The last "Small Biz Server news" for the 2003 year. We will have the
first edition of 2004 next Sunday.

Kevin's Christmas present
news://msnews.microsoft.com:119/eHyJ7qlyDHA.3224@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl
If you hang around the SBS newsgroups for more than a week, you know
that I occasionally publish a "Song of the Week" parody. Well, I had
some free time last weekend, and compiled most of the "Song of the Week"
postings from the past two years into a single PDF file for your singing
pleasure! (71 pages of singing pleasures to be exact)

I've uploaded the PDF file to one of my websites. All I ask is that you
enter your name or nickname or NG handle, and where you are from, and
you will then be given a choice of viewing or downloading the PDF file.

Again, it's free. But if you don't like my parodies - don't download it!

Merry Christmas!

Mariette solves the GFI problem [and they've been notified by me -
nobody calls us "not normal ;-)]

Hallo all,

The problem with GFI Fax and SBS 2003 is really simple. The
NetPrintQueue2Fax printer driver is a very old NT 4.0 Kernel Mode
printer and because of this it will not install on SBS 2003 because the
default policy of *any* Windows 2003 installation is not to allow
installation of these old drivers.

If you want to install GFI Fax you must change the policy. Here is how
you do that:

1. Open Group Policy Management and open the Default Domain Controllers
policy. NOT the default domain policy.
2. Double-click Administrative Templates, and then double-click Printers.
3. Right-click Disallow installation of printers using kernel mode
drivers, and then click Properties.
4. In the Setting tab, click Disabled, and then click OK.

Explanation of the 'Disallow installation of printers using kernel mode
drivers'

Determines whether printers using kernel-mode drivers may be installed
on the local computer. Kernel-mode drivers have access to system-wide
memory, and therefore poorly-written kernel-mode drivers can cause stop
errors.

If you do not configure this setting on Windows Server 2003 family
products, the installation of kernel-mode printer drivers will be
blocked. ****this is what goes wrong with GFI Fax****

If you enable this setting, installation of a printer using a
kernel-mode driver will not be allowed.

My conclusion is that GFI is not really ready for Windows 2003 with the
old NetPrintQueue2Fax printer driver but I have had succes with the
above solution.

The second problem is that GFI Fax expects that Microsoft Exchange MTA
Stacks is running. On a default SBS 2003 this is not the case so you
have to switch to Automatic start.

[The NNTP service should probably be running as well]

For anyone who ordered a SBS2k3 trial kit and got a Front Page cdrom
with a bad product key....

Subject: SBS Trial FrontPage Key Announcement
Date: Tue, 23 Dec 2003 13:52:10 -0800
From: <miles@online.catalysis.com>
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

In order to address concerns over the inclusion of the
incorrect FrontPage key with the Windows Small Business
Server 2003 Premium Evaluation kits (not the Standard
Edition or RC kits), Microsoft will be sending each
customer who ordered a kit online a replacement Product
Key. The Product Keys will be mailed in conjunction with
an updated version of CD #3. The new Product Keys and the
replacement CDs will be mailed in early January.

Note: The updated version of Windows Small Business Server
2003 Disc 3 contains a fix for an installation issue
affecting any new installations or upgrades of Windows
SharePoint Services and Windows Small Business Server 2003
(Standard and Premium editions). This installation issue
will affect customers installing Windows SharePoint
Services and Windows Small Business Server 2003 or
upgrading Windows Small Business Server 2003 after
November 24, 2003.

Customers do not need this new CD to resolve the
installation issue. A patch that corrects the issue is
available for download free of charge from Windows Update
and the Microsoft Download Center.

www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/installationissue.

If a customer has installed the patch, he/she will not
need to take any immediate action upon receiving the
updated Disc 3. Simply review the Windows Small Business
Server 2003 CDs included in the original packaging and
replace the CD labeled "Windows Small Business Server 2003
Disc 3" with the updated Disc 3. Then, during any future
installation or configuration of Windows Small Business
Server 2003, he/she should use the new CD when prompted
for Disc 3.
----------------------------------

If you have a Retail SBS or a OEM SBS, order a replacement CDRom here
https://microsoft.order-4.com/sbsrtmcd/

I already received a replacement CDrom via Software Assurance

Why is it that when I try to double-click the links in these posting that
start with news:// that I get these errors:
Outlook Express pops up: The server could not be found.
Details > Account: msnews.microsoft.com:119 / Server: msnews.microsoft.com /
Protocol: NNTP / Port: 119
Clicking ok, results in this: "Outlook Express could not download the
requested message. It is likely that the message was removed or expired from
the server."
I have also tried pasting the link in IE, with the same results.
When this happens, it automatically adds a News account in Outlook Express
called msnews.microsoft.com:119 but you can't subscribe to any groups, says
the server cannot be found.
I had my Outlook Express configured for news.microsoft.com (from the good
ole days), so I added msnews.microsoft.com, which appears as the same
server, but I still can't access these links from either account.

Rick,

I have the same problem. I thought it was just me!
I'll let Susan identify how to fix it, but here is my workaround:

1. Copy & paste the URL from her post into your web browser
2. Then delete the :119 from the URL before clicking go/enter

Example: this link:
news://msnews.microsoft.com:119/eHyJ7qlyDHA.3224@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl
should become:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/eHyJ7qlyDHA.3224@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl

>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>2. Double-click Administrative Templates, and then double-click
>
> Printers.
>
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>>
