I looked at Software Update Services on an SBS2K server a while ago, and it
looked interesting but I didn't have time to go further. Now I'm trying to
reevaluate it. I can't open the http://server/SUSadmin page - I get "HTTP
500 - Internal server error", whether trying to connect from a workstation
or the server itself.

I've tried uninstalling SUS, downloading latest version from MS, and
reinstalling, but still get the same problem.

Any suggestions, please?

How about from the server http://localhost/susadmin. From the server or a
workstation, http://serverIP/susadmin. If you can get the page to come up,
maybe you can find the problem by looking in the options.

Failing that, I'd go to the SUS page at microsoft.com and read the faq's
etc. Also try posting to microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

Hi Dave

Following up your suggestions:

http://localhost/susadmin on the server gives "cannot find server or DNS
error" (ditto for http://localhost ???)

http://serverip/susadmin on both server and client brings up a login
credentials screen which won't accept any username/password I can come up
with, followed by "HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required ".

Any further suggestions? I've read all I can find on the SUS page. Haven't
posted to other NG yet.

What bugs me is that a few weeks ago this all seemed to work (but I guess
you've heard that before).

Regards

Andrew

I wonder if maybe you really do have a DNS problem. When I try to access
http://localhost on the SBS I get a 404 error, but a second window opens
with an IIS Help page (it resolves to something like
http://localhost/localstart.asp).

The password prompts are caused because IE treats addresses with "dots" as
external addresses even though they're not. I can get past the password
prompt by using my own or the administrator password, again making me wonder
if you've got a different problem.

Have you checked all your DNS settings and your binding order, making sure
that everything points to the SBS' internal NIC for DNS? Any errors logged?
Anything else acting up?

I'll try reset the binding order (it seems to go wrong occasionally when I
run ICW or change configurations) and see if it makes a difference. I'm
attending training at the moment, so will do it sometime next week.

If anybody's still out there, I've checked the binding order and it seems
fine.

Following up:

A google search found the following solution in someone else's thread. It
worked for me:

I believe I had this identical problem after applying W2KSP4.
Symptoms are that http://localhost/SUSAdmin would open with a 500
error and an additional error code (which I don't remember offhand).

VBSCRIPT.DLL somehow became unregistered. Fix is to run regsrv32 as
so:

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Open SUSAdmin again; this should work.
