We have a Dell Poweredge 2300 server, running SBS 2000. We are having a
problem where the server randomly freezes. This is generally, but not limited
to, when everyone has gone home - so late evening, early morning. There is no
discernible pattern, for instance, there is no cleaner coming in at 10:00pm
and switching something off.

Nothing is being recorded in Event Viewer, all we have is the about event id
when the server is rebooted. As the crashes happen out of hours, no blue
screen is being seen - the monitor has gone to sleep and cannot be woken - I
don't see this as being the problem, as I'm typing this I would put money on
the monitor having switched off with no effect to the server.

The last one was at 6:10am this morning, about 20 minutes before anyone
arrived for work.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm
an SBS newbie, so try to talk in clear english, fewer acronyms are better ;-)

I wonder if this could be bad RAM.

How much memory do you have in the server?
Do you have more than one memory chip installed?

If so, you could try and remove one of the chips and see if that resolves
the problem. If not, try removing another one.

Also, try a memory checker: http://www.goldmemory.cz/

Hi StudioTwo,

Thank you for the reply. We have 1Gb of RAM, using 4 chips - the maximum for
this server. We ran a memory checker, which did not find any errors.

Since posting this, we have added a new surge protected plug - fingers
crossed as it hasn't crashed yet. When (or if) it does, someone has suggested
replacing the graphics card. If that doesn't work, then we will start
swapping/removing memory.

We're having the same problem, only mine now shuts down when people are IN
the office. It just did the 6th time in 4 days!!!!

We have a PowerEdge 2650 with good memory in it. I will check the power
supply if/when it happens again to see if that changes anything.
