Hi,
The tape unit needs to be replaced as it is getting old and tired. I need
to know if removable hard disk is a better solution than tape and if so what
type/brand/connection type.

I prefer tape backup. Others have different opinions. A usb hard drive
is a usb hard drive. My computer supplier gets the carrier for $35 and
we stick in whatever hard drive size we want. No need to buy a branded
carrier if you want to save a little money. 3 drives would be a good
number if you believe in always off site storage. One drive can often
hold a weeks worth of complete backups for some businesses. Other
businesses would eat up a 200 gig hard drive in 2 or 3 days.

USB2 is much faster than USB1x. If your motherboard supports USB2 then
good. Otherwise a less than 20 gig backup can take a few hours.

look on ebay for external DLT. 15/30 are cheap and 40/80 aren't going to
break the bank.
