I have a SBS-2000 fully setup and everything was working fine ...

A week ago, I tried to follow Microsoft Article # 321721 to Share SMTP Address Space for the Company (company.com) to enable the e-mail communication to a remote office which has another SBS-2000 fully configured as bothe offices use the same @company.com address ...

At Office-1, I followed Method-1, which involved adding a new SMTP Connector and adjusting what Exchange 2000 should Authoratitive for, it didn't work correctly .... And I wasn't able to send any emails from Office-1 to Office-2 ... I went back with the settings to keep everything as it was before ...

At Office-2, I decided to used the Second Method, which is simply to add to the Default SMTP Virtual Server the Mail Host (mail.company.com) that should handle unresolved addresses ... It worked fine and I was able to send without any problems from Oddice-2 to Office-1 ...

So, I decided to do this method at Office-1 .... It doesn't want to work ... No NDR messages ... Anf I can see under the Queues of the Default SMTP Virtual Server a Connector saying
"SmallBusiness SMTP connector (SMTP Connector - Remote delivery)"
The messages are just hanging there ...

I don't know what;s wrong with the SBS-2000 at Office-1 ... Is there any thing that I forget to correct in when I rolled-back the steps of Method-1 ...

Appreciate your help ...

Hi Reda!

I would like to start by saying that what you want to do is not trivial at
all. There was a discussion sometime ago on what's the best way to acomplish
this and I don't think we ever came up with a way. Unless you are willing to
add something to distinguish the two offices I'm not sure how you could
acomplish it (i.e @office1.domain.com and @office2.domain.com).

In any event, this is what you are trying to do know (or at least what I
think you are trying to do):

1) Point your MX records to the server on Office1 (mail1.yourdomain.com)
2) Set the Exchange on Office1 to "Forward all mail with unresolved
recipients" to Office2 (mail2.yourdomain.com).

At this point all mail coming in from the internet or Office1 should reach
its intended recipient and the server at Office2 will issue an NDR if the
mailbox doesn't exist in either server. The only problem is that Office2
cannot send mail to Office1.

To solve this there may be a way to tell Exchange to forward mail (creating
a new SMTP connector) for the specific addresses existing on Office 1, but I
don't know it. You cannot simply tell the Office2 server to forward all mail
to Office1 because you will create a loop for addresses that don't exists on
either server. You see the problem?

BTW-> How many accounts are we talking about in each server?

Thanks Javier for your response ...

So why does setting unresolved addresses on SBS-2000 in Office-1 to be forwarded to mail.company.com (located at the ISP) works and it doesn't want to work on SBS-2000 in Office-2 ???

For your information Office-1 has 32 Users while Office-2 has 12 Users ...

Also, is there a way to get the Exchange Server in Office-2 to its initial state, as I think that there is something wrong after applying Method-1 in Microsoft Article # 321721 to Share the SMTP Address Space and tried to roll-back the steps, but I feel that there something is not right ...

Any recommendations ...

Thanks again ...

I guess it is possible that there is some misconfiguration there from the
previous attempt. However, like I said before you cannot put both severs
that way because you will have a mail loop going on since no server will
issue an NDR.

> For your information Office-1 has 32 Users while Office-2 has 12 Users ...

I was thinking of placing Office2 to download mail using the POP3 connector
from Office1 and get the problem solved. But, with 12 accounts is not the
optimal solution. I'm assuming that you are not using the POP3 connector at
all right now.

Unfortunately, I don't think theres a way to revert all previous changes
automatically. I would rerun ICW just to see what happens. What exactly is
not working that makes you think that there is something wrong (apart of the
sharing SMTP space issue)?

> Any recommendations ...

You may want to post in one of the Exchange NGs your question. More
specifically, I would ask if its possible to create a SMTP connector that
forwards specific email accounts to another server. If you do ask the
question... please let us know (post the NG and title/time of the thread). I
would be interested in seeing how this one goes.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Cheers,
