We have a new SBS2000 server with Shared Fax installed. It will receive
faxes from most people, but not from others. We are using a US Robotics
External 56K modem, class 1. Application Log error #32091; "The Shared Fax
Service failed to receive a fax", has been recorded when the fax fails.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Check the "Rings before answer" value for the fax device and make sure it's
not set to 1. To check this setting, open Shared Fax Service Manager,
select "Devices and Providers" and then Devices, right-click the modem and
then click Properties. The "Rings before answer" value should be 2 or
above. Otherwise, we see these 32091 events. If that doesn't apply, try
reducing the modem's baud rate to 9600 BPS. This setting will be in the
modem properties in Device Manager. On a US Robotics, I think it will be on
the Modem tab in properties labeled as "Maximum Port Speed." I also have
seen one case where line noise was the culprit. Let me know if these
suggestions help.

Sincerely,
Michael Sadoff
