I am running SBS2000 SP3, I was in the process of upgrading to SP4 when the server crashed. The system now does not boot, it gets stuck at the 'applying computer settings' stage. I have rebooted into safe mode and reapplied SP3, this however has not resolved the problem

I have succesfully rebooted the SBS2000 server in directory repair mode. The server is configured with 2 NIC's, Internal network and External (Internet). The internal is configure with no default gateway and the primary DNS is pointing at the internal network address. The external NIC is configured with the default gateway pointing at the router and the primary DNS pointing at the internal NIC address (as per microsoft documentation). I have checked the binding order, internal NIC followed by external NIC. However, I am unable to run the ICW (during directory repair mode). When I reboot the server it still hangs during the 'applying computer settings' phase. Its now 7:30am local time, I have been on site through the night ! The users are due to arrive at 8:30amm ! Obviously I require URGENT assistance ! Any help would be greatfuly received

Unplug the rj45 from the wall and let it reboot without contacting the
Internet...

Hi Susan

Thanks for getting back to me. The server has been booted past the 'applying computer settings' (after 4 hours !), I've managed to logon and its currently reached the 'loading personal settings' stage - what progress ! I am loathed to switch off the server now, can't stand the thought of waiting another 4 hours to get to logon. Is it worth disconnecting the Internet NIC at this stage ? Do you have any suggestions of what I should do, I plan to rerun the ICW and recheck DNS settings

Thanks for your help

Jeff

System still sat @ 'loading your personal settings', it has been there for 5 and a half hours ! What the hell is it doing

Any help at all with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

If you live in the USA call Microsoft using one of your 2 free calls.
This assumes you have a retail or open license version of SBS.

Hi Jim, we are located in the UK. It's an OEM version of the OS. Any more ideas ?

disconnect from the internet and restart with any (1 or 2) interfaces
connected to a switch. Use directory services restore mode. Ensure your
network interfaces are correct and check the binding order. Restart
normally, I hope to hear back from you inside a couple of hours.

It's possible that an earlier long reboot has mucked up the service
dependencies. If you can get into DSRM grab a piece of paper and draw out
the depenencies of all services. We may have something circular happening.

I would have called PSS several hours ago.

Hi SuperGumby

I rebooted the server into directory service mode last night. I have checked the settings for each of the Cards. The internal NIC is set with no default gateway, the primary DNS address is set to the IP address of the NIC, WINS is also set to this address.

The 2nd NIC (Internet) has the default gateway set to the address of the router it also uses the address of the internal adapter for primary DNS. WINS is diabled for this card, only the TCP/IP service is bound to it. I have checked the binding order - Internal then External then remote. The DNS forwarders have been set with the address of the DNS ISP Servers

I am at a total loss as to why it is taking so long to boot in normal mode. Users are able to access the server shares and their files are intact and accessbile. I was thinking of rebooting the Server with the Windows 2000 install disc (SBS Disk 1) and maybe selecting the repait option. What do you think ? I have already reapplied SP3, this completed succesfully but failed to resolve the problem. Hope to hear from you soon.

Call PSS before you muck any further. A US$245 is worth it IMHO.

After booting into directory recovery mode and checking all the network settings I reinstalled SP4. Guess what ? System rebooted perfectly ! Thanks you all for replying.
