Hey Guys

Just a stupid question

If i take a look at the total size of the user mail boxes under usage
reports in system management under is says approx 9 gb in size, however when
I look at the size of the edb and stm file they are nearly 16gb in size.

How can this be so, already we have had a problem with the database going
over 16gb and stopping exchange so we ran a defrag but it only reduced the
database by about 300mb.

Can someone advice me on what is going on

Many thanks

Scott

Hi Scott,

Let the users clean out their mailboxes and delete items in sent items.
Especially attachments can grow the Exchange databases quickly. Let them use
archiving, which will archive the mailbox and put it on their local drive.
You don't want to hit the 16 Gb limit, as you will have to leave SBS
completely.

Thank you Marina for the advice

I did that and it still the file size is nearly 16gb in size however the
report shows the mailboxes to be around 9gb in size.

I have just completed a defrag and still no luck, is there something I am
missing why would the report say it is 9gb and the file size be around the
16gb mark ?

cheers

Scott

Hi Scott,

The private store and the public store are 2 different things. What exactly
is that report telling you? And which files are you looking at for the 9 and
16 Gb?

Hi Marina

Thanks for the help so far

The report is a total under all the mailbox users.

I get the 16gb from going into the mdbdata folder where the priv1.edb and
priv1.STM folders are and it tells me the size of the files in there.

Hope you can help

Hi Scott,

If the mdbdata folder is telling you that the priv-files are almost 16 Gb,
you will have to do something really quick. You will have to ask your users
to do some heavy cleaning in their mailboxes.

and keep in mind that if you do clean up (delete) old emails, that any
