    - VPN and ISA server Hello, I have a cable connection running into a router which in turn feeds into a switch. From this switch I have a standalone server 2003 box and our sbs2000. The server2003 is a development server so we use vpn connections remotely to connect to it. These work fine from clients on the internet and it always connects on the first try. However, to access this server from our sbs2000 or from any sbs2000 client on our network we also need to use a vpn connection because the server 2003 is not part of our network, but rather in a dmz. When we try to access the server internally sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes 5 connections work and sometimes none will connect. If you let the connection redial for long enough it usually works. I don't have a clue on this one. If it works sometime you would think it would work all the time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is there some setting on the ISA server that I'm missing? One that is time dependent? Tag: Upgrade Questions Tag: 118228

    - Deleting old mail from server I have a SBS2K box with win2k clients attached to the server. Is there any way of deleting old mail from users deleted items and sent items from the server.     - aspperf.dll causing perlib event id error 1008 Hello there, I've had a problem with perflib event id 1008 (Open procedure for aspperf.dll has failed) since I installed our SBS 2000. I went to: http://www.smallbizserver.net/SBS2000/How_to_clear_perflib_errors_on_the_server.aspx and followed it to download the extensible performance counter list utility (exctrlst.exe) and disabled them all. This didn't seem to do anything - still lots of errors clogging our app log only then it was 1010 errors also. I then tried using the unlodctr / lodctr command to try to get them working correctly or stop them. One or the other. I've tried editing the registry per the event id website. I'm now in a situation where I just want perflib event id 1008 to go away. I am filtering out the event from the app event log, but I can only see this as a temporary solution.     - Post upgrade blues Following my upgrade to SBS 2000 at the weekend, I have hit my first real problem. If I told you that it affects only 1 person, I bet you could guess for yourself that it would be the man-at-the-top :-( Anyway, the problem is this. Mr Big has an XP Pro laptop. It worked fine on the old SBS 4.5 network. All PCs on the network (all XP Pro as well) are working fine after the upgrade. Mr Big's laptop takes an AGE to login - pauses for a long time at the 'Applying users settings' The DNS settings that are pushed to each client contain only the IP address of the SBS server (i.e. NOT the ISPs DNS settings). The DNS settings on the server (i.e. the TCP/IP settings behind the properties of the LAN connection) are set to point to the SBS server as well. The DNS forwarders are setup to point to 2 ISP DNS servers. Just for information, the server is using a single NIC, and connects to the Internet via a router.     - Dial-up problems - advice please. Like several other people in the UK, I've got a client who uses SBS with a standard modem for Internet access. He has to pay for telephone calls. He uses the POP3 connector to collect mail. No active caching on ISA, no Windows Update on PCs or server, no regular AV updates. Originally, the POP3 connector was set to collect mail every 30 minutes Mon-Fri 9am - 6pm and I tried a custom schedule for the SMTP connector, so that it would only be used Mon-Fri 9am-6pm twice an hour (like POP3). I could see that using a custom schedule makes the connector available in 15 minutes blocks, and the help suggested that during these blocks the connector would dial, at other times it would wait for something else to open a connection. The client's first phone bill was 175GBP (up from 50GBP dialling directly from a PC). The phone bill suggests that the SMTP connector dials for every outgoing email, whatever the time of day, and also holds the line open (idle time set to one minute before hang up) during the 15 minute blocks from the time the mail was sent until the end of the block. The client is not pleased. Changed schedule so POP3 dials 5 times a day and changed the SMTP connector back to Always use. Next phone bill was 150GBP. How can I tame the SMTP connector so it queues outgoing email and only sends when there's already a connection or at least only dials once every two hours? I searched the archives for this list, but this connection is behaving quite as the info I've found suggests it should. Client is a small non-profit and isn't allowed to get a fixed rate/no call charge dial-up line as they share a switchboard with a hospital. Any advice greatly appreciated.     - Client connectivity to ISA Hello all, I have runnig SBS 2K (current sp) and have 3 Windows XP Pro clients patched current. All appears to be working fine except (ah ha!) the ISA client icon in the sys tray when moused over pops up the message, "ISA server could not be detected". Clients can still access shared resources over the LAN, and browse the internet, but when I try to access an FTP site outside my SBS 2K network I receive premession FTP Folder errors (i.e. Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.) I'm logged in with Admin rights, can browse external FTP fine from the server.     - Shared Fax extra pages I am setting up the shared fax on my SBS 2000 server. The probelm is that every page throws an additional blank page. The blank page is also numbered. For example: Page 001 of 002 Continue 001.001 Page 002 of 002 Continue 002.001 Can anyone explain why this might be? The shared fax is set to paper size of A4, the cover page is set to A4 and the attached Word file is set to A4. The fax machine I am testing with is a plain paper A4 fax...it all should fit! Thanks.     - network question?? I have a question regarding the network setup with smallbiz. I'm in the process of setting up the network now and I came across this site( http://www.smallbizserver.net/sbs2000/network.aspx ). Is this the way that I should be setting up my network? I will have a cable modem, next in line will be the Linksys Wireless Router/Firewall and then out from there into a switch where all the computers including the server will be attached. Should I have it set up this way or should I have the SmallBiz Server set up with 2 NIC's and have it before the switch.     - OWA rejecting all client logins Installed SBS-2K and was instantly able to access OWA from a client machine within the LAN. Since then I have made numerous configs to the server. Now! OWA restricts login from any client machine inside or outside the LAN. (URL: http://ip-ddress/exchange/user) Upon entering the correct address as above OWA should open without prompting for login credentials.     - Trend CSMS (The new one) Installation First install of this. Nothing sensible in Google. I've got ScanMail (largely the same), and OfficeScan (shared folder installation can confuse) to work, but I can't seem to get the right info in the right boxes to load ServerProtect.     - Which do you all recommend....TZO or Static IP thru Verizon DSL??? Hi All, First off, thank you all so much for the advice and insight you've all given me. Verry helpful! I hope I can return the advice as I get more knowledgeable with SBS2K. My current question is in regards to the DSL connection I have for my proposed SBS2K setup. I currently have an aDSL connection thru Verizon at $59.00 a month. If I upgrade to a static IP address (for use with SBS2K/Exchange)...Verizon will charge me $89.00 a month (an additional $30.00 a month). That's pretty expensive for my small business, so I am looking at alternatives. I've read a little bit about TZO. It seems cheaper...but is it stable and better than getting my own static ip address? Or are there serious shortcomings? What TZO package do you all recommend??? FYI, this will be for a lan of 11 pc's running Win XP on SBS2K. I already have a website for my company hosted by hostdepot.com...so will that interfere with my company email address if I switch to TZO or a static ip?     - Installation Error-Disk 2 Office 2000 Premium-DMMFLYER.WIZ When I try to install disk 2 of Office 2000 Premium- Small Business Tools, I get an error regarding the DMMFLYER.WIZ file saying it cannot find it.     - OWA access from internet I have setup SBS 2000 with Exchange and ISA Server. I have two NIC's, one with a public IP and the other with a private IP. Everything seems to be functioning as it should. Everything works and we can access OWA from our network. My question is what would be the best way to configure the system to allow OWA from the internet? The default configuration by the wizard in ISS for the Default Web Site is using the private IP, so that I understand why we can't access fro mthe internet. I have already tried changing the IP setting in IIS for the Default Web to All Unassigned (just for testing), but the system didn't like that.     - E-mail program not connecting to ISA I have about 20 win98 clients connected to my SBS 2000 (I know win 98 doesn't play well...) We are accessing POP3 accounts from an outside ISP. Outlook will sometimes connect and other times, it will say the connection has been terminated. Usually when it gets terminated the ISA system tray icon has a red "!" in it. Does anyone know why this is happening? Am I missing a protocol somewhere? It just happens at seemingly random times, and it happens on some machines and not others.     - Deny "delete" permission on company folder I have a costumer with SBS2000 network with Win98 and Win2000 clients. He want to deny files and folders delete permission inside the "company" folders to prevent accidental deleting of important files. He wants to do it only on cliente computers for normal users only (not administrators). I am not sure about with permssion I have to remove and if I should simply unchek "Authorize" or if I check "Deny". Another problem is that Word and Excel write temp files in the same folder of the original files, and when you close the program, it will not be able to delete even the temp files.     - Installing 2nd SBS2000 server I currently have one server running Windows 2000 and SBS2000. For the sake of this message I'll call the domain mycompany.com. Someone else set up this server, who is nolonger here, but said that because we already have a website called mycompany.com we could not see mycompany.com in our network so He said he tricked the ISA software to use mc (short for my company) as the displayed domain. The machine name is sbs2000. At any rate, I am tring to install another server in the domain to run as a backup. Actually I am upgrading NT 4.0 & SBS 4.5 TO SBS 2000 onto a NEW server. The instuctions tell me to install W2k on the new server but keep as a Workgroup. The machine name is sbs2000-2. Did that. Now when I install SBS2K on the screen that asks for the "Full DNS name for new domain" I put in mycompany.com and the system says it has detected a duplicate DNS domain name on the network.     - RRAS and modem set-up Ok, I've posted about an error I'm receiving twice, and haven't had any help there. So, I'm changing tactics. I'm trying to set up a modem as a backup RAS connection (like for in case the T1 goes down). I can connect to the server via TS and VPN as it is right now when I'm connected to my ISP. I want to be able to dial directly into the server. It does have a modem and the modem does answer. I'm also running IAS on this server. I've read everything I could find on setting up a modem for RAS, and nothing has helped. We have a few seasonal employees that get email, but I have disabled there user account when they are not employeed (for security reasons).     - Automatic Updates Just a quick question, if I want to use automatic updates, but load them from one of our servers rather than the internet what is the best way around it? I have installed SUS onto the server, but I cant change the configuration of the client to point to the server, the only option I get is to download from the internet. Is there another way to change it to install from the server instead? Also would it be better to load from SMS, I have also downloaded a copy of this, but I cant see any of the computers our our domain listed in it.     - Firewall settings - reply Hi Chad I am following up on the reply to my question on the Newsgroup (see below). I am trying to set up an EDI system from my LAN. It requires access to the remote server over ports 21, 989, 990, and 3662. I have created protocol rules for each of these ports (both inbound and outbound) but my software fails at the point of the handshake, implying that the ports are not accessible in some way.I have set them up as TCP ports and specified the port numbers inbound and outbound (separate protocols under one protocol rule). I am trying to access the remote server from one of my workstations. I think everything is set up correctly. Can you think of anything I may have missed or overlooked? Yours John Wilson Hi John - First question is what machine(s) need access on these ports? If client machines, you need to create a protocol rule (& and protocol definitions), if the server is the only machine that needs these ports, then you are correct that you need packet filters. For your packet filters, I'm guessing you have both your local and remote ports set to a fixed port. It's been my experience that this does not work well, if at all. The side of the connection that is accepting inbound connections should be set to the fixed port number, with the client side being set to either All Ports or Dynamic. For example, if you are initiating a connection with a server on the internet (so that the remote server is accepting the incoming connection), then the remote port will be set to fixed and the local port will be set to either All Ports or Dynamic. If your server is accepting inbound connections from others, then the local port will be set to fixed and the remote port set to either All Ports or Dynamic. Also - unless you are accepting inbound connections from other machines on the internet, I would set the packet filters to be for outbound access only. If the clients need access, you'll need to expand Policy Elements and create a new protocol definition for each port you need open. If you're using the default BackOffice Internet Access protocol rule, then the clients should have access after creating these definitions. If you've locked down your outbound access, then you'll need to create a new protocol rule to allow the new protocol definitions you just created. -- Chad A Gross Lerman's Law of Technology: Any technical problem can be overcome given enough time and money.     - Memory Defragmentation Hi All, We are running a small business server 2000. Everything is working fine, except every few days it uses up almost all memory leaving only 3-5% available. When I run a Fast Defrag 2.0, it restores 45-55% of memory as available. But then again in a few days we are back to square one. Memory will be all fragemented! Is anyone familiar with this problem?     - Magic Disk not working on several XP Pro SP1 PCs. Why? Hello, A question. On a new SBS install, I installed the client diskette to add some XP PRO SP1 laptops to my network but when I click on the diskette and click setup, the PC freezes at "Installing Windows 2000 Networking" and I have to end the task. I am getting this mostly on new installs. And once when it did finally install, I could not surf the internet. I checked my settings and the domain information looked right. I manually installed the firewall client. My proxy looked right in the IE settings. Only with XP Pro boxes, others seem ok. Even Win98 boxes install ok. I posted a question before, I had the browser service set to auto. Could this of done it? No errors on the server side. no viruses. I read that all XP PRO and Win2K PCS on a network with an SBS2000 server should have the "Computer Browser" service set to Manual and it should not be on, otherwise you get a "forced election" error. Even though the Computer Browser defaults to Automatic on a clean install. I keep getting the broswer errors in my event log and it is maddening. If I turn off the browser service, I can't see other PCs in the network. If I set to "NO" on maintainserverlist, it is even worse. I have maintainserverlist set to "auto." What do you think?     - Global Catalog Failed Have SBS 2000 server (SP4) with no backup domain controller. DCDiag shows the following error in FMSOCheck: Warning: DcGetDcName(GC_SERVER_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355 A Global Catalog Server could not be located - All GC's are down. Warning: DcGetDcName(TIME_SERVER) call failed, error 1355 A Time Server could not be located. The server holding the PDC role is down. I have no Netlogon share any more and clients can no longer log on. Everything on the server seems to be working fine apart from this. Clients can access their Exchange mailboxes with no problems. I have tried a System State restore to no avail. Active Directory & Sites clearly shows NTDS as a Global Catalog server. Any ideas on how I can fix this ? Would an in-place upgrade help? Hi All

I have some upgrade questions if someone would be kind enough to answer.

1) We currently have SBS 4.5, I am planning on upgrading to SBS2000 but onto
a newer
machine, would I have to install 4.5 onto the new machine then install the
upgrade or can you
just install the straight upgrade and supply the old serial number.

2) Is there a FAQ for SBS2000 ?

3) I am interested in VPN for SBS2000 ? Does this work ok ? any known issues
? We have a 1Mb cable connection.

4) What are SBS2000 limitations as I remember from the 4.5 days you cannot
share with other networks ? Is
this still the same with 2000 ? What is the user limit ? Still 50 ?

5) Do most people that have SBS 2000 installation have a hardware firewall
or does the SBS2000 come with
ISA server ? If so is ISA server secure enough to stop unwanted
guests/traffic or would you recommend having a hardware firewall also.
Please exciuse my lack of understanding about ISA server as I have never
used it before.
