Recently built SBS2000 (sp3)
P4 (2,4)
1024 MB ram
120 GB (2x RAID1) on Promise 4000 (PCI)
SIS network adapter (on mainboard) for EXT (router)
3com network adapter (PCI) for LAN int.
UPS
Onstream IDE (on sec IDE) tape backup
Pioneer DVD/CD player
Video on mainboard.
External USB modem for sending fax.
NO other software than SBS and Mcafee Groupshield.

The SBS starts slow (more than 10 minutes) and Exchange is
NOT started (ofcourse mcafee Groupshield also not)
Manual start of Exchange AFTERWARDS, no problem.

Any ideas
Thanks, Harpert

I have a similar problem if I login too early during boot up. If I wait
until the disks stop grinding and then login, all services are OK. However,
comparing servers, spec is lower than yours.

DNS set up properly?
Network Setup correct?

Hi Harpert,

I *think* you're saying Exchange is set to automatic start, but doesn't. You
should have some events logged, posting those would certainly help.

Anyway.

10 minutes does seem a bit slow, considering your hardware.

Things to check:

a) check binding order of nics', internal first, external second.

If that's not the problem:

b) set your antivirus product services to start manually.

If that makes a difference, then check to ensure that the exclusions are set
correctly. (there's a kb article).

Harpert,

This kb article contains a complete discussion, as well as links to others
that detail the exclusions required.

The nics should have their dns point to the ip of the internal nic.
You enter the isp dns numbers when runing the Internet Connection
Wizard. If your antivirus tries to scan the M: drive your server will
be quite pokey. The articles Les and others mentioned at
www.smallbizserver.net give great graphical directions.
http://www.smallbizserver.net/sbs2000/With_two_network_adapters_a_static_IP_address_ISA_and_a_router.aspx
Note that you need to find the article 292822 at support.microsoft.com
and do those edits if you ever want to vpn. Even if you do not running
the edits is a good idea.
