Began noticing this earlier today, that email sent to addresses like
hotmail, yahoo and excite were coming back anywhere from 1 to 3 hours after
sending with the following message:

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a
specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact
your system administrator.

< remt28.cluster1.charter.net #4.0.0>

Other addresses are ok and have been confirmed as received by the fact that
they have replied...

Seems like this sort of thing happened quite sometime ago with AOL addresses
and I had to put "mail.charter.net" or something like that in a field when
re-running the ICW to correct the problem (which it did). Not sure if this
is the same type of issue.

Any ideas on where to begin to look or is it a problem with Charter?

Our email (pop3) and web hosting is with one company and our internet
connection (cable) is provided by Charter Communications.

Maybe Charter is blacklisted. Try sending mail using Outlook directly to
their SMTP servers to those addresses and check if it works.

Thanks for the reply, but I need a little more info to go on.

How do I "Try sending mail using Outlook directly to their SMTP servers to
those addresses and check if it works."

Thanks...

My suggestion is to connect a computer directly to the SMTP server. This
will test if you problem is at your server or theirs. You can even user
Outlook Express to do this.

Just open OE and create a internet mail account just like you were setting
up a stand-alone machine (this would work best if it's a computer directly
connected to the internet -parallel to the SBS-... but it is not absolutely
necesary). When you create the email account put the SMTP server for sending
mail that you are using on the SBS. Then just send an email to whatever
addreses you are having problems and wait to see if you get and NDR or the
user gets the message.

Figured it out after bypassing server (see thread Bypass SBS). With
outgoing mail at "mail.charter.net" wouldn't work. A call to their tech
support revealed a change to "smtp.bay.chartermi.net" DONE DEAL...

Reran ICW wizard with smtp.bay.chartermi.net and email going right through!

I don't know how many times I've busted a coconut looking for a problem on a
previously singing SBS, only to find that the problem is external. I've
started looking outside first.
