John is incorrect about the last portion.
You cannot run DC PROMO on and SBS server to demote it...won't work and =
if it did it would be a violation of the EULA and you'd still have the =
SBS version of the Win2k3 OS with its restrictions.
You must flatten the SBS box and re-installed with valid NON SBS =
media/license of your choice

Yes, you can install the Windows 2003 R2 Server in the SBS domain, =
promote=20
it to a DC and transfer the FSMO Roles. Install Integrated DNS on the =
R2=20
server and setup a zone transfer between SBS and R2. Make the new R2 =
server=20
a GC and transfer the FMSO roles using ntdsutil. Run DCPROMO on the =
SBS=20
server to demote it. Then from Add/Remove programs remove SBS from =
the SBS=20
server or just reinstall a new OS.
