I have a "standard" SBS2000 network:

SBS2000 IBM server with:
- ISA (two nic)
- hardware firewall
- SMTP mail
- SQL installed but not in use
- All SPs installed
- all client computers Win2000
- 1 XP laptop workstation
- 1 AS400 mainframe

All workstations were using Netscape mail client to send / receive mail via
POP3

I started configuring Outlook 2000 on one computer and Outlook XP on
another.

Everything worked for a few days, and now POP3 client can't retreive mail
any more:
I get this error every time a user tries to get mail:

Tipo evento: Errore
Origine evento: POP3SVC
Categoria evento: Modulo contenuto
ID evento: 1023
Data: 27/01/2004
Ora: 16.11.40
Utente: N/D
Computer: SERVER
Descrizione:
Errore 0x8004050a durante il rendering del messaggio 0001-0000000a0415 per
il download per l'utente p.billaud@sedpa.mc.

Per ulteriori informazioni, fare clic su
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
Dati:
0000: 50 04 14 00 P...

And Outlook clients keep "syncronizing" with Exchange server.

I have no idea on what to do.

I hope my description is clear enough and my english is good enough for you
to understand my situation.

Thanks,
Filippo

Sounds to me like you have configured the PC's to collect there email
directly from your ISP.
Normally you configure the server to collect the pop3 email from your ISP
and get exchange server to disribute it to your PC's.

Check to see if the Outlooks are configured to attach to the Exchange server
or directly to your ISP. Also re-run the ICW and make sure that POP3 is
selected, Also make sure the Firewall client is installed on the PC's you
want to collect directly from the ISP.

Personally I would configure the POP3 connector in Exchange to collect the
email from your ISP.

Hope this helps you!

Austin

Thanks for the quick answer Austin!

I am not using POP3Connector, instead I directly receive mail via SMTP.

the two outlook clients only have exchange service configured, no internet
mail.

Buona notte Filippo,

Your problem is really with the Netscape clients trying an external POP3
server? Do you have the firewall client installed? Check if you can "Telnet
pop3.externalserver.com 110" from the workstation.

Now... about those POP3SVC errors. Are you using the Exchange POP3 server
(not the POP3 connector) at all?

Ciao Javier,

actually my explanation wan not that good.

Netscape clients connect via POP3 to SBS, not to an external server.

So:

No POP3 Connector
Receiving mail to exchange via SMTP

Netscape clients download mail from SBS using POP3

(don't ask me why: boss decision, but I started installing outlook on to
PCs,
and hopefully I'll migrate all computer soon)

Filippo,

Using Exchange that way really sucks... you are missing half of the fun!

I really don't know about your issue... just make sure that you are not
using Outlook at the same time
(http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1023&source=POP3SVC has some
stuff there that applies to Oulook).

Re: URGENT! Exchange not working by Filippo

Thanks Merv / Javier,

I've already checked that article and it looked like that was not the case.

Anyway I rebooted (three times) and I don't have the problem any more.

Probably someone opened Outlook and Netscape at the same time
and created the problem (to all users) on pop3 server.

Thanks again for your help!

Filippo
