In the tree, opening stuff like Computer Management (local) is immediate,
but other stuff, like First Organisation (Exchange) and Active Directory
Users and Computers takes around 30seconds each time. Similarly, looking at
users if I right click for properties it again takes a while before the
properties are displayed.
The hardware is a 3GHz Xeon with 2GB RAM, so it's not lacking in that
department.
Any suggestions?

1. Is the video on the server "shared memory"?
2. 2GB really is bare minimum memory and if video is taking some of
that...well

2GB min for SBS2K?
1GB was always the recommended min for that.

well if you visit the Microsoft Website it tells you can get away with a lot
less...and you might get it to start and run, but will you be happy with it?
Not likely

I can remember the first time I bought flight simulator box said min
requirements was 486/66 with 64 mb of RAM and I think thats about what I
had.

Did it run? yes..was I happy with the way it performed? No way...

Hi Cris,

I only have (2) SBS boxes, and the other one is only a 1.8GHz CPU with 1GB
RAM. That one doesn't exhibit the problem, hence my statement that I don't
think the memory is an issue. The task manager shows the CPU running around
5%, and it doen't change when I click to expand the 'First Organisation' -
it just sits and waits for around 30seconds.

Make sure your antivirus on the server isn't scanning the M: drive.
Also, set the AV on the server not to "scan the network drives".
Have you run a CHKDSK on your drives?
Are the drives SCSI or IDE?
So you have neough disk space left on the drives?
Have you defragged them lately?
How big are the Exchange Stores (databases)?
Do you have any external drives attached to the server? (Maybe detach them,
reboot the server and see if you still experience "slow response" on the
server).

Also check NIC bindings...

Right click My Network Places...Properties. Highlight the Internal NIC. Then
select Advanced...Advanced Settings from the top menu for that window.

The Internal NIC should be displayed first followed by the External NIC. If
not, move the Internal NIC to the top of the list.
The Internal NIC should have File and Printer Sharing bound (check marked)
to the TCP/IP Protocol.
The Internal NIC should have Client for Microsoft Networks bound (check
marked) to the TCP/IP Protocol.
The External NIC should be bound to TCP/IP only (no other protocols or
services).

Yes, Internal NIC at the top, followed by External NIC and finally (Remote
Access connections).
Internal NIC bound to File & Printer sharing and Client for MS Networks.
External NIC unbound and running TCP/IP only.

C: Partition is 12GB, 7.3GB free
D: Partition is for data and is virtually 100% free space
Exchange DB is under 10MB
(it is currently a test server, hence lack of data at present)

Drives are SCSI, configured as Raid-1
Disks are physically in good condition (no CHKDSK errors, no SMART alerts)
No external drives, AV not scanning M:

Hmmm... Disconnect cables to internal and external NICs. Disconnect any UPS
cables. Reboot. Does the performance get better?

Are all fans working (including CPU fan)? (Thinking maybe an overheating
issue).

Did the performance issue just start or was it after a recent update or
software install?

Re: Slow response in SBS Admin Console by Neil

Neil

All hardware, fans, temperatures etc are showing green.
It's a relatively new install, and has always exhibited this problem. Client
side seems 100% - no login issues, fast access to e-mail, files and internet
(although only under test conditions - it hasn't run with 'real' users). It
is only the management console that has this dwell.
I installed it according to the notes I made from the only other SBS install
I have done, the only difference being that I enabled VPN on this one. Today
I disabled VPN and re-ran the ICW to remove the firewall rule. The ICW
failed with:
Error 0x800706ba returned from call to CNetCommit::Common()
Error 0x800706ba returned from call to CNetCommit::Commit()

Shut down and re-booted and tried again. This time it failed with:
Error 0xd returned from call to CEMailCommit::Commit()

In both cases I reverted to original settings and all seems to be working OK
from the client side.

So, what to do? Bearing in mind the server is not live should I trash it and
try again, or should I put it to work and just put up with the delays in the
management console?

Oh, and I should come clean and admit that when I was setting up NTbackup
the first time I inadvertantly ticked M: rather than Microsoft Information
Store - but I'm pretty sure the problem existed before I did that.

Regards

You might try reinstalling the Small Business Server 2000 Console...

How to Reinstall the Small Business Server 2000 Console
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292731/EN-US/

If that doesn't work, I'd be inclined to flatten and reinstall the server
(checking to make sure the console works properly after reinstall and
without doing anything else to the server). You may have a problem with
Exchange...

ICW fails during exchange portion
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000/browse_thread/thread/d400eb6b03c1fd47/4e8b28ef661903e6?lnk=st&q=ICW+0xd+returned+from+call+to+CEMailCommit%3A%3ACommit()&rnum=3&hl=en#4e8b28ef661903e6

...but reinstalling II and Exchange may be more of an adventure (or
frustration) than just reinstalling from scratch.

And make sure the network setup is correct...

Two Nics, a dynamic IP address, ISA and a router

Re: Slow response in SBS Admin Console by Neil

Noted that running the Exchange System Manager from the start menu also
takes around 30sec to start up, so Googled that issue and it seems that the
issue has been reported before in the Exchange newsgroups. Unfortunately no
definitive answers, but the most frequent advice was to check the DNS.
Used Start->Administrative Tools->DNS to run a manual DNS query and it
passed immediately, so I guess that DNS is not an issue? Does that jog
anyones thought processes - I'm reluctant to tear down an otherwise
(apparently) good server when it may be a simple setup issue.

As an aside, my ISP no longer publishes fixed DNS server addresses, the
router is allocated the DNS server IP on connection. Therefore in the ICW
setup I just noted the routers currently allocated addresses and entered
them into the wizard. So, what happens if the ISP changes the DNS addresses?
Is it correct practice to substitute the IP of my router as the DNS server?

Regards

Looks like I've got it. Set the router to log anything coming from
192.168.1.2 (external NIC) and found some packets destined for 192.169.16.2.
Looks like I made a typo in specifying the DNS server address in the
external NIC properties - should have been 192.168.16.2

Runs as sweet as anything now.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Best Regards
