OT: Migrate NT4.0 to W2K
Hi,
Not related to SBS, but maybe someone has done this before.
I would like to upgrade a NT4.0 domain to a W2K AD domain, but the current
PDC is vital to the network.
Is it possible to add a BDC, promote this to a PDC, remove the original PDC
and upgrade the promoted PDC to W2K?
So if the upgrade fails, I can put the original PDC back in the network.

POP3 & SBS Exchange
I've tried setting up the POP3 connector but continually
get Application Errors on the event viewer "Failed to
check POP3 account for username at host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on
port 110. The error was 10065"
Looking at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-

This was the only support article I could find.
Not sure where to go now.

High CPU Usage 90%+
After having rebuilt our server any previous problems have now been solved
however with nothing running on the server the CPU usage is very high 90%+.
The usage graph goes from 0% to 100% and back to 0% constantly over and
over.
This is with no users accessing the server...
Task manager does not show any other processes using a signiciant amount of
CPU other the "System idle processes"
It's a basic BSB2000 server running Echange, SQL Server and ISA
What is the best way to diagnose this ?

Outlook Web Access
Hello all,
I have an SBS 2000 server that remote clients log onto
via a VPN. There is one login and password that all of
them use. I have implemented a policy that only allows
them to go to one domain, and I have allowed them access
to Outlook Web Access.
Internet access works great, but there are problems when
they try to log onto OWA - it keeps prompting them for a
username and password while the mailbox loads in the
background. I know it has something to do with ISA
because if I tell Internet Explorer not to use the proxy,
it loads fine.
So, I tried creating an Internet Explorer shortcut that
points to the server internally (i.e.
http://myserver/exchange) and that works. However, it
does not prompt for a username and password to
differentiate between the users' mailboxes - it uses the
username and password that they all log on with.
I also tried changing the directory security in IIS for
the Exchange directory with unsuccessful results - even
if a prompt is given, it does not attach to the
username's inbox.
Could any of you give me an idea how we can access OWA on
the INTERNAL network and have it prompt us for a username
and password to log into individual mailboxes?
TIA !!!

Joining SBS 2003 Domain
I set up SBS 2003 RC in a VMWare virtual machine to get
familiar with the administration of SBS 2003.
The install went perfectly (except it complained because
the VM had only one "network card"). All the services
appear to be working, Exchange is sending and receiving
mail from my ISP OK, the IE browser communicates with
the "world". All apears well.
Now here's the rub. I set up a second VMWare VM and
installed XP Pro on it and attempted to join the SBS
domain. The XP Pro machine communicates via IE with the
SBS's web pages (as well as the "world"). When I run the
Join the Domain from the Web page it tells me that it
can't find my usernames (I tried administrator, my Admin
account, and a couple of other admin"test" accounts"). I
even tried to join a real PC from the Network to it and
got the same results.
The SBS "pings" both by IP and host name and I can get to
the Web pages in SBS with no problem.
As far as hardware goes, it's installed on a Dell server
w/ 1 gig of memory, a 2 gig processor, 140 hard drive.
The VM machine has 512 meg of memory. Now the Dell
server communicates over a wireless lan (Linksys G 2.4
ghz) with the hard wired network (but that shouldn't
bother the two VM machines I set up)
Anybody got any suggestions? I'm stuck..

Article 283268
Hi! This article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283628 gives a little
note at the bottom
"Note: You will not be able to use a PPTP connection by using either the

connections to be made successfully. "
How do I configure a gateway address? My laptop does use the ISA firewall

Slow system shudown after In-place upgrade.
I have noticed a common symptom of several SBS 2000 upgrades from 4.5. The
systems take a long time (5-10 minutes) to shutdown. If I stop the Exchange
server it shuts down in a reasonable amount of time (less than 2 min).
I have successfully upgraded 3 separate SBS 4.5 to 2000 and have noticed
this in each case. I have not noticed this in any of my fresh installs of

Any ideas?
Could it have anything to do with service dependencies?

Disaster recovery plan
Given my client's limited budget for a near line server here is what I
proposed. If anyone has any comments/flames/gotchas please let me know.
Current config:
SBS 2K Sp1 on a PIII built upon SCSI HD's (2 X 72 gig). Currently we have 3
partitions on each drive and each is mirrored in software. Backup is
provided by ARCServe 2000, minus any agents. Exchange is backed up to a
file via a scheduled ntbackup job and then ARCServe grabs this file.
Proposal:
Install a removable large IDE drive, periodically ghost the entire
server (paritition the large IDE first with 3 partitions) using ghost and
partition to partition ghost.
Disaster recovery:
If the server dies and it is bad, throw the IDE drive in a system
similiar in specs to existing server, bring it up on IDE, and then dump data
back with ARCServe, dump online Exchange backup file to the HD and then use
ntbackup to restore Exchange.
Ideas? Thoughts? Bad idea?

Exchange or SQL on different server
Hi all,
Before switching off in droves, this isn't the usual question about
SBS2K media and installing it elsewhere. Let me explain:
I have a client who is looking at adding an extra server to their
SBS2K set-up to spread some load, primarily because SQL is vey
precious to them.
What I want to know is this. Assuming licensing is all correct, is
there a problem with running a new installation of either Exchange or
SQL on the new server. The SBS install of either of them would be
removed from the original server. So for example I could end up with
the original server running with "SBS" E2K and the new server running
"full product" SQL2K.
My biggest concern is whether Exchange would be the biggest stumbling
block if run elsewhere, because of the AD tie in. On the face of it it
should be like anywhere else running "normal" AD and E2K, but SBS does
do some bizarre things!
Thanks in advance to those of you who i) stuck with the description
ii) can understand it and have an answer!!!!

New URL
We have been using the email format someone@elmmax.co.uk for some time and
elmmax.co.uk is the domain that the SBS server is setup to use.
We are changing the firm name and in future will use someone@elmhirst.biz. I
am not reconfiguring the server and email will still be coming to both
addresses. I can get the routing of email addresses sorted by editing
individually the user properties page to add an extra smtp address to the
list of e-mail addresses.
To do this to everyone is a pain and I will have to remember to do this
everytime we add a new user.
There must be an easier way to do this globally so that mail addressed to
fred@elmhirst.biz ends up in the mailbox for fred@elmmax.co.uk
Any ideas?

Can send but not receive
I had another posting over the weekend "Oh No..." this is an extension of
those issues.
Background:
Machine had been hacked in a remote office - one user password stolen.
Using that on Port25 to send thru the SBS server. Disabled user account and
began cleaning machine.
Following Susan and Jim's advice and the MS article they pointed to me - I
was able to successfully clean the vs1 bad mail folder. it only had 7GB of
messages (over 400,000 total in the last 30 days).
After doing that I attempted to secure the machine by removing the check box
"allow any computer to relay that authenticates...". per Jim's suggestion I
also removed the IP's listed above.
I noticed no mail was flowing in-bound.
Reran the ICW - it replaced the Ip's that I removed other settings were left
alone. But again - no inbound email was received.
So now I go to my full-time job and attempt to send an email to the other
domain. Does not bounce. Log in via VPN - it is not in my in-box. Nothing
inbound shows up. Can send outbound just fine.
I grabbed the logs and they looked as follows:

IP config with DMZ
Hi,
I'm wondering whether I have NAT setup correctly as I just
read an article that says I should point router NAT
translation to the INTERNAL NIC of SBS2000. I also want to
include a new server in the DMZ to handle mail using
SpamLion, before mail is allowed to go to exchange.
I have setup our network layout like this:
internet <-> Cisco ADSL Router <-> SBSserver ext. NIC <->
SBS server int. NIC <-> Workstations.
on the ADSL router I have an external IP in the
80.xxx.xxx.xxx range
On the internal NIC of the ADSL router I configured
172.26.0.100
The external NIC of the SBS server has 172.26.0.99
The internal NIC of the SBS server has 192.168.16.2
All the workstations are in 192.168.16.xxx
We run intrusion detection and firewall on the Cisco ADSL
router as well.
The first question is:
- Should I NAT to the internal NIC of the SBS server, on
the ADSL router? I have strange behaviour of the ISA
server, that suspects rules being not applied. Please find
current config below:
ip nat inside source list 1 interface ATM0.1 overload
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 53 80.33.51.60
53 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 80 80.33.51.60
80 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 25 80.33.51.60
25 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 443
80.33.51.60 443 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.25 25 80.33.51.60
25 extendable
The second question is:
- If I'm going to put in an extra server for SpamLion, I
would configure it with a DMZ IP of p.e. 172.26.0.101 and
have smtp port traffic first go to the new server and only
after approval to Exchange. What do I need to configure in
SBS2000 to have ISA accept incoming mail from that new
server's IP?
Thanks!

NEWBIE:- non-NAT and smtp query?
Hi everyone,
Following continuous problems with the SBS POP3 connector I am upgrading my
ADSL connection to allow incoming SMTP mail and have my own mail server.
Trouble is the smtp option is non-NAT and I am unsure about how to set it
up. I just need email and Internet access for all clients. Previously I just
had one IP address as the POP3 mail connection was NAT based. I have now
been issued with four IP addresses by my ISP. I understand I need one for
the SMTP mail server, but what do I do with the other three?
Obviously without the protection of NAT I will need to use the ISA firewall
which I do anyway. My router book and ISP helpfiles are all geared towards
issuing each client with its own IP address in a standard non-sbs type
network. All my 17 clients are issued addresses by the DHCP server in the
range 10.0.0.1- upwards presumably this is unchanged. Is there a good step
by step guide to setting it up? Do I need to disable NAT in my router which
has NAT enable by default?
