I have an office environment running SBS 2000 along with two terminal
services servers: one server is a w2k box in application mode and the other
is a newly acquired w2003 box also running in application mode.

Everything works great. Yesterday, the boss asked me if we can change the
names on the terminal servers. It seems we have a print application (Encad)
that only runs on w2k machines and not win2003. So, with this in mind, the
boss would like me to move all our access databases on the w2k machine to
the new win2003 machine and change (swap) the names of the terminal servers.

My question is: Can I change the names on the terminal servers with
minimal problems? I think aside from changing the name, I'd have to update
the IP address within SBS2000 DNS table plus update any remote users who
are connecting via a name vs. an IP address to the appropriate terminal
server.

I am not a networking expert, so I told my boss the best thing to do at
the moment would be to not change the names on the terminal servers. And
that I'd try to find out if it is at all possible. Can someone point me in
the right direction?

Thank you,
Thomas J. kroljic

While I don't think there is much of a problem changing the name of the
machine (as long as is not a domain controller)... I'm unsure what you want
to acomplish in such procedure? In other words-> Why you want to change it?

Javier,
First, Thanks for responding. Second, in moving files (databases) from
one terminal server to another, the boss wants the name of the terminal
server to reflect the "usage" of that particular terminal server. Currently,
one server (TermServ) is used for the Access databases and the other
terminal server (QBserver) is used for an enterprise version of Quickbooks.
As I mentioned before, on the TermServ terminal server, there is an ENCAD
print program that seems to only work on W2k. When the ENCAD program is
running, it causes problems. It either slows down all open databases or does
not allow the user to open any forms. Since the databases on this terminal
server are heavily used, the boss would like to move then to the other
terminal server and move the Quickbooks application to the terminal server
that has the ENCAD program on it. And in the process, rename the servers if
possible.

Since we are running SBS 2000, the terminal servers are not DCs. Hopefully
I'm on the right path that if I change the name, I also have to do the
following: ensure that all remote terminal service programs point to the
correct Name or IP address, make any neccessary changes to the DNS records
in SBS2000. Not sure if I need to update anything related to VPN/Routing
services.

Thank you,
Thomas J. Kroljic

I think you are basically right and I don't see any problems changing the
servername. About the DNS... if you gave the server a static IP then I think
you would have to do the changes manually. If it was a DHCP reservation then
it should be done automatically.

Thanks for your help and advise. I'll probably make the name changes over
the weekend.

Thank you,

Is it possible to rename a domain controller running
SBS2000?

Byron Parsons

Not without almost reinstalling the whole server. In fact, if for some weird
reason I would have to do that... I would reinstall.
