Setup:
SBS2000
ISA
Exchange
SQL

Lately it seems as if the server/network has gotten slower and slower.
After the server runs for a fews hours the RAM seems to climb up to over a
gig in use. However the server only has 512 of physical RAM. I know that
Store.exe is designed to use all and let ram go as it needed be however it
only uses around 200meg at most. I believe that the RAM issue is having a
adverse effect on network preformance. Once the ram usages gets that high I
can hardy use the server. There are long pauses between anything I do and
using it is almost impossble until a restart is made. As well as the
network seems to be effected as well. There are slight delays in accessing
drives andor mail. I am going to stay after today and hopefully pinpoint the
problem to the ram. I know with SQL I need more ram but it is not really
used at the moment except for one small database Would just adding ram do
the trick or might that just prolog the time it takes for the system to
become slow. Any ideas, nothing new has been installed or changed lately?

You have answered your own question, add some Ram. One gig is about the
minimum a SBS server should have, I always start at 2 Gig. Ram is cheap...

SBS2000 should just recognize the ram correct? I should not have to add any
switches or anything right?

Matthew

We bumped our RAM up from 512 MB to 2.5 GB.

I then found out that I had to manually increase the paging file size.

I then started getting the following error messages:

Event ID 9582, MSExchangeIS
The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in
such a way that performance may be affected. It is highly recommended that
you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

The best advice I've heard so far was to decrease the RAM - 2.5 GB is too
much for SBS 2000.

You should not have to do anything in software other than, as Matthew points
out, increase the pagefile size. I'd up the pagefile to 2gb, then install
1gb RAM. If you increase the pagefile prior to shutting down the server to
add the RAM, you won't have to look at a bunch of error messages that will
pop up if you have a pagefile that is smaller than the RAM size.
