I have a Dell Latitude latop with Windows XP SP1 pro.

I find that when I change static IP addresses (which is a lot from customer
to customer) it takes XP about 30 seconds to bind the IP to the NIC, in
which time the LAN settings dialog box appears to hang! After 30 seconds to
a minute its fine!

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know the cure!

Regards

Austin

I'm curious as of why you need to change those IP addresses that frequently?
Heck... why do you have static IPs on a workstation on the first place?

In my experience the process is quite slow 15-30 seconds to do... but its
not something that I do very often (at least on a workstation).

Typical for me also. I don't consider it a problem but just how things
work. I just get ips from dhcp. Dhcp runs at almost every account we
manage.

Because it's easier to keep track which workstation has which IP. It
makes logfile reading easier and in addition you can bind one IP to
one MAC Address. Thus the casual intruder sitting _in_ your LAN (due
to any reason) does not automatically get access to your LAN as soon
as he connects to an RJ45 port (being patched do to bad luck). He
would have to find out the MAC adress to spoof plus the right IP
adress range.

And sometimes (for smaller companies and less users) it's easier to
segment LAN's on switches using class C networks with static IP's.

Wolfgang

Marina,

Are you using MultiNetworkManager to switch domains? And are you happy with
its ability to do so?

Thanks,

JoeM

Hi Joe,

I'm not happy, I'm very really very happy with this program (sorry, it has
been a long day and night, can't think of any other words).
You can download a trialversion which will fully work for 30 days.
