a number of others can simply use their user name....any ideas on what is causing this inconsistency? The only thing I can see that might be common between those that are common with those affected, is the "default" address originally created was an alias (first.last@ourdomain.com as opposed to usernname@ourdomain.com) I haven't verified that it is true on all accounts, but I do know that changing the default address doesn't seem to make a difference after the fact. The two I know are affected were created with different templates, and their memberships don't very too much from those that aren't affected.     - Warning 2: MS04-040/889293 Cumulative Patch breaks Veritas Backup Update Hi, The installation of yesterday's IE cumulative patch on my SBS2K server broke the Veritas Update function on BEWS 9.1. Removing the patch (I'm guessing it was removable because I installed Windows Installer 3 last week) restores the Veritas Update function. This function is highly convenient because it keeps track of already installed updates. One of the functions that the IE cumulative patch modifies is I-Frame, which the Veritas Tech Support guy said is used on the Veritas Update site.     - OT Outlook problem Hi guys, I have an interesting problem with one of my users. New mail does not show in her Inbox when it come in. She does not have work offline checked. I can see that Outlook is doing its send/receive thing every minute or two and it appears to get her mail. The mail does not show in her Inbox unless she does something else in Outlook, kinda like poking it with a stick. WHen you click on anything in Outlook or dismiss a reminder then all of her mail magically appears. Any ideas? Background info: SBS2003. She has XP Pro and her Outlook is the 2002 that was installed by SBS2000 before I upgraded the server. No one else is having this problem. On trying to configure fax to go to a document library on the sbs intranet there is not hte option to do so. Is there another way to do this other than the wizard.     - FRUSTRATION when other Technical People Don't Give a :@&* Hi there, I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a really weird situation I have found myself in. Our company has taken over the maintenance contract for a server and a few PC's, but the server has been done in such a way that all the people who have looked at it, including me, are scratching our heads and all saying "I've never seen this before", and then walking away trying to not get too involved in it! Things have come to a head where there are issues to be dealt with and I am dumped right in the middle of trying to sort things out.. so see what you make of this.... The server is a reasonable spec P4 and it had Small Business Server 2000 media with it.... When you examine the system, you find that the thing has not been installed in a normal way..... The system appears to be running as a peer to peer network, no domain, active directory etc has been set up. Then to make things even weirder, it looks like Terminal server has been configured in some way (Application Mode), and the 90 days grace period has expired, but there is no way to check licences, nor are there ANY of the small business server 2000 tools installed. I am unable to access any of the network settings, even though I'm in under full admin rights, and the correct account... the whole setup appears to be a shambles... I was debating changing the Terminal server mode from Application mode to Administrator mode, but I am unsure of the benefits of doing this, plus, I don't want to do anything that may alter the settings of their custom software etc that is installed on this server. My gut feeling is that the easiest way forward here would be to just install a new server and configure the thing correctly for them. Introduce email under exchange (they have individual pop3 accounts on each pc) and get everything al organised centrally for backup etc.... but, I'd appreciate some feedback on any way I could get the current system sorted out better before I think of going down this route. In telephoning the people who supplied the server (I wont give their name here because I ain't as ignorant as they are) their attitude was "I didn't configure or install this, the guy who did, the manager is not in." When trying to find out when he would be in, or if he had a mobile number etc, the replies turned into a basic statement saying "Piss off we are not interested". I have to say that in the 20 plus years I have worked in the IT field, my attitude has always been to help other people in the same profession, no matter what the circumstances. We ALL need help at some point, yet, these sort of people never really seem to grasp this idea.. they just want the money and then sod all else. Any help or feedback would be very much appreciated.     - Users can't open .jpg files over INET Hello Everyone: My latest SBS 2K install seems to be really smooth, and the Trend CSM for SMB is just what the client was looking for. However.... (is there always a but or a however?) three of the workstations cannot open some, but not all, of the jpg files that they like to look at on the internet. They are all big race car fans, and like to look at the pictures from the previous weeks races. When the go to the site they get the opening page pictures, but when they click on "more" they get either nothing, or the little place holder that shows if you click on that settings in Tools, Inet options, Advanced If you right click on the area where the picture is suposed to be, you see that the properties are .jpg, that it has a file name, but in every case where the jpg file does not show up, the properties page says the file size is -1. Two of the client workstations are XP Pro, one is 2000 Pro. I have followed the steps in KB 283807 Any one seen this before, or know of a fix?     - or Body get into the mailbo I am getting calls from users who are set up to retrieve mail via POP; they are getting disconnected during retrieval session. Then when it retries they will get the same emails again and get disconnected again and repeat, repeat, repeat, till they have tons of the same emails. I looked into it and all I found is a blank email in their mailbox. I believe this is causing the disconnect during the retrieval session. I am not sure if this is a result of the first time they experienced a problem or the cause? When I delete the blank mail item then all is ok.     - AIT drive question Hello, I am running SBS2003 Premium. I am having tons of problems with my tape backup since upgrading from SBS2000. I am currently using the dreaded Travan tapes and have come to the conclusion that something else is needed. I need to backup almost 50Gb of data. My sales rep is telling me to get an AIT drive.     - Slow network and printing after XP SP2 SBS2000 mostly WInXP some Win 98 Installed XP SP2-- Firewall turned off. Trying to print to an hp Laserjet on a W98 printserver caused the apps to crash (Word, AutoCAD..) Reinstalled the printer driver from an XP computer Selected the hp from the list. Can print now but is very slow every step of the way. Other things network related are slow now as well. Printing to Printers on WinXP machines is normal. An Ideas?     - OT - GFI Mail Essentials on my SBS2K server I'm running SBS2K with Trend CSM antivirus software and also GFI Mail Essentials to filter spam. At the present time, I have the GFI bayesian filter set to deliver spam to a Bayesian folder off each users inbox (rather than deleting). Could someone tell me this: when spam arrives, does the Scan Mail for Exchange portion of the antivirus scan the mail message "before" it goes into the Bayesian folder? I'm trying to understand if some of this spam that sits in the users' Bayesian Inboxes could very well possibly contain viruses.     - about Email host change Dear all, My boss is planning to change the email host company. Because the SBS 2000 was set up by another person who is not with me now and I am new to this. I don't know what I should do to our exsiting setting of SBS 2000. I took a look at the existing setting for our SBS 2000, i noticed that we have 45 users, 45 pop accounts, we are using Microsoft connector for POP3 mailboxes. Furthermore, we are using User mailboxes not global mailbox. The connector routes all e-mail that is retrieved from POP3 accounts at my existing email host to the exchange users listed in the user mailboxes. We are also using VPN. I don't what I must do after I change our email host company. I read some books, searched for a while, it seems not so easy to find the related articles? Can anyone help?     - EMail problems, and more EMail problems I have an SBS2003 Server, with Exchange running. POP3 connector for download, working fine. First, I was sending directly via the SMTP connector, recently a number of ISPs have started rejecting our e-mails since I'm sending from a dynamic IP. (I recently changed ISPs and ComCast does not offer static, yet). So I setup the Smarthost to send using my webhost mail server, now everything bounces back ".... 550 Not a gateway". I'm pretty sure it is from the webhost, since if I disconnect the External nic, I get no response. As soon as I plug it back in, bingo "Not a gateway". So here are the questions : What did I miss in the Smarthost setup ? I'm not sure what to do for security settings, and the hosting company is not real helpfull (Not our problem). Do I need to ask my hosting company to allow my server to relay through them ? With a dynamic IP will they even be able to ?? OH, maybe I just had an idea, can I send through (should I be) the Comcast Server ? Any other ideas ?????     - Trying to connect a Client onto a Domain I have re-installed xp on a client which had crashed. I am now trying to add it to my sbs group. Client is set as workgroup, if try to change from workgroup to domain, asks for password then says "network cannot be reached". If try to run Client Disk (copied onto it, as doesn't have floppy drive), does Installing 2000 Network Section then stops at start of Configuring Win 2000 network. Saying "Network Location cannot be reached". I can ping server, external addresses. I can view webpages. Cannot map drives etc. But the client and sbs will not connect, the client has been created on the server, I have also tried creating it as a new client.     - SBSServer processes Port 80 blocked I had the problem in the past that processes running on the SBS server could not connect outbound on port 80 and would show up in the log as Blocked. According to Marina everything running on the server would be allowed outbound port 80 and was it my ISA configuration. For example McAfee Autoupdate would not connect (even with option use explorer proxy settings or manually entered proxy configuration) or programs connecting to the internet for a software update. Marina has reinstalled ISA and configured it out of the box. I still have this problem now with our application using XML to sync with a providors SQL database. Normal XML flat txt data uploads work fine but in case of binary data (product pictures) uploaded via xml port 80, will be blocked and only an allow rule with destination IP adress will make it work. The program is set to use and authenticate with the proxy, but it seems that tunneling is detected by ISA and blocked by default. This seems logical as a leak and trojan protection. Is this the case? Are allow rules the only solution? This problem is only at the SBS server itself. Workstations running Firewall client will work fine. Well I cannot open the about link because it cannot find the file. The error reports that the file should be in the documents and settings\local settings\temp folder !!!?? That seems to be wrong in my opinion. Is there another way to check how many licenses are installed ? I cannot find another way, tried searching the internet. Have anyone seen this before ?     - wireless connection on sbs2k My friend has bought a building next door and plns to take a computer from the existing network and install it in the new building. My question has to do with adding this new site to the existing network. This has as much to do with accessing records as well as sharing DSL connection. Its not terribly practical to hard wire the two buildings but I'm not sure where to locate the wireless pieces. Obviously, the new workstation has a wireless network card.. but in the main buiding, the server is located quite some distance away.     - Error when attempting to connect to the network Hello, I've gone through all of the steps adding a new user account in ADS and on the desktop. I configured the PC at my desk using my network connection. Everything worked fine - connected to the network. However, when I moved the PC to the user's location, now I receive the following message when attempting to view Network Drives: 'An error occurred while reconnecting X: to \\server-1\company Microsoft Windows Network The local device name is already in use. The server installation (on SBS2000) was successful after making config changes for a domain controller installation - i.e. the normal installation does NOT work on SBS2000. Using Symantec's Corporate Edition of Antivirus version 8.1.0.825. Should we
upgrade to 9.0 and its updates?

We have the 9.0 product already but have not installed as of yet. Wanted to
get some feedback on the new product.

Version 8.1 is doing a good job, currently. Is 9.0 much better? We will do
the upgrade but wanted to know how long we should wait.

Yes upgrade to 9.0.2.1000 this is the latest version that works with Windows
xp sp2.
