Hello,

I am attempting to upgrade my SBS2000 to a new box. I tried using Ghost and
moving the partitions to the new system using TCP/IP Peer to Peer. I have
run into hardware differences and Norton suggested using SysPrep. SysPrep,
however, cannot be used on a PDC.

I have looked for my particular situation with no luck. Does anyone have
any recommendations on the best way to complete this? Any information or
direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Greg

Hi Greg,

Just planting a seed here (it may turn out to be a weed).

How different is the hardware? Does the ghosted server boot up? If so (what
errors?) I'm wondering if an in-place upgrade or repair (whatever it's
called) run from the bootable cd1 would work?

I've zero experience in doing this, but I'm interested in your experience.

Look at the HAL in both computers, see if it's the same, or assuming the
they are a similar brand and same number of CPUs, they are probably the
same.

If the boot controller of the original computer is portable, you could move
it (temporarily) into the other server with your ghosted drive attached,
boot the system, resolve the driver issues with PnP and then remove the old
controller after the drivers for the new one are installed.

If you have tried moving a ghosted image to this other computer, did you get
a BSOD? What was it?

Thanks,

Yes, the image went across fine to the new computer. When I booted the new
computer I got the error "NTLDR is missing". Upon looking, I noticed the
new computer has a very small additional partition. I created a boot disk
with a modified boot.ini moving the boot partition from 1 to 2. It started
showing the Windows 2000 startup screen until it Blue Screened with a
"InAccessible Boot Device". As I mentioned before, I looked on Symantec's
support site where it talks about SysPrep. I will see if I can get the boot
controller moved unless there are any other ideas.

if the mobo is different then you have to do a fresh rebuild....no way
around it.
