    - Migration (SBS4.5 -> SBS2K) headaches - Recommendations? I'm in the process of a SBS4.5 to SBS2K migration, and stumbled upon a few issues that I can't seem to find an answer in any faq, article or white paper. Here's my current setup: PDC: SBS4.5 - dual homed, running SQL7, Exchange 5.5, IIS4, VPN (SMTP and PPTP ports open), OfficeScan SBS Member servers: NT4 Server Win2k Server - dual homed, IIS5 (FTP, HTTP and SSL ports open) Win2k Server - SQL2K The dual homed NICs on the PCs are on the DMZ side behind firewall, and SBS is not using MS Proxy Server. What I am trying to accomplish is this: a) Install SBS2K on a new PC with SQL2K, Exchange2K, IIS5, VPN, TM C/S/M Suite (same name as old server, same network addressing scheme - 10.0.0.0/24). This would be a temporary SBS PC. b) Replace the old SBS PC with 1 above to keep users happy and working. c) Upgrade old SBS PC hardware (mainly HD upgrades) d) Reinstall SBS2K on upgraded PC with same services and reimport data Basically I have to do the migration twice, once to a new PC, have it run for a few days while I get the old server upgraded, then reinstall SBS2K on the upgraded PC (this is the one that has RAID, the other PC doesn't). We want to be able to switch back to the old SBS4.5 PC if there is anything wrong with the SBS2K PC. I don't plan on using ISA, since I will be using the firewall as the gateway. Is there any advantage to installing ISA just to protect the SBS PC? Now some of the questions I hope to get answered are: 1a) Is there a way to keep the SMI (Single Message Instance) of Exchange if I am doing a new installation? I've heard rumors of being able to do some inplace upgrade by moving databases from 5.5 to 2000, and using the same PC name, users, etc. Am I dreaming here? I think I'm pretty much stuck with using ExMerge. The reason here is that I know that SBS limits you to an IS of 16GB, which may be exceeded if I move individual mailboxes. 1b) Does an inplace upgrade of SBS4.5 to SBS2K maintain the SMI of Exchange? If so, I can consider doing an inplace upgrade, then backing up the Exchange data to migrate to the new "temp" SBS2K PC (and then doing that again when I need to move the data back into the "real" server). Would this work? 1c) How about a site to site transfer from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange2K while both servers are up? Granted currently both use the same PC name, IP and domain name.. is there a way to do this with SBS and use the Exchange Tasks to do that? At the very worse, I can get around this by doing ExMerge twice.. Once when I go from Exchange 5.5 to 2K on to the "temp" PC, then once again going back to the "real" server. What would people recommend here? 2) Okay, done worrying about Exchange. When I'm ready to get the "real" server back online, and about to take the "temp" SBS PC off, how do I migrate the AD users and groups, permissions to the "real" SBS PC? Both PCs will still be named the same, as well as on the same IP and domain. Don't I need to use ADMT to do something like this? How do I pull this off? (Going to be reorganizing users into different groups than they currently are assigned when installing SBS2K the first time. I don't want to go thru this again when doing the 2nd migration, and I'm not sure how that'll impact the workstations..)     - Multiplying mapped drives Hi, All the workstations on my SBS network have a mapped drive E: wich is a share on the server. from yesterday all the W98 machines are remapping the drive, all the way up to drive M:, this hasn't occured on the W2K machines or the XP machines, the logon script doesn't map the drive E: (e.g I don't use net share....).     - hfnetchklt on SBS I am trying to setup something for my clients to manage their server and workstations for updates. The lite version of HFNetChk allows up to 50 computers which is perfect for the SBS network. I know it is recommended to install on a workstation to push the updates as this is what I do on my own network. But can it be installed on the SBS and accessed with Terminal services? I am thinking of installing it on the servers and access it remotely to administer updates. I know that I can probably take control of a workstation also but I didn't want to disrupt someone that might be working on their workstation. Any thoughts? Pros or Cons?     - <warning venting ahead> End user awareness To whom it may concern: I have a inside mail account and a public mail account [i.e. my pacbell.net account]. I only pull off email from it when I get home at night. Due to the number of SoBig.F, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT, my 25MB mailbox got full of Sobig messages... I've now increased the mailbox size to 125MB...hopefully that will hold until I can get home. To those unlucky people reading this vent/rant... I'm sorry. Here goes.... a. In this day and age, to SELTZER COMPUTER, PENNY COMPUTER, and the 3 other identifiable computers that are nailing my mailbox with Sobigs, if you can't even get up to date antivirus on your systems, then unplug yourself from the Internet. You are incapable of securing the most basic of computer functions. We MVPS were pinging back and forth and all agreed that most of us are doing a 'every hour on the hour' pull of new updates from the Trend site. If you are only doing a once a day pull... you aren't protected enough. 2. End users.... You ....yes... you there reading this. If you get an email with a .pif attachment.... trust me... it's ALWAYS a virus. Pif files are never sent by "mere mortals wanting to send Word Documents or other sources of vital information needed to do "real work", PIF files are used in the same vein as .exe files and .bat files. Instruct your clients that even if you fail to do #1, that no one who is a sane person should click and launch a .pif file. Furthermore....... 3. You as the IT consultant network admin...yeah you.... PIF files should ALWAYS be be blocked and stripped off of all email files. I've never received a PIF file in that I've truly wanted.... they're always viruses. And if you allow your end users employees to open up PIF files... then do me a favor and before you leave tonight...yank your rj45 cat 5 connection from the wall so that my mailbox doesn't overflow by the morning. We can blame Microsoft for a lot of things..... this one is our stupidity. We don't HAVE to open up every attachment you know....some of them are NOT good. 11 more emails in the 5 minutes I've taken to type this rant/vent up.... 10 of them Sobig.F files. oh I spoke too soon...and another 10 additional emails hit my box.... all 10 out of 10 SoBigs. -- "Don't lose sight of security.     - Troubles accessing contact list from XP Pro Client. With OL2k2, on XP Pro client, I can not pull the contact list up from the dropdown menu or the fields in an email (To, Cc, Bcc) Though, I am able to get the domain email addresses. OL remembers all the email addresses, if I start to type in an email address not on the domain, it'll allow me to enter it after 3 beginning characters are entered. Is there a way to map this back to the correct contact list?     - securing SBS (exchange) server Our SBS server has 2 nics, 1-adsl, 1-to network switch, running SBS 2000 c/w ISA. While I was on vacation, our system got hacked & flooded with email, & turned into an open relay. Our supplier support tech. managed to close the relay, but i'm still getting 100's of messages in the "BADMAIL" folder every day. Is this normal or is there a way to block out the badmail? Can I increase the ISA Security?? How?     - MS SUS & SBS.. Ive been trying to get SUS working on my SBS 2000 Server to no avail. I have even reinstalled the server from scratch with no luck..     - roaming profiles Due to the fact that the user group I am working with has very little experience with roaming profiles they have been using there desktops as a filing system for there documents. This has created some problems for us the profiles got to be and were timing out when trying to sync. back to the server. Now it looks like I have got all of them cleaned back up but I still have a few users that have goodly sized profiles because of info in there app data folder and I am wondering what is the normal size of a good healthy profile as there is nothing on this server to compare to? In the past I have never had this problem before to pay that much attention to there size. So an idea as to where we need to be at would be a great help.     - Outlook blocked attachment Outlook 2002 on Win2k client behind SBS2k. Email had a *.pif attachment which can't get. Message at top of email says "Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachment: filename.pif" Q1: Where are the settings that control what gets blocked?     - ISP Blocking incoming SMTP Exchange Mail This is wacky. We have several clients that have been using SBS2000 SMTP mail with the their ISP connection through Adelphia. Starting last Thursday, none of them were able to receive mail, including my business. Their MX record is forwarded from where their domain is hosted (not Adelphia). Speaking with Adelphia Tech Support (basically useless), they told me they have put a policy in place last Thursday to block mail to port 135 (not sure what that means)becaus of the worm virus. This is what eventually would go to the Exchange portion of the SBS.. Can somthing be changed on the Exchange end?     - Disappearing external POP3 email Anyone know causes/cures for the disappearing POP3 email referenced in Q274539? Know how to get the messages back? We've been using Exchange 2000 server for barely three weeks and this has already happened to two different users (Exchange checks approx. 20 POP3 mailboxes on our ISPs mail server).     - Shared Fax after SP4 After upgrading to Service Pack 4 From certain people we get errors about unable to receive a fax the event ID is 32901 the category is inbound.     - Cannot see shared folders or use outlook after ISA install HELP! Before I installed ISA our users (all on external IPs) accessed our SBS via its external NIC. We were able to use Outlook and access shared folders on the SBS. Today I installed ISA straight from the CD's setup.exe. (I couldn't find an option for it in "Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components" or in the menu that appears on inserting SBS CD 1.) I also migrated a few machines to the internal network. I've added a packet filter in ISA to allow any protocol in both directions on the external NIC. I've added a protocol rule to allow all protocols to be used by Domain users. WHAT I CAN DO: Use Exchange as per usual via OWA. Ping the IP address of the server. View the server via VNC. WHAT I CAN'T DO: Use Exchange from MS Outlook - emails do not get sent or received. See the server or any other client in Network Neighbourhood. Access any file shares from the server. Ping the server by name. Set the domain for a client - I get the error "The domain name BLANK.BLANK.co.uk is either invalid or does not exist". I have tried using the magic disk but I get the error "The network location cannot be reached...     - Slow Performance/Locking Up For no APPARENT reason the server has been moving very slow or locking up. Users are losing connectivity to the file drive randomly. It seems like the more people who log on the more pronounced the problem becomes. Doesn't seem to make sense. It did give me a ring buffer(for the mouse) warning in the event viewer.     - Adding users - more probs, please help! I have tried to follow the instructions in the "How to setup a Windows XP Pro Client in SBS 2000 Network" but I am still having problems. I am able to connect to the internet, but I can't seem to get this computer to connect to my .local domain using the instructions provided. I keep getting this error: "The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain ****-MY DOMAIN.local: The error was: "DNS name does not exist."     - Offline Files/Folders on SBS 2000? Hi, Anyone know why the offline files tab under folder options is not available on Small Business Server 2000? I saw an article on Windows 2000 server that if you run termianl services this tab is unavailable. Does SBS 2000 have Terminal Services, or does it not support the offline files feature?     - DNS updates Is there any way of speeding up the DNS updates within SBS2K. We have some remote users and use DDNS to connect to these workstations (ftp & remote admin) as their srvice providers will not supply static IP. When the IP changes the DDNS entry is updated almost instantly, & if I ping the DDNS name using a notebook connected directly into our router I can access the site immediately. So the DDNS service & our ISP are doing their job. Problem lies when we try to access it from internal desktops through SBS/ISA, if I ping the DDNS entry the IP address of the remot site could be out of date by as much as a day!     - VPN does not work from laptop using GPRS We have a Sony VAIO laptop that is Bluetooth enabled. We are dialling up to GPRS via a Sony T68i and we keep getting Error 721 - The remote Computer did not respond. For further information.... THe connection is to Orange (UK) GPRS..which is fine, as we can browse the Internet through the GPRS connection at 115.2 kpbs. But when I fire off the VPN connection I get Error 721.     - New mail notification thru OWA I recently reinstalled SBS2000 and in the process, I lost some functionality in OWA. Prior to the reinstallation, if I were out of the office and accessing OWA I would get a notification window saying that I had new mail. I am no longer getting that notification.     - mobile users Hello All, I am running SBS 2000 with latest sp2 for about 20 users. We are using exchange for our email. All desktops are using outlook configured for exchange and all laptops are configured for imap since the laptop users are in sales. Sometimes they do have high speed onthe road but not all the time, so I decided to go with Imap versus the exchange client. OWA is up and running for when they do not have access to their laptops. My problem is, when their mail box gets over 100 mb, they start to have time out issues with the outlook - imap client even when they do have high speed access. Does the outlook - imap client have a size limitation or is there a better way to manage mobile sales force? I know OWA is an option but they users would prefer to just use outlook.     - Web site access Hi all, I have a user that need to get to a url to do some accounting work. They are usind SBS2000 and ISA . They can get to all the other sites they want but get page not found when they try to get to this site. They put the ip address in and should be able to get a log in screen. If they try this from home or outside the lan they have no trouble getting to the site. I have setup a rule to allow her to get out but still have issue. Any idea's would be appreciated.     - DNS spurious queries Our SBS is connected to the internet via an ISDN Lan modem. Our server has for some time been making contiuous DNS queries to the DNS server at our ISP for numerous addresses which should be local to the SBS server. Examples are: _LDAP._TCP.DC._MSDCS.ELMMAXDOMAIN.ELMMAX.CO.UK _KERBEROS._TCP.ELMMAXDOMAIN.ELMMAX.CO.UK _LDAP _LDAP._TCP.GC._MSDCS.ELMMAXDOMAIN.ELMMAX.CO.UK _KPASSWD._UDP.ELMMAXDOMAIN.ELMMAX.CO.UK GC._MSDCS.ELMMAXDOMAIN.ELMMAX.CO.UK and various other combinations. ELMMAXDOMAIN is our local computer network domain and 'elmmax.co.uk' is our URL, all which are properly registered on the server when it was set up. How do I stop this. I tried using the local DNS table in the LAN modem but this has run out of entries and isn't a proper solution anyway. Any clues please as the DNS server is something I have avoided up to now. Simon.     - Router issues revisited. OK, I think I've settled on the Netopia 9120-XL. I know people are doing VPN's without fancy VPN add ons for their routers. I already have a modem, but the server doesn't like it at all, so it seemed to make some sense to have the backup dial out connection removed from the box. (the existing modem is a 3Com/USR and magically diasbles itself all the time, requiring 2 reboots and a reinstall) I guess as a further question, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong in ISA. If I hook our dedicated IP modem to the servers second NIC and run a probe test on ports I keep finding 80 and 443 are open even though I put rules in to explicity block all requests from outside to these ports. I'm using the "Shields Up" Port Probe feature from GRC.com I'm getting the general feeling that Mr. Gibson is a bit of an extremist who isn't giving people the whole picture, but his tools seems to provide a pretty basic service in letting you know what is exposed on your server.     - Secure OWA We have an SBS2000 Box sitting on our 10/100 Network with around 30 clients. The SBS Box has two LAN NICs, one for LAN and one for WAN, where the WAN nic is connected to a firewall then a DSL router to provide 24/7 secure Internet Access. What we want to do is open port 80 on the firewall and allow people to browse for OWA (we have a static IP from our DSL provider). Although the concept will work, the users will be dial-up users who will access their mailbox whilst they are on the road using laptops. My only cause for concern is security...if I open port80 on our firewall, this would mean that I have opened up a door to the SBS. Although I have heard of SSL etc..., I want to be able to read and follow any white-papers or just user feedback on how to go about this. Although the SBS2000 box is patched etc..., just opening a firewall for incoming port80 is a security risk here...so I need to find out how people do secure OWA from the outside world to their SBS2000 running Exch2000. Technically... you don't "purchase it" in the next two years. You have the
right for new software for next two years... you only pay for the media
(~$25US) as long as it is relased in that time period (may it be 1, 2 or 10
versions). Also, may also want to consider that CALs (if you have more than
5 users) need SA too... which mean more $$$.
