How many CAL users can log on?
I know this is a simple question, but after considering the issues that is
happening to my client, I was wondering... he has seven (7) PC's logging onto
the network at the same time.
I am wondering if perhaps this is the reason for his problems as to why the
network constantly crashes when accessing applications?
Or is it still simply the fact that a DHCP server has to be installed? Tag: Software and e-books available Tag: 180295
Configuring SBS 2000 for NAT.
I have a client who is presently using SBS 2000, and is having constant
problems with network connections. Here's what is happening. First, from
time to time he loses connections and has to restart all of his workstations,
and even the server to get he connections back.
(History)
Now, it was setup by somebody else over 5 years ago. Recently, I rebulit him
a new server and loaded back his operating system into it, to get him
running. Except, his network is static IP's with internet through the same
LAN adapter.
What I like to do for him, to solve his problem, is to attach his second LAN
adapter with a router, for the internet, either DHCP or static using NAT.
Then, using a HUB attach all of his computers to the second LAN adater and
configure it to log in each workstation statically. This way, he will not
have these issues again!
Is this a better choice, or is there something else as to why he is having
all of these problems.
What he has, is a DSL modem attached to a wired router, along with all his
clients, and they are seeing the server and logging in and seeing the
internet too.
Please advise if NAT is a good suggestion, I believe he is logging into a
Domain controller... not sure, but can find out.
I appreciate any feedback on this topic! Tag: Software and e-books available Tag: 180284
Upgrading Small Bus server...
We are looking at upgrading our Small Bus server from 2000 to the most
recent version which I think is still 2003 correct? The issue we are
currently facing is that I am wondering if I should just ditch SBS 2000
completley and go with the purchase of stand alone products (i.e. separate
Server (domain controller) , separate SQL Server, separate Exchange server)
and leave SBS as it is or to upgrade our current SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. I am
thinking it will most likley be the cheapest and easiest for us to upgrade
from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 (or later) - however, we really only want the
newer versions of Exchange and SQL server - specifically Exchange at this
point - and it might be nice to move right up to Exchange 2008 instead of
stopping at 2003. However, that may also entail some hardware upgrades (or
new server to purchase) if we do that...
Does anyone have any idea on cost to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 to do
something like this and maybe some technical details of SBS 2003 ie. # of
concurrent users, max email database size (Exchange 2000 is 16gb - which we
have already hit before)? I suspect this type of an upgrade will most likely
be quite a job. Does anyone have any information to offer on this type of a
venture?

Microsoft Mobile Information Server question...
We have several sales people who have hand held devices that can synch with
Exchange using ActiveSynch. However, we have Exchange 2000 (becasue we have
SBS 2000) and ActiveSynch is not part of that. I have heard that the product
mentioned in the subject line would allow this type of functionality if
installed. My question is, 1) Is this server software free now that
ActiveSynch has basically replaced it in more recent Exchange versions and
2) Can it also be run on the Small Bus Server - or should it be moved off to
its own server completely?
We are looking at upgrading to a more recent version of Exchange but money
is tight and we may not be able to do this for a long time.
Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Hi there,
I'm looking at upgrading from SBS 2000 OEM to SBS 2003. Can OEM even be

Roaming profile issue...
I have a roaming profile issue that I would like some clarification on...
I recently set up a new user and forgot to enter the path to the roaming
profile in his AD profile before logging him into one of our XP machines he
will be using for the first time. While I was logged on I proceeded to
configure his desktop the way he needs and when I finished, I remembered
that I had forgotten to set up the roaming part of his profile. So before
logging him out, I added the path to his ropaming profile in his AD profile,
saved it, and then logged him out of the XP machine.
I then went over to a differnt XP machine and logged him in to test, and
behold, the desktop changes I had made on the previous login were all
there - so I knew the roaming profile was working. I did not have to
configure any printers on his profile as the various network printers he
needed were already installed on that PC and as such existed in his profile
of the PC he was logged onto.
Now this is where it gets tricky... Yesterday he had to log back into the PC
I had inititially set him up on, and some of the printers are missing - yet
they are all installed on that PC because the main user of that PC uses them
all the time. My question is, if the drivers are all installed on the PC,
then why wouldn't all of the printers show up in his profile based on his
roaming profile settings? Are printers not a part of the roaming profile at
all? - and even if they are not, why would all of the installed network
printers not show up anyway - when they are all installed on that PC? SOme
of them show up and some don't!!

Additional mailbox problem
I've tried setting up an additional email domain within Exchange.
I want to continue to receive emails sent to *...@abc.com but also
want to receive emails sent to *...@xyz.com
I've added xyz.com as a new E-Mail address policy within Recipient
Policies. I've updated the recipient update service and I've checked
with my ISP to make sure everything is set up correctly with them.
They've confirmed that xyz.com is set up exactly the same as abc.com
and that their logs show the few emails I've tested as being
successfully delivered to our server.
The problem I've got is that the emails sent to xyz.com are reaching
our server but Exchange is not routing them to me.
Whilst looking in 'POP3 Connector Manager Properties', under the
troubleshooting tab, I noticed that the Exchange mailbox for
undeliverable emails to be sent to was set to Administrator. I changed
this to my own username and tried sending through another email to
xyz.com
The email arrived in my mailbox in Outlook - no problem.
I changed the mailbox for undeliverable emails to another name in our
organisation and tried again. This time the email arrived in that
persons Outlook Inbox.
So, Exchange is seeing emails coming into the additonal domain xyz.com
as undeliverable.
I'd be grateful if anybody could point me in the right direction. Tag: Software and e-books available Tag: 180257
POP3 and telnet NOT working from workstation clients running XP
Hi, installed the latest batch of updates on XP workstations. I get the
following message trying to get pop3 emails.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'account name', Server:'server', Protocol: POP3, Port
110, Secure (SSL); No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
This is from Outlook and Outlook Express. In this case I'm not using
Exchange but setting up a separate pop3 account in Outlook on the workstation.
If I try to "Telnet pop.compuserve.com 110" I can't get a connection on the
Workstation, but it works fine on the SBS2000 server. I've tried disabling
the firewall, ISA packet filters, creating new outlook email accounts etc.
The only way I can get the client to work is to connect the workstation
directly to the broadband router, then it works fine, so it must be something
to do with the SBS2000 configuration, but I'm stumped on this one.
Any ideas on what to try next?

Purchase Discount Contacts Online And Save!
One major difference between contacts and eyeglasses is that people
generally purchase eye glasses less often (generally once every year),
while people replace their contact lenses more frequently. Contacts
are generally more inexpensive than glasses, but when you consider the
frequency at which you have to buy them you might want to consider
alternatives that can save you money. When you want to purchase your
contact lenses online and you're interested in saving money (and who
isn't these days), there are a number of options for you to purchase
discount contacts online.
Although some eye doctors offer contact lenses at prices competitive
to those on the Internet, it is far easier to purchase discount
contacts online. The major reason is the fact that online suppliers of
contacts don't have the overhead of a doctor's office. They can easily
pass the savings onto consumers. Another reason is associated with the
amount of competition on the Internet. Companies are almost forced to
offer competitive prices because a consumer can easily find and buy
from another supplier. This is especially true since finding a company
that allow you to purchase discount contacts online is a matter of
just browsing the results entered in a search engine.
Online suppliers of contacts can also provide better discount deals.
You can generally buy contacts in larger quantities for a discount.
Just make sure that the shipping costs do not

SBS 2000 Licensing issues - help !
Hello all
Here is my scenario...I have installed SBS 2000 into an existing 2003 AD
domain. The Active Directory is in 2000 native mode. I made the dumb mistake
in assuming I could install the SBS as a member server and install Exchange
from the installation binaries on Disk 3. (without the entire SBS package)
All was fine until I got licensing errors as I connected more than 10 people
to their new mailboxes.
Does anyone have an intimate knowledge of SBS's licensing architecture? I
figured it would be OK because there is less than 25 users and I should have
50 and used the proper installation keys that came with the software. It
smells like it's the fact that it (SBS) is not the DC and the other DC
contains all of the roles (licensing in particular)
My initial thoughts on fixing this issue -
-Make a backup of the MS Exchange Information Store.
-Promote the Win2k member server (SBS 2000) to a DC.
-Transfer all Operations roles from the other 2003 DC (2000 native mode) to
the SBS.
-Reinstall the (entire) SBS suite.
-Restore the Exchange information store
Would this reset the license database?
Does anyone have any suggestions other than my plan..? MVP's?
Thanks in advance.

Wireless network with SBS2003 Server using Dial-up modem
Our very small officce of about 5users will soon enough have its own
little network. I'd like this to be a wireless network. Need to know
my requirements for this.
I would like to follow similar setup to that we have of our main
office network which is wired.
Its set up such that SBS Server and clients connect to the switch.
I would like similar setup for our new wireless network - for this do
I only need a Access Point which would be similar to the switch - or
do I need a wireless router (?). The server would be connected to the
(wireless)switch by cable - Wireless for the clients. This would only
require an access point right(?)
Email /Internet is through dial-up modem on the server.
I also have noted that I would need wireless adapters for each device
(laptop/PC) - which is better - USB or PCI?

SBS 2000 Exchange, e-mails stay queued for a certain domain
Hello everyone,
I hope I posted in the right newsgroup. I have an odd problem I can't
figure out how to fix with a server running SBS 2000, specifically
with the SMTP service. Since a couple of day ago, there seems to be an
issue with sending emails to a specific domain (a week ago sending e-
mails to that domain worked fine). The problem is that the e-mails
stay in the SMTP queue with "Queued" status, there's no failed
delivery notification for the e-mails and I can't find any errors or
reasons why the mail isn't being sent in any log files. As far as
sending mail to other domains/addresses go, everything seems to be
working fine.
I already deleted the e-mails from the queue and asked the senders to
resend them and the results are the same. The mail gets delivered
locally, but doesn't go out to the other recipients, and it happens
just for this one domain.
The message tracking log for the e-mails in question are awalys the
same:
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP Store Driver: Message Submitted from Store
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP: Message Submitted to Advance Queuing
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP: Started Message Submission to Advance Queue
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP: Message Delivered Locally to
outgoingmail@ourdomain.si
28.1.2008 21:45 SMTP Store Driver: Message Delivered Locally to Store
to outgoingmail@ourdomain.si
We have journaling turned on for all outgoing mail, that's why it gets
delivered to that e-mail (don't mind the fake domain). But it never
gets delivered outside to it's final recipient.
I have checked the SMTP log files (found in %systenroot%
\system32\logfiles\SMTPSVC1\) and there is no logged connection being
made to the responsible MX server for the domain in question.
The DNS resolving seems to be working fine, I can get the MX record
with nslookup and I can get the IP of the MX record. The responsible
SMTP server is accepting connections (I connected to it via telnet to
port 25 from the SBS server and tried it out). I have also tried
sending a test e-mail to the recipient domain from a Google Mail
account and from my home e-mail server and in both cases the e-mail
was delivered correctly.
Running smtpdiag.exe from the SBS server gives different results. Time
to time the test passes, but sometimes smtpdiag reports it can't
connect to the responsible MX server. The odd thing is that at those
times (when it fails) I can still successfully establish a telnet
connection to the MX server (and get responses back from it).
EventLog shows no errors either.
Anybody have any other ideas what to try?
Thanks for your answers in advance,
Amadej. Tag: Software and e-books available Tag: 180222

Usisng Outlook Express to access an IMPA Exchange account
We have a new dealer who uses Outlook Express to manage several different
email acccounts he has. Normally dealers connect to our systems using and
RDP connection and run a terminal server session where they then run our
Outlook 2002 client to access their email locally on the exchange server.
However, this dealer has just asked if he can access his email account on
our Exchange 2000 server using his Outlook Express client with an IMAP
configuration instead of having to log onto a terminal server session to do
so.
I am pretty sure this is do-able without any problems, but my question is
regarding security. Is this something that I should not worry about too much
or are there any major security ramifications of allowing this type of a
direct connection to our server? There will not be a VPN connection or an
SSL involved either... This user will just have an internet connection
through his provider and then connect to our server - no VPN/SSL connection
(not sure if either of these should be used for this type of thing or
not...) Just how secure is a direct IMAP connection from an Outlook Express
client to an Exchange 2000 server across the internet?
What else should I be thinking about?

Furthermore I discovered a terrific unability of the NTBackup in operating

no backup is possibile on the server. I disabled the service without no

What Is A Domain Name And Where To Register?
A domain name is an alias for an IP address. Now what is an IP
address? An IP address is a numeric code that signifies where to look
through the Internet for content. An example of an IP address would be
22.226.141.25. Rather than typing in a long and easily forgotten IP
address, a domain name helps you by typing an easily remembered name
to access the same site.
For example, www.domainsatretail.com is a domain name that points to a
specific IP address. People can remember a domain name such as
www.domainsatretail.com much easier than they can a long numeric code.
Domain names are everywhere as many use it everyday. Think of search
sites. Google and Yahoo both have corresponding domain names www.google.com
and www.yahoo.com. If you have ever sent an email you have used a
domain name. For example when

SMTP Connector for some users only (SBS 2000)
I am having problems sending emails to Yahoo.com and my ISP does not provide
a smart host service. I would like to add an SMTP Connector for our outbound
emails to Yahoo.com and have it only effective for some of our users. For
example have emails from Fred and Sue routed through this connector, but
emails from all other users routed through the normal SmallBusiness SMTP
connector. I tried raising the cost on the normal connector to 2 and adding
a new connector. The new connector was set for SMTP to Yahoo.com at cost 1
and set to only allow users Fred and Sue. That worked for Fred and Sue. The
problem is that other users got an NDR from our server saying that "You do
not have permission to send to this recipient ... Recipient address
rejected: invalid sender (3)". I had hoped that the connector would reject
the email and Exchange would try the higher cost option that would not
reject it. I was wrong.
This is my first time adding a connector. Am I trying to do something that
Exchange 2000 will not do or am I just doing about it incorrectly.
Thanks for any advice,

SBS/Exchange 2000 and Yahoo.com email problems
Suddenly about a month ago, we started having problems sending emails to
Yahoo.com addresses. These are typically followups to telephone inquiries
that we get. The intended recipients complained about never getting the
emails. We have had a few problems with Pacific Bell, AT&T, and SBC emails.
We are not having this problem with outbound emails to other domains.
I set up a test Yahoo email address and found out that test emails were
getting placed into the spam/bulk folder. I tracked a few lost emails
(through Exchange System Manager) and found that they were all delivered to
a Yahoo.com server, sometimes after a few hours of retries. My guess is that
Yahoo is falsely labelling our emails as suspected spam for some reason. My
further guess is that the Yahoo.com recipients do not know enough to look in
their spam folders and do not know enough to figure out if they told Yahoo
Mail to discard suspected spam rather than place it in their spam folder.
Our SBS 2000 server sends the emails directly under our domain name. We have
a fixed IP. I checked the IP against the spam blacklists and we were clean.
We have an SPF record and Google Mail says we pass the SPF test. We do not
have anything set up for DomainKeys -- I am not sure that we could with
SBS/Exchange 2000.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions? Any ideas for
further diagnosis?
Thanks,

Group Policies Power Users Missing
Hi There,
For a long while we have been reciving these errors

Windows Cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO. The file must be present at
the location <>. (). Group Policy Processing Aborted.
It turned out that the Policies folder in sysvol was empty so I recreated
them using this knowledge base article

We then started to receive these error messages

Computer: Servername
Security policies are propaged with warning. 0x534: No mapping between
account names and security ID's was done
From this Knowledgebase i worked out that it looks like the Power Users
group has been removed.

It is no longer present in Active Directory, I think this has been removed a
long time ago and we won't have a backup of the Active Directory schema to
restore from. My question to you would be is there anyway around this or
would it need a complete rebuild and setup up the AD from scratch again? Its
not to much of a problem at the moment but in the future we probably will be
upgrading to SBS 2003 via a swing migration, but if the schema if faulty
then there is no point doing a swing as that will be corrupt too. Tag: Software and e-books available Tag: 180133
10061 - Connection refused OWA
Hi there,
I have an SBS 2000 with ISA and trying to configure so that OWA works. I had
it working fine then had to reun the ICW for another reason and now I am
getting the 10061 - Connection refused page. When I ran ICW, I selected to
use ISA packet filtering and ticked the boxes of all the services that I
wanted to allow though. This seemed to work OK although I had to add a custom
rule to allow internal clients out onto the net.
When I ra-ran the ICW today I made sure that I selected "do not change my
firewall config) so that nothing would change and yet I find myselg now not
able to connect again.
Am I missing something?
Thanks

Upgrading from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 Suggestions
Hi there. I have a client who has purchased hardware and software for
upgrading our SBS. Does anyone have any overall advice about the
upgrade process? Since we are moving to new, more powerful hardware, I
think that there might be some issues.
I have heard of a "Swing" method.. I went to a site and they have the
process for sale. Wondering if that is a good idea or not.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

User cannot connect to Exchange 2000, using Outlook 2002
Hi there. I am posting this in the SBS200 forum hoping to get some
suggestions. Here is the issue:
We are running SBS 2000. Clients are using Outlook 2002. My client
VPN's into the environment and can access network shares no problem.
However, when he starts Outlook he cannot connect to the exchange
server. He is the only client that VPN's in so I cannot tell if anyone
else has the same issue.
I have asked him to send over the exact errors, but he has not yet
done so.
Any idea's on what this guy did to his PC?
Thanks for any help,

Memory Leak-Poolmon/Process Explorer Question
We are using SBS2000 with all latest service packs for years--too
many! In the last 3 weeks we began to have a memory leak in the non-
paged pool in which the server would have to be rebooted after exactly
1 week to the day & within a 3-hour timeframe. We ran poolmon.exe to
help pinpoint the culprit and have collected data over a 4 day period.
In poolmon three are (2) suspect tags:

upgrading to SQL Server SP4
I am looking at installing SP4 for our instance of SQL Server 2000 installed
on our SBS.
Upgrading the Analysis services to SP4 is a completely separate download. We
do not use analysis services at all. WOuld you recommend that I install SP4
for it as well or is it not a big deal to have the SQL db at SP4 and leave
analysis services where it is?

installing the latest SQL Server service pack on SBS
We have Shavlik Netchk Protect ver 5.9 that allows you to use a remote SQL
Server DB for the backend. The product is much more robust when configured
this way.
Before configuring however, I need to upgrade our instance of SQL Server
installed on the SBS to at least SP3. A quick search tells me that the
latest SQL Server 2000 service pack is SP4.
When I looked at the MS documentation for the service pack, it did not list
Small Business Server 2000 in teh list of "supported operating systems".
Can someone confirm for me if it will be ok to download and install SP4 on
our Windows 2000 SBS machine?

Users Getting Prompted for Passwords
I have a strange one. I have two users out of 10 that are constantly
prompted for their passwords when opening Outlook (connect to the Exchange
Server) or trying to access shared drives from the SBS server. I have reset
passwords for them several times but it seems to be intermitten. Where
should I look to try to resolve this issue?
Thanks

Firewall Client/Proxy Server Question
We are using SBS2000 --with ISA Server 2000. We only have XP Clients.
Is there any reason to have both the Firewall Client and the Proxy
Server setting in Internet Explorer set to point to the ISA Server at
port 8080? Or, is the the Firewall Client alone sufficient for
Internet browsing? We think that setting the proxy setting is ony
necessary if for some reason (such as the OS or browser in use) the
Firewall Client cannot be installed.
As it is now, we have both. However, periodically, but very
infrequently, at random websites, the user is prompted for a username/
password for the Proxy Server. If we remove the proxy settings, the
prompts do not occur, but we sometimes get "page cannot be displayed"
or similar error. We are not sure why we are prompted as the same
webpage may or may not prompt the user?
