I use SAV AV SBS at several clients sites. I find it very effective at
virus control. One modification over the default is to setup a scheduled
task to run LiveUpdate on the server once an hour to ensure you get the
definition updates quickly.

The Exchange component does screen out detected viruses from e-mails at the
server before it gets to the client. There is client e-mail scanning as
well as a second level of defence. It can be configured to send e-mails to
the sender/receipient and administrator upon detection of a virus,
prohibited content or spam. Of course you probably don't want to send
notification to a spammer as this might clue them in that they have got a
valid e-mail address for you.

There are different opinions on this NG, some like Norton others like Trend.
If you google the group you can find a great number of discussions on the
subject.

Dave,

I am a happy SAV 8.x user and I am interested in the steps you took to
perform the hourly AV update. I have tried to use the 'cegetter.bat'
method posted on Symantec's KB, but it appears to use outbound/inbound
ftp and I really don't want to open those ports. Is this the mehtod
you use to get the updates? Or have you chosen a different route?

Thanks for your reply and I apologize for hijacking the thread!

Sean

In my setup, I did a GPO startup script that installs/updates the software
to all clients when they boot the machine. That makes sure that every single
machine in the domain gets it.

Liveupdate (on the clients) update from the server in real time, ie. as soon
as the server gets a new definition it is passed along to all the clients.

There is a bug in the Exchange part, that refuses to send e-mail
notifications to the senders of the infected machines, but that's really OK
as we don't want to use that feature anyway.

IMHO, NAV really rocks
