    - shot in the dark - routing issues Hi, I we are running SBS2000. We are building an application which will connect to a 3rd party vendor via a private point-to-point frame relay connection. Our internal SBS network is on the 192.168.16.0 subnet and the private network is on the 192.168.64.0 subnet. We have a webserver which will recieve requests, contact the private server, get a response and send it back to the client. The webserver has an IP on the internal and private network (it essentially is straddling both networks). I have added a static route on the webserver sending all requests for a certain IP to the private network. >>route add xxx.xxx.xxx.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.64.1 From the webserver, I can successfully ping the private 3rd party server via our private network (tracert goes through the private gateway). When I run the tcpClient app (called from the webserver), it tries to connect via the internal gateway (with the static route, it should be using the private gateway). Why would pinging route properly but the client not? Is there something I need to do at the SBServer level to force all requests for the private network to the private gateway?     - SBS Terminals Svcs / 2000 v 2003 I read over and over that using Term Svcs (Remote Admin) to runn app's (mostly Office apps in my case) is not a good idea. I work 50-50 out of 2 locations and need to consolidate data/email that is now duplicated between stand-alone desktops at each location. Friend of mine uses SBS/TS to run app's and thinks it's the most efficient way to do this - since only screen data goes across the net. I sometimes work with large ACCESS databases, etc. that would pump a lot of data. TS wouldn't be used by anyone besides myself. How bad an idea is it really? I'm installing SBS 2000 after procrastinating for 2 years - should I really be installing 2003, or should I get 2000 working and upgrade when I need it Many thanks.     - Client Win Auto Upd not working The workstations in the domain behind the ISA server are unable to get Windows Automatic Updates when scheduled at 3am. The error on the workstation is: Event Type: Warning Event Source: Automatic Updates Event Category: Download Event ID: 16 Date: 5/21/2004 Time: 8:14:31 AM User: N/A Computer: TBDN30 Description: Unable to connect: Windows is unable to connect to the Automatic Updates service and therefore cannot download and install updates according to the set schedule. Windows will continue to try to establish a connection. I have checked and applied (if applicable) the following: Q241783 , Q312955 , Q328010 , Q824208 , Q830750 I have made sure WPAD is in DNS. I have opened 443 on the ISA server using a packet filter. Workstations fail regardless if they are using the WSP Firewall Client or not. All use the IP address of the ISA server as the proxy server, port 8080. I've posted here before with no replies, so I hope this is enough information to start.     - VPN Solution suggestions I actually have two questions. The first is dealing with SBS2K and WinGate. Is this a good solution for a VPN or is their something better? My next question has to do with SBS2K3 with 1 NIC setup and a Linksys BEFVP41 VPN router. Do I just setup the router and allow access to the LAN or do I have to setup anything in SBS2K3? I figure that ISA Server won't be a problem since I'm using the 1 NIC setup. All recommendations are welcome, however, I must add that the 1 NIC setup was the work of another consultant who setup the wiring closet in such a way that I cannot safely or even neatly implement a 2 NIC setup.     - Problem with lsass.exe Error status 0xc00002e1 I've tried this solutions http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;258007 but the only thing that told me is my Database : C:\windows\ntds\ntds.dit is empy... as in 0 kbs How do I fix this? I've been playing with the NTDSUTIL but nothing seems to be helping. I haven't really even done anything with the server yet, as I've been waiting for a good time to switch over, so if I have to reinstall not a big deal. Why would this happen though??     - VPN error 800 I think that one of the MS hotfixes has whacked the VPN setup, and is causing Error 800. Today, I was at a client site that I haven't been to in about a month, and did all the MS hotfixes and updates in that time period. I just tried to VPN in remotely to that site, and I get Error 800. The VPN to this site has been absolutely flawless to this point. This happened at another client site previously - same symptoms.     - Webmail access issue Help Plz, I have a few user accounts that are unable to log on to their webmail accounts internally and externally, other users are fine and able to. It always replys with "You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Ensure that your user name and password are correct, and then try again."     - Users on slow connections + private contacts in OWA Hi, SBS2K W2K + WinXP Outlook2000 (+ Outlook XP) 1) I've been trying to figure out how to setup users on slow connections. Users are using VPN to connect to the Exchange-server, but some are having problems because of the rather small connection they're using. So I was hoping to set up the users to use "Offline-mode" and then synchronise once in a while, (probably every 5 min - which should happend in the background and thereby not "lock" Outlook when opening rather large emails). But... At the same time users have the need to access each others calendars, which is not possible in off-line mode. Or am I wrong? What I'm ideally looking for is having all mail synchronised to a local copy on the client but at the same time keeping the option to watch others calendars. Local mail but online calendar. Is this possible or are there alternatives (of course besides looking at the bandwidth)? 2) When you create a new email in Outlook, one can press "To:" and get access to GAL *and* Contacts.     - Client Internet Connection Problem Client workstation on a new SBS 2003 domain. Workstation is using WinXP with SP1, IE 6 with all patches and updates and Outlook 2003. Also is running Norton AV Corp 8.1 and regular Adaware scans w/proper updates of course. When the user tries to access the Internet using IE, she will get the error "DNS/page cannot be found". This happens more times than not. If she clicks refresh, the page will display. This is apparently happening only on this PC (there are 11 others). This did not happen with the prior workgroup setup, only since the SBS conversion. It seems to be a DNS type error but since all PCs are setup with DHCP to populate the settings, I would think that would be ruled out especially since this appears to be the only PC affected.     - Terminal server issue, etc .. etc.. Hello all, I hope this isnt a repost, as I got an error for the 1st posting of this message. 1. I have installed terminal services on my SBS2000 server for remote administration purposes, running ISA, Exchange, DNS etc ... The terminal services were running great on day one, on day two I could not use the SBS2000 admin console properly. I can not see any users or do any changes to it. 2. I have a VERY annoying item in my application log that keeps coming up as: Source: Userenv Category: None Event ID: 1000 User: NT authority\System Computer: My SBS2000 server Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1326). I have looked this sucker up online and all articles I find do not make sense to me. 3.     - Exchange mailbox rule problem Hello there. I'm having a problem with an automatic rule which I have created in the Outlook 2002 rules wizard. We have Symantec Filtering for Exchange and also Symantec Anti Virus for SMTP gateways installed on our SBS 2000. The email notification messages that are automatically generated by the anti virus system when a virus is detected in incoming email messages have become a real hinderance. We started to try to move these notification messages out of the users inboxes by creating a rule to pick out any message with "quarantined attachment" in the message header and move it to a secondary email folder in the mailboxes' inbox. The strange thing is that this method works fine when you opt to "run the rule now" manually but it fails to move these messages automatically. If any other criteria for re-directing messages is used it works fine too. I have tried creating a message using my webmail account and attaching a text file called quarantined attachment.txt. This puts the relavent text into the message header. When these messages arrive in my users mailboxes the rule works automatically. Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour with Outlook 2002 / Exchange Server 2000? Has anyone got any ideas how I can work around this problem? Thanks very Much, Shane Molloy. UK.     - SBS2000 Upgrade options????? We currently have a client running SBS2000 with approx 45 users. The company is just about to expand by another 40 users this will push us over the thershold for SBS2000 and SBS2003. I am interested in the upgrade options available. I have been trawling the microsoft website for dirrerent options but drawn a couple of blanks so thought I would turn to the masses for advice. 1. I Understand a small business server is not going to be an option and I am going to have to move to server plus exchange. 2. Microsoft offered the SBS2000 Migration Pack, which to my understanding was to help move from SBS to seperates. But to my understanding this has now been discontinued and replaced by the SBS2003 Transition Pack. Now will the SBS2003 transition pack get me from SBS2000 to Server 2003 seperates or do you have to upgrade to SBS2003 which is a pointless exercise as our clients will be too big for this. The CAL's on the SBS2000 are OEM and there for dont have software assurance so also I belive these cannot be used in conjunction with SBS2003. What is going to be the cheapest option for the upgrade?     - Migrate mailboxes SBS2000 to Exchange 2003 Standard Have client currently running SBS2000. Want to migrate to straight Windows 2003 environment. Aiming to exceed 75 users and have separate servers for SQL and Exchange. My question is regarding the best way to migrate the users mailboxes from the SBS2000 Exchange to standard Exchange 2003. Would we: 1. Use AD Migration Tool? 2. Use Move mailbox tool in AD Users and Computers? 3. Exmerge to PST. Reimport to new mailbox? Ideally I would like to minimise downtime and get as much setup of the new servers done offsite beforehand. As such I was thinking of creating a new domain and migrating the data across. However searching the newsgroups the prevaling approach would seem to be put the new servers into the existing SBS2000 domain and transfer FMSO and Global Catalog. Then turn off the SBS.     - SBS2003 +Outlook2003 Rules not working Has anyone had a problem with relaying email to an external pop account (which my PDA accesses) using a rule in outlook. Although the rule appears to work i.e. when the rule is run manually the mail appears in the sent items, it is not received in the external pop account.     - SBS 2003 - Fault Tolerance I have an issue with a server running SBS2003 std edition, and wonder if anyone has any constructive advice: The server is in use and developed a physical problem with hard drive number 1, (a 3 partitioned system mirror drive) I replaced this drive and attempted to re-build the mirror from the default operating system drive number 0, it re- built 2 out of 3, but failed to mirror the actual operating system partition. Further investigation showed the existing drive number 0, to contain a bad block, presumably preventing the re-sync. The most recent and now only complete system backup also failed, rendering it useless, which is what alerted me to the condition. Can anyone see a way for me to now replace the existing drive 0 and restore the system back to a fault tolerant condition without having to resort to a complete operating system re-install.     - SBS 2000 SMTP Connector to smarthost and back We have a SBS 2K with Exchange and are using its POP3 Connector to download our email from our ISP and route to the relevant mailbox/user. We have recently bought GFI MailSecurity and MailEssentials in an attempt to filter out spam and viruses and prevent them from ever reaching our users. In order to do this, i need to install GFI MailSecurity on a different server to our SBS/Exchange and have it act as a smarthost and be the first machine to receive our email from our ISP. I have managed to setup a different server as a smarthost, but i'm wondering how i go about initially fetching our ISP email to our relay server in order for MailSec to do its work? In the GFI manual (available at http://support.gfi.com/manuals/en/msec8/msec8manual-1-21.html) it says about setting up an SMTP Connector and pointing the MX record of our domain to the mail relay server. If i setup an SMTP Connector on our SBS Exchange server, will this result in it downloading our ISP email via its POP3 connector and then forward it to our relay server and eventually be bounced back to our Exchange server (via the fact i've set it up as a smarthost in its IIS SMTP settings). I'm concerned that it might cause an infinite loop, and emails will just bounce between the two and i'm not sure how or even if i need to change our DNS MX record.     - Changing IP Reservations in SBS 2000 Hi there We currently run only ONE server which is DC (AD-Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS, WINS, Print, Application, File, BackupServer etc) We currently use 10.0.0.x range for our intranet purposes. I want to change the IP addressing pool from 10.0.p.q range to 10.0.r.s. This is because the octect that is reserved for the server (main Server which is DHCP, DNS, DC, IIS and Print server) is 10.0.0.1. And i'm not comfortable with this IP address for security reasons as it is the first octect in the 10.0.0.x block and anyone (a potential hacker can have his first guess corrrect) I was wondering if i can change the IP address for the server to say 10.0.230.20 and change the name of the server from say bingo to complexBingo and then update any references to the old server name from client machines to new one (any shortcuts to \\bingo to \\complexBingo for example) would be enough???     - More than 50 users - SBS 2000 Exactly what happens when you exceed the maximum number of users supported by SBS? We are currently running SBS 2000 and I think we are over the limit. However, everyone seems to be able to login and there doesnt' seem to be any problems. We actually have only 45 licenses. Please don't post you "opinion" of what you think should happen.     - Upgrading to SBS2003 I am wanting to upgrade our SBS2000 server to SBS2003 (software assurance). I would like to completely low away the 'C' drive on the server and start from scratch.     - 403 FORBIDDEN THE PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED SBS2000 1) Just moved to a new DSL provider. Configured new DSL modem to reflect same IP setting as old unit. 2) Every time some one opens IE , they get "The page cannot be displayed" message. Press refresh and the home page comes up.     - Internal Instant messaging I'm looking to set up instant messaging for use within my LAN only... no internet connectivity... local server..     - Printer going Off Line by itself I have a Toshiba EStudio810 series digital photocopier that is setup to print via our small business server. I've set it up as shared and added it to the printers available to all pc's and all test prints were successful. Permissions have been set up correctly too. The printer keeps going offline !!! I've checked the event log and there doesn't appear to be anything to suggest why this is happening. The printer port is setup properly on a local TCP/IP and tests from the server work fine too. This one is really bugging me as I have to keep resetting the printer before I can get it to work again which is no good for my users. Any help would be appreciated.     - SBS RAS connexion blocked!? I have a SBS with RRAS - I configured a persistent connexion wich works fine except that from time to time it stops to work (I think) - because I try to ping and to connect to it when the connection starts, and after a period of no tranfer on it I try again to ping and to connect - and is not working! Customer would like to support a conference room with a seperate IP network address from the regular internal LAN address, and only let that LAN acquire DHCP addresses for internet access only. No access to the internal LAN. Conference room would have a hub allowing multiple connections. SBS2000 internal lan: 192.168.11.x conference room lan: 172.16.11.x (for example) SBS 2000 server has 2 NICs, currently one is diabled. SBS 2000 server is connected to a hardware router for internet access. Question: Should I be able to create a second scope in DHCP, assign a fixed IP to the 2nd NIC (conference room connection), and have SBS2000 route traffic from the conference room to the internet? Any pointers to how to set this up would be appreciated. Not sure if I should use ISA or Routing and Remote Access. With both NICs having private addresses I believe ISA is not in the picture. Right?     - Setting up SBS 2000 w/SonicWall Firewall VPN, Need help. Hello All, Thanks again to Marina Roos SBS-MVP for helping me figure out my exchange 2000 dilema. We recently purchased sonicwall firewall SOHO3 10 user w/ 5 VPN connections. Here is scenerio, I'm at home using DSL connection. I install Sonicwalls VPN software, input user, password, IP, etc., and presto! I now have a secure pipe from my home to the sonicwall firewall at work...thats it. I can get to my firewall, woopty doo. What now? How do I get files off of the server? My objective is for regular users, not just admin to be able to access files from home. I'm not looking to do remote desktop, just something like ftp, very simple. I'm not sure what to do or where to start, I've heard that NATing may be a problem because its not incorporated into server2000's TCP/IP stack. I need to see this through. I do have tech support for the Sonicwall firewall, but it seems like they will only help me get from home to the firewall.     - SBS as time server I have 2 networks: first - SBS 2k - domain controller second - 2 servers win2K . The win2k server is time syncronized with an external source (GPS clock). I want to syncronize now the other servers with the SBS. How can I do that? I tried the net time / setsntp: ip_of_SBS but it's not working.     - SOT: Virus notifications. Has anybody proposed a movement to establish NOT ENABLING EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS OF INFECTION TO SENDERS as a 'best practice'? I for one am fed up to my ears of dealing with explaining and re-explaining to users that WE didn't send any viruses out. I think it has been pretty well established that during a major outbreak these 'friendly' notifications do little more than help clog up the already taxed internet, and since 100% of the notifications I have received are due to spoofed addresses, they are literally pointless and a waste of resources. Now I'm sure I could set up some form of filter that I'd have to tweak for the rest of my life to just drop these types of messages, but I would like to see "Disable email notification to sender" as a documented Best Practice. I am currently using one modem with good results but we are only sending. We would like to start receiving via the Faxserver to reduce costs and improve routing.     - Encoding in email I have users who send attachments to clients. The clients edit the attachment and send back. When we receive the email, we do not get the attachment, but we get a large email with a bunch of "garbage" at the bottom. My guess is that the "garbage" is the encoding of the attachment.     - ISA Server not allowing website traffic I am getting a 403 error when trying to access my website.. I have looked through the ISA server settings, they are all default, my ISP settings are the same as they always have been, my static ip is set, everything is working but I cannot access my website. I have tried resetting the permissions on the actual directory, I have tried resetting the permissions through IIS, I have reset my ICW settings, I cant seem to get through to the server.. What gives? This has happened ever since I setup VPN on the server.. Anyone have any ideas? My website addy is www.scottsdaleautobody.com if anyone cares to see the actual message. Please help!     - Any help with this would be greatly appreciated Hello Dana. I finally got some information. It looks like the VPN connection is still active when this happens. Also, when it happens, we tried pinging three things: The static ip address of the server - Gives 4 replies with nothing lost The static ip address with 3389 on the end of it - Gives bad parameter The servers local nic address 10.0.0.1 - Gives a loss of data The servername - Gives could not find server xxxxx Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.     - Exchange e-mail problem Hi all, I posted this earlier under the title badmail which was probably off putting. We are having a problem receiving e-mail fron a specific sender. All e-mails from this sender are coming through to Exchange which then treats them as spam and puts them in the Badmail folder. The sender has no problems sending anywhere else, they are virus free and I cannot figure out why our server is treating them as spam. SBS2k sp1 and e2k sp3 are installed and OWA is utilised.
