        • Symantec Corp Edtion and Veritas To the BackupExec Users: I am noticing that since I installed Symantec's Corp Edition product, my backups have slowed down. Is there a setting or an exlusion that you recomend with Antivirus and Backup Exec? I remember in the old days with McAfee on Novell where you excluded scanning outgoing files and the backups went a lot faster. Thanks JohnJ Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120130

Since this jre has been installed, ISA prompts for username & password whenever you browse JAVA enabled pages. How can I prevent this? Best regards, Dennis. Could not ping the server. I was wondering if the DSL Pac Bell modem would be the issue. I don't have any experience with the PacBell modem. • DNS records for .local setup My server is server.workgroup.domain.local. My website is domin.com. Public external DNS servers host my www record that point to my external web host's site and a MX record that points to my SBS Exchange server. My users tell me that certain people from certain domains can't send them emails successfully. How do my DNS records and zones need to be configured to allow external email servers to find and resolve my mail server? Currently I have a forward lookup zone, workgroup.domain.local that has the SOA and host records for that zone. There is also a reverse lookup zone for my subnet. Do I need to add a forward lookup zone for domain.com and add host and MX records for my mail (SBS) server? Thanks :) Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120119

        • static I.P. and mailserver settings I just ordered a static i.p. for our SBS2000 machine. Now I am wondering, once we have the static i.p., and the MX record pointing to it, how do I set up Exchange to do the same job our ISP (POP3 mailserver) is presently doing ? Is there an "idiot's guide" to setting the machine up for that ? Thanks in advance. Chris Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120104

What is the best way to pickup files with a "Accessed Range" date e.g. 01-07-01 to 01-07-02. I tried using the search facility to pick these files up, but no joy. Any other bright ideas? • DCOM and EventID 10009 I've recently replaced a server and I'm now seeing complaints from a DCOM process claiming that it cannot contact the old server using any configured protocols and logging event ID 10009. This is being logged on the internal SBS server (not the replacement machine). Source is DCOM, category None, Event ID 10009, User is NT Authority\System, message cut-n-pasted below; DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer anubis using any of the configured protocols. I've had a go at finding and fixing this in the past which ultimately proved unsuccessful, but did eliminate a few lurking references to the old server name. These events are occuring once per minute for serveral hours and then stop for an seeminly abitrary period of time and then start again. (Of course they usually stop a few minutes after I get a fraction of time to look at the problem). I used filemon from sysinternals, and the process that *appears* to be related is emsmta.exe, access to emsmta is bracketting the entry that looks to be writing the event log. So Exchange is my most likely culprit, I've trawled through all the configuration/property panels that I can think of and can find no explicit reference to the old server name. It's causing any operational issues (that I know of) but it is filling the system event log and hence making spot real problems difficult. So, does anyone know of any trying to trap this DCOM call to see which process is invoking it ? Regards, Alan. Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120097

        • Instant Messaging I have finally implimented the instant messaging option in exchange in a new SBS installation. I am using the 4.7 messenger on the clients. I am having serious speed issues with it running. Everything else exchange related is running fine, adding a new contact in Messenger takes about 1 minute in which messenger appears to be locked up. When you click on somebody to send them a message it takes 5-10 seconds before you can type anything to them. Any ideas on how I can improve the performance of this feature? The server is running SBS2000 with the corresponding exchange. all the clients are XP pro. Thanks. Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120081

        • SBS 2003 OWA Premium I just installed SBS2003RC1 and most everything works great. Really like the new features. Only issue I can tell so far is when users log into the server and attempt to access OWA via Premium Client many of the features don't work. For example, when OWA Premium opens all the email is shown in the Inbox and a right-click shows a menu as expected, but when you choose open from the menu or double-click nothing happens. Is is just RC1 or am I missing something? All in all SBS2003 is a MAJOR improvement in look and feel. The intranet capabilities are awesome. Can't wait for the final release. Thanks! • easy money Yo,this aint phony. I am an 18 year old DJ that needs loot. Yo, im tellin ya...you read this already about that fast monry making shit. Well, to tell you the truth it works. The figures are a little bit off, but i made money. I got 15 bucks the first week, then this week i made $45. That is frickin $60 bucks doin nuttin. Well, soon im gonna get some new tables. EVERYONE try this. Im spreadin the wealth. AT LEAST TRY IT. Im a ghetto ass who lives in Chicago with no income what so ever. IM LIVING PROOF. LATER. ========================================================== (this shit is long, but it will pay off, on the real!===========================================================A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought," Yeah, right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right? Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works....also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope to prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service by this. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: #1) A. Montalvo 711 Park Ave Lakewood, NJ 08701 #2) RANDY PAGUIO 40029 CANDY APPLE WAY MURRIETA CA.92562 #3) Ethan Camba 832 Monterey Rd. Glendale Ca. 91206 #4)Jovim Ventura 5818 N Christiana Chicago,IL 60659 #5)G. Wheeler 44 West River St. Upton , MA 01568 #6) Carlos Mendez 2115 GUILFORD RD 304 HYATTSVILLE, MD 20783 STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. If you do not live in the us or there is a foreign address you must put a international stamp on your envelopes. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make!---DIRECTIONS -----HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS------------ Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this letter, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computers memory. Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list. Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a ..txt file. If you want to do your postings in different sittings, you'll always have this file to go back to. Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroupes and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With a original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is, do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play FAIRLY please! This ensures a huge circle of wealth that grows with the internet audience!!! Everyone benefits!!! Remember to send the six envelopes to the above addresses, in order to create the legal service. At first I was to scared to try this but I researched it and its totally legal. If you send the six envelopes out, you create a service, a legal service. The Internet audience is expanding all the time. The audience is like a equity stock on the stock market, continuously going up. Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120043

        • OT: Breaking Passwords This is from Woody's Windows Watch newsletter: Fast Cracking Windows XP Passwords No doubt you've read about the researchers who found a way to crack Windows passwords at a breathtaking rate. CNET's Robert Lemos ran the original story last week. I've seen the results mangled by the press in several places, so permit me to recap. Philippe Oechslin at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne refined a very fast method for cracking certain kinds of alphanumeric passwords. His method works by using two CD's worth of data to help speed up the cracking calculations: by using what amount to pre-digested calculations, his new method runs rings around earlier crackers. Windows passwords are particularly vulnerable to this pre-digesting trick because Windows always encodes passwords the same way, on any PC. That isn't news to anyone who understands the details of Windows'password encryption technique, but it permitted Dr. Oechslin to come up with a whole bunch of pre-digested (portions of) passwords that will work on any PC. Worth noting: Linux "salts" each password, so the encoding comes up different on different machines. That makes it impossible to come up with this kind of pre-digested list. Luca Wullschleger and Claude Hochreutiner, also at EPFL, wrote a program and a Web interface http://lasecpc13.epfl.ch/ntcrack/ to show just how well Dr. Oechslin's method works. As we went to press, the demo program cracked about half of the passwords that people fed into it. On average, it took 7.7 seconds to crack each one. (My 12-character test password was cracked in less than three seconds.) The demo was so popular that Luca and Claude pulled it from the Web site - 1,000,000 hits in a week. At this moment, Dr. Oechslin's program only works with alphanumeric passwords - if you use punctuation marks (as I strongly recommend in my books), your chances of being cracked quickly go down significantly. For now. But it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a big collection of pre-digested passwords that include punctuation marks - assuming it hasn't been done already. This isn't a gaping security hole in Windows. In order to reconstitute the original password, you have to be able to get at the encrypted version of the password, and that (generally) isn't easy - anyone who can get at the encrypted version of the password can get at your data anyway, and they can decrypt the data at leisure. But it should serve as a wake-up call. Windows passwords aren't ultra-secure. They can be broken - with ease, in some cases. You can make a potential breaker's job considerably more difficult by putting punctuation marks in your passwords. If you need very strong security, Windows logon passwords just don't cut the mustard. -kw Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 120001

        • Sending email I am currently running sbs 2K on a single machine and have installed exchange server and ISA server. I was able to send and receive email through exchange but not with ISA filter packets enabled. I got help through this forum and used internet connection wizard to get things set. If I send from the ISA server it goes out fine. When I send from a client machine I get the following error message. Task 'pop.earthlink.net - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or ISP. • website and DNS issues I currently have a SBS setup as follows: I have a registered domain name mydomain.com and I am running IIS on the server so that internet users can access their email through OWA. There is a third party web hosting provider that is hosting the main web site. Here is the problem, whenever internal users try to access the main website, they cannot. Either ISA, or DNS is not allowing them to see it. I am guessing the when the server processes the request, it is thinking it is the www.mydomain.com when there is nothing hosted locally execpt OWA. • ntbackup.exe command line won't backup Exchange In SBS 2000 I've created a backup set using the Backup Wizard, selecting backup everything on the local computer. I saved the resulting selections to a job, and created a batch file to execute the backup. The selections include everything on drives C: and D: along with everything on drive M: (exchange) and System State. When launched from the batch file, C:, D: and System State get backed up and verified, but M: is totally ignored. The exchange database and log files are skipped during the backup of D:, as they are in use. Can this be fixed, or do I have to use sequential ntbackup commands for c:\ d:\ /DS /IS and systsmestate? • Network Infrastructure - Please help I am setting up a Small Business Server 2000 network for a small business primarily to host SQL Server and Exchange, in addition to serving as a domain controller. I am using SBS because of the reduced cost of the bundled packages for a network that will have few users. In addition to the SBS server I will have a web server sitting as a standalone server in a DMZ (while the web server is available to the public, it will only be used to contact the database by internal employees). I would also like to set up a test server which will need IIS and SQL Server. I know that SBS must run as the root domain controller and no more than one instance of SBS can run in the same network, however it is cheaper for me to use another edition of SBS for the test server instead of purchasing Win2K Server and SQL Server 2000 separately. I would also like to use SBS so the test environment mimics as closely as possible the production environment. I would like some recommendations on whether this is the best way to implement or if running two different domains for test and production will cause too many headaches. Any help is appreciated. • OT- Bare Metal Recovery I am looking for advice/recommendation for solutions that would allow for a server to be recovered as quickly as possible. I have a customer who will be purchasing two W2k servers. The second is strictly for backup purposes. Both will be identical and contain 4 18gig SCSI Raid 5 arrays. Worst case scenario is the main server is completely destroyed! He wants to take the backup and "restore" from his external tape drive. He will already have W2k installed on the backup. I see several problems with this scenario: 1. If the original server is completely destroyed then it is likely the tape drive will also be destroyed. This can be remedied by purchasing a second tape drive. 2. Doing a file/file restore onto a blank W2k box may not bring the system into a recoverable state because of the SFN/LFN issues. Also, presumably the backup may not be at the same service pack level etc as the primary server. This could be remedied by using some sort of imaging software and tape restore combination. Any recommendations on this setup? How about using Veritas Bare Metal Restore Option? Any comments? How about using Powerquest's V2i software? or Sunbelt's Double-Take software? Comments. Thanks, John Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119926

        • ISA blocks ipass update: UDP 67, 68 and 137. Hi, We use a service that is called iPass and allows us to connect to the internet from anywhere in the world. When users connect to our LAN they can update the POP's and the software if there is an update. However, ISA blocks that. Currently there is a 4.2 MB update (new version) and that is very anoying for travellers to update on a 56K modem connection (usually getting 25K or so)... Please find below the ISALogs... I'm unable to understand this: the IPPD log seems to have a problem with UDP ports 67, 68 and 137. I noticed these same ports in the log when I tried to use Netscape from inside our network and when I tried to setup FTP from outside to inside... What is it with these ports? Do I have some weird NAT config? Please help!!! • NT Backup Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me. I have recently given up using Vertas Backup Exec 8.6 on my SBS2000 server, since when ever I run a backup it just seats there queued. I have been trying NT Backup and it it seem to work fine. I am running an 8 DDS4 autoloader. Currently I have to deallocate and prepare tapes by hand in the removeable storage MMC. Is there any way I can automate this so when I go on holiday for example I can just get someone to load a tape for me. Many Thanks in advance. • OT (?) - problems browsing with IE6 Don't know if it's off topic or not, but I'm getting odd behaviour on a client PC in Internet Explorer 6, when right-clicking on a link and selecting "Open Link in New Window". Initially, there are no problems, but after a while when I follow the same procedure, the new window opens up, shows nothing and eventually times out with "cannot find server or DNS error". On the other hand, if I first open a new IE window and paste the link into the address bar, the page always opens just fine. Tried this on another workstation, didn't experience the same problem. On the problem workstation, newsgroup browsing with OE is problem-free, and pinging the URL's shows no problems. Client is Win2K with SP4, using Firewall client and SecureNAT connection through ISA server. Can anybody point me in the right direction here - should I be looking at an IE setting, an ISA setting, a firewall client setting, or something else? Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119909

        • Detect port scan Hi, I've just been checking in a spare moment (rare) and doing a port scan of my server from the outside. I can see in the ISA logs that ISA is blocking all the probes, but I thought I had set ISA to report such a port scan to me through email and the event log, but this is not happening. What do I need to do to set this up? eg tp get emails showing a port scan has occurred. Keith Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119905

        • SBS Fax Service - UK-available compatible modem Wondering if anyone can help. We install SBS 2000 for clients, and have numerous problems configuring the SBS Fax service and it appears pretty unstable once configured. Reading through various newsgroups, it appears that the problem can be fixed with a modem on the hardware compatibility list. My challenge though is sourcing a make/model for the UK, within the budget of a typical small business, that is on the hardware compatibility list. I have really struggled to identify one from the list, and would appreciate a recommendation of one that works - especially grateful if you can supply manufacturer name, model number and if you have it a link to their site. Thanks in advance. Ian Denny Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119898

        • Exmerge Question I have an SBS4.5 Server, just bought a new server and installed SBS2000. We are going to build a whole new domain, pretty much start from scratch. We are going to use EXMERGE to backup the old emails from the 4.5 domain. Then we are going to use Exmerge to import those to our new domain. Here's the question. On the 4.5 domain the usernames on the network (and mailboxes) were the users first name only, on the new domain we are going to first initial last name usernames. I have never run Exmerge but I want to make sure that I will be able to map the old mailboxes to the right new accounts. Any advice? Thanks! Douglas Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119891

There are using the Linksys VPN Router to connect these two computers(network). The client computers on the site on Win2000 server will not be abled to access the files whatever that is located in SBS side or Local Side. (i think that is the security problem.) • Outlook/Exchange query hi all we have a confusing problem with Outlook/Exchange. emails are all working correctly internally and externally. exchange backups all fine etc etc. only problem is email previewing or opening of emails seems to be very SLOW. ie too slow we have just upgraded with HP proliant ml350 + 9 HP D530 ultraslims so it should be a heck of a lot faster. to confuse things we have looked more closely and founfd that the previewing of emails is only an issue with internal emails. ie if we send an email from our office to theirs the process works fine. if they send one from one staff memeber to the next it seems to take ages. v.odd - have checked name resolution for eny DNS mishaps but all seems correct. tia Jeremy when the client sets up we just upgraded the whole network and then discovered the network switch was in fact a 16 port hub. Recently my server logs have shown entries like below: 2003-07-30 00:51:58 10.0.0.32 - 10.0.0.2 80 OPTIONS / - 200 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:51:58 10.0.0.32 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /sysvol - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:05 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 OPTIONS / - 200 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:05 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /sysvol - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:14 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 OPTIONS / - 200 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:14 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /NETLOGON - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:14 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /users - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:19 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /Clients - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:19 10.0.0.13 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /clientapps5 - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:31 10.0.0.17 - 10.0.0.2 80 OPTIONS / - 200 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:31 10.0.0.17 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /NETLOGON - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:33 10.0.0.17 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /Users - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:37 10.0.0.17 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /Clients - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 2003-07-30 00:52:37 10.0.0.17 - 10.0.0.2 80 PROPFIND /clientapps5 - 404 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600 Can anybody give me some clue as to why the clients would be using port 80 for logon requests? I assume this is what the logs are showing. Thanks Darren Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119835

        • GPO on member TS I am setting up a Win2K terminal server member to a SBS2K domain. On the TS, we will need to have a few different groups created. Some of the users will need access to run certain applications, while others not. I have followed KB263070, but when I attempt to click on the Group Policy Tab I recieve the error "The Domain controller for Group Policy operations is not available. You may cancel this ioeratn for this session or retry using one of the following domain controller choices: The one with the Operations Master token for the PDC emulator The one used by the Active Directory Snap-ins Use any available domain controller. I have tried all three options to no avail. Any suggestions? Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119829

        • How do I install FTP server on an existing SBS 2000? We have had a SBS 2000 running for two months now and now they want to run FTP on the server in spite of the security issues. Does anybody have any resources as to how I install this on the existing server? Thank you, Steve Tag: TEST MESSAGE---PLEASE IGNORE Tag: 119806
