Connectcomputer Private error
Part 1
I am trying to join a SBS2003 Domain using connectcomputer URL on the
server. It asks for a login which is fine and then the user names come up
which is normal. I assign a local user to the new user, which is great, but
when I hit next an error comes up saying " The following user settings are
private - User1" It proceeds to explain to tell you in Sharing And Security
untick the Private box. I do not have a single Sharing and Security Tab
(under My Computer->Properties) but a separate Security and a separate
sharing where I find no reference to Private.
Part 2:
I tried another profile and I get to the next step where it asks me for the
associated computer name and the computer is not listed there.

installing ISA on SBS2000 OEM
Hello,
I've installed SBS2000 OEM without ISA server few months ago.
Now I'd like to add ISA Server, but when I try to install it from the SBS
CD # 2 , ISA Setup asks me for a 10-digit serial number.
Is it possible to install it without troubles?
I tried to run SBS setup from SBS2000 CD #1, but I had strange feeling like
it wanted to format my server's hard disk.
Please help me how to install ISA on already installed SBS2000 OEM.
Or maybe there is another simple way to trace my users' Internet traffic?

VPN with 2 SBS server sites.
Hi, I have a quick ? that I hope is just something simple I hope. I have a
sbs2000 server I am administering at the office and then I have one at my
home which I have setup but I cannot get the VPN between the two to work.
What is the best why to do this. They both have ISA server using a dual
nic setup. I can login from a normal workstation anywhere so I know the vpn
works at the office.
As far as checks. It does login but I cant ping the server name howeer I
can ping the remote server ip. Seems to be a dns issue. Is there a better
way to set this up?

Can't mount a restored information store
Hi Folks
Hope you can help. Following a disk catastrophy at the weekend, I have been
trying to restore an Exchange Server 2K backup. For reasons too painful to
go into, I only have access to an old back up (over a month ago). I have
restored this to a new disk but I cannot pursuade Exchange to mount it. It
fails with the error message 'An internal processing error...... ID No
c1041724'.
According to the MS KB, this is typically a problem with inconsistencies
between the databases and the log file. I have followed the advice in KB
article 301438. When I try to re-backup the database, MS Backup gives an
error the significant bit of which is:
"backup started on 24/05/2004 at 17:00.
WARNING: Portions of "\Private Information Store (CUREE01)" cannot be read.
The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.
WARNING: Portions of "\Public Information Store (CUREE01)" cannot be read.
The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.
WARNING: Portions of "\Log Files" cannot be read. The backed up data is
corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.
Backup completed on 24/05/2004 at 17:00.
Directories: 4
Files: 0
Bytes: 0
Time: 1 second"
However, when I run eseutil /mh on the stores, I get no errors and it
completes in 2 seconds. Eseutil /p on the log file also completes without
error. But if I delete the log files and try again to mount the stores, the
error is the same and another E00.log file (about 5 MB) is created along
with an E00.chk and a res1.log and res2.log file.
Is there anything I can do to get this store into a useable state? I have a
major disaster on my hands if not! The KB warns against a 'hard repair'
which it says will not result in useable data, so I am trying to avoid this.
Thanks for your help, if you can.

Moving to new server
Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide to moving a working SBS2000
installation over to a new server? I am particularly concerned about things
like the additional SBS2k CALs which are on floppy. Nothing from the old
machine will be used in the new one, with the exception of the software
licenses.
I had a quick look around smallbizserver.net and although there is a guide
for 2003, it didn't cover the issues I was looking for. Searching
support.microsoft.com didn't really help, either.

Installing Terminal Server
Every document Iâ??ve read about installing Terminal server started like this:
Installing Your Terminal Serve
To install Terminal Server on a computer running Windows Server 2003
1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs
2.Click Add/Remove Windows Components
3.In the dialog box, select Terminal Server
The trouble is that this option is not available in the Windows Components, only Terminal Server Licensingâ?¦ Why this is so and how on earth could I install Terminal Server Tag: Setting up a Template Login Tag: 158693
IMAP versus Microsoft Exchange Server Account ??? differnece..
I'm a little confused about the difference between a "IMAP" account and a
"Microsoft Exchange Server" account.
What is the big difference? My question is: Does IMAP leaves you're emails
on the server?
I have configured a client with the type="Microsoft Exchange Server" and i
see that the mail are kept on the server. he always syncronize the messages.
Thats ok, understand that
But with imap, also configured it, i don't see a syncronization....
they say is downloads personal folders that are shared. But does you're
emails stays in the personal folders or do you download them on you'r epc
without leaving it on you're pc but still access to a public folder?
Or does IMAP keeps a copy on the server.?

There is a problem with how the POP3 connector processes certain
messages downloaded from a POP3 server. This problem could result in the
POP3 connector accidentally re-sending certain messages to recipients
who are not part of the SBS server e-mail domain.
This may happen only in the cases where the POP3 connector is used to
download mail from an external POP account. Customers using Exchange to
host their mail internally will not experience this problem. This update
resolves this issue.
All SBS customers are encouraged to install this update.

In other news....
A study on identity theft by Judith Collins, a professor at Michigan
State University, to be released later this year, shows that up to 70%
of identity theft cases result from the theft of personal information by
company insiders, such as employees or company bosses. The study
examined 1,037 identity theft cases from around the US, revealing that
50% of identities were definitely stolen by insiders and another 20%
were probably stolen by insiders. Many instances of insider identity
theft occur in the financial services and medical sectors, sometimes as
part of organized crime schemes. The findings somewhat contradict the
conventional wisdom that identity theft results mainly from hacking into
databases and 'dumpster diving'. A bill has been introduced in the US
House of Representatives, the 'Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act,'
which would punish identity theft committed by insiders more severely
than other forms of identity theft.

At a hearing of the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation
Committee, on May 20, 2004, on the effectiveness of the Controlling the
Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of
2003, lawmakers urged the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to become more aggressive in going after
illegal spammers. According to FTC chairman Timothy J. Muris, the FTC
has already pursued several spammers under the Act, while the FBI is
poised to launch criminal cases against as many as 50 leading spammers
later this year, according to Jana Monroe, the FBI's assistant director
of the cyber division. Committee chairman Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.)
suggested that law enforcement agencies should target companies that use
spammers to advertise their products if they are unable to apprehend the
spammers themselves. It is still unclear how well the CAN-SPAM Act will
work. By some accounts the number of spam e-mails continues to grow, but
experts believe law enforcement also needs time to build cases against
violators.

Regulators in several US states, including New York and California, are
moving ahead with rules concerning Internet telephony and
voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) technologies, potentially bringing
them in conflict with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which
is expected to rule on VoIP regulation in the next few months. A debate
has been raging over whether, and to what extent, to regulate the
emerging Net-phoning market. One of the points of contention is whether
VoIP and similar services should be regulated like 'traditional'
telephone services.

enterprise level, on e-mail servers and gateways, or at the client level

Due to the introduction in recent years of a variety of cyber
security-related laws and regulations, including the Gramm-Leach-Bliley
Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Basel II Accord, regulation
compliance has replaced anti-hacker protection and other security
concerns as the most important issue for many large organizations. Laws
and regulations contain numerous requirements, particularly concerning
protecting personal information, but do not specify which security and
privacy tools and technologies should be used to comply. This has opened
up a huge market for resellers and systems integrators that develop
company-specific solutions to help ensure regulation compliance.

Multiple SBS Domain
Hello All
I am new to SBS2003. I understand there can be only one domain controller in a SBS domain and it must be the root. I also understand there can't be any child domains. Can I have multiple domain trees on a SBS domain server? I would like to run two domains. I know that you can't run domain trusts in SBS but that would be OK. If I can run multiple domains then could you point me to where I would set that up just to get me started

wins server
Due to a hardware failure in sbs 2000 and the time
consumed in its repair of both mail and all other
services, we decided to put a new sbs 2000 server in place.
this was installed and pathched and all users setup, using
the same server name and domain name
all seemed fine untill we introduced it to the network,
the first thing we noticed was that some units would not
log in, so we decided to remove the unit from the domain
and reregit back to the domain. On rereg it stated the
domain could not be contacted yet its ip was provided by
the server and it had been placed in the servers dns. If
you log into the network as administrator services can be
seen but we dont have a master browser service.
Looking at the server we find Wins service has stated but
MSwins service in the mmc state it cannot connect due
to "path not found" we seen to have lost some connectivity
within out network and although we have reinstalled all
the tcp services and network services we cannot get wins
to correctly connect. Technet has provided only one
solution to this type of problem relating to file/print
sharing and remote reg service but they seem fine.

2. Give a static IP to access point?
3. Will I have to do any other configuration from the server?
I think something is missing here. Will multiple users be able to log in

SBS 2003 - Appletalk zone is blank! How do you add the zone
Hello
I just installed a SBS 2003 server in my network which replaced an old NT 4.0 SBS. I have successfully setup all network services with the exception of Appletalk. I install File and Print services for Macintosh and it auto installs Appletalk. Looking at the properties of Appletalk reveals that there is no zone. I have tried various ways of adding the zone, installing the protocols in different orders and I am still getting a blank zone
I would assume that the zone should be configured as domainname.local. i tried connecting to this on a couple of MACs with the syntax: afp://domainname.local:domainname (like in previous nt environment) and it will not enumerate the zone
I have also tried removing the .local and no go
What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help offered
Sincerely

Exchange on SBS2000 replacement server
I am moving to a new server and need to keep everything
exactly the same as the old server(improved hardware).
I have used a toll called Ideal Migration and I have
moved all of the users, groups, printers, ports,
permissions etc.
This tool did not however move the mail boxes for
Exchange. I have exported the mail boxes to a memeber
server and I have moved all of the data and profiles to
the member server(This enables me to just remove the
original DC and put the new one in place). I can then
move all of the data and create the shared folders.
My question is does anyone know
1)Ideal Migration migrates the network shares for the
users?
2) When I migrate the pkl file back in to the new server
do I need to do anything else for Exchange?
3) When I exported the mail boxes using the migration
tool it took about 7 hours. Is this normal?
4) When I setup SBS2K on the replacement hardware the M
drive appears to have a folder in it that is not named

Trend csms download
Hi
We have just purchased trend client server messaging suit for sbs 2000. The
dealer has sent us the keys but not the disk and has asked us to download
it. What is the link to download trend csms for sbs2000? There are several
products on the site and I don't want to download the wrong one.
Thanks

shot in the dark - routing issues
Hi,
I we are running SBS2000. We are building an application
which will connect to a 3rd party vendor via a private
point-to-point frame relay connection.
Our internal SBS network is on the 192.168.16.0 subnet and
the private network is on the 192.168.64.0 subnet. We
have a webserver which will recieve requests, contact the
private server, get a response and send it back to the
client. The webserver has an IP on the internal and
private network (it essentially is straddling both
networks). I have added a static route on the webserver
sending all requests for a certain IP to the private
network.
>>route add xxx.xxx.xxx.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.64.1
From the webserver, I can successfully ping the private
3rd party server via our private network (tracert goes
through the private gateway). When I run the tcpClient
app (called from the webserver), it tries to connect via
the internal gateway (with the static route, it should be
using the private gateway). Why would pinging route
properly but the client not? Is there something I need to
do at the SBServer level to force all requests for the
private network to the private gateway? (I thought the
static route would handle it)
I'm kinda stumped... Tag: Setting up a Template Login Tag: 158554
SBS Terminals Svcs / 2000 v 2003
I read over and over that using Term Svcs (Remote Admin) to runn app's (mostly Office apps in my case) is not a good idea. I work 50-50 out of 2 locations and need to consolidate data/email that is now duplicated between stand-alone desktops at each location. Friend of mine uses SBS/TS to run app's and thinks it's the most efficient way to do this - since only screen data goes across the net. I sometimes work with large ACCESS databases, etc. that would pump a lot of data. TS wouldn't be used by anyone besides myself. How bad an idea is it really?
I'm installing SBS 2000 after procrastinating for 2 years - should I really be installing 2003, or should I get 2000 working and upgrade when I need it
Many thanks. Tag: Setting up a Template Login Tag: 158552
Client Win Auto Upd not working
The workstations in the domain behind the ISA server are unable to get

Description:
Unable to connect: Windows is unable to connect to the Automatic Updates
service and therefore cannot download and install updates according to
the set schedule. Windows will continue to try to establish a

I have checked and applied (if applicable) the following: Q241783 ,
Q312955 , Q328010 , Q824208 , Q830750
I have made sure WPAD is in DNS. I have opened 443 on the ISA server
using a packet filter. Workstations fail regardless if they are using
the WSP Firewall Client or not. All use the IP address of the ISA
server as the proxy server, port 8080.
I've posted here before with no replies, so I hope this is enough
information to start.
BTW, from the workstation just going to www.windowsupdate.com and doing
an update works just fine. Tag: Setting up a Template Login Tag: 158551
VPN Solution suggestions
I actually have two questions. The first is dealing with
SBS2K and WinGate. Is this a good solution for a VPN or is
their something better? My next question has to do with
SBS2K3 with 1 NIC setup and a Linksys BEFVP41 VPN router.
Do I just setup the router and allow access to the LAN or
do I have to setup anything in SBS2K3? I figure that ISA
Server won't be a problem since I'm using the 1 NIC setup.
All recommendations are welcome, however, I must add that
the 1 NIC setup was the work of another consultant who
setup the wiring closet in such a way that I cannot safely
or even neatly implement a 2 NIC setup. I have informed
the client that this is not the recommended setup, but
their response is to work with what is available.
Thanks in advance,

I've installed it on two servers so far - haven't noticed any issues yet.
The SBS 2000 wanted a reboot, the standalone Win2k server didn't ask.
Note: MS says to install this on machines having only ISA Management or the

How do I fix this?
I've been playing with the NTDSUTIL but nothing seems to be helping. I
haven't really even done anything with the server yet, as I've been waiting

Why would this happen though??

VPN error 800
I think that one of the MS hotfixes has whacked the VPN setup, and is
causing Error 800. Today, I was at a client site that I haven't been
to in about a month, and did all the MS hotfixes and updates in that
time period.
I just tried to VPN in remotely to that site, and I get Error 800.
The VPN to this site has been absolutely flawless to this point.
This happened at another client site previously - same symptoms. (See

Webmail access issue
Help Plz,
I have a few user accounts that are unable to log on to their webmail
accounts internally and externally, other users are fine and able to. It
always replys with
"You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Ensure that your user
name and password are correct, and then try again."
Their usernames and passwords are correct and have been reset in an attempt
to find a resolve.
Any ideas?

Users on slow connections + private contacts in OWA
Hi,
SBS2K
W2K + WinXP
Outlook2000 (+ Outlook XP)
1)
I've been trying to figure out how to setup users on slow connections.
Users are using VPN to connect to the Exchange-server, but some are
having problems because of the rather small connection they're using. So
I was hoping to set up the users to use "Offline-mode" and then
synchronise once in a while, (probably every 5 min - which should
happend in the background and thereby not "lock" Outlook when opening
rather large emails). But... At the same time users have the need to
access each others calendars, which is not possible in off-line mode. Or
am I wrong? What I'm ideally looking for is having all mail synchronised
to a local copy on the client but at the same time keeping the option to
watch others calendars. Local mail but online calendar. Is this possible
or are there alternatives (of course besides looking at the bandwidth)?
2)
When you create a new email in Outlook, one can press "To:" and get
access to GAL *and* Contacts. But this not possible in the OWA - only
the GAL is available by search. Am I wrong, is it working as designed, or ??

Client Internet Connection Problem
Client workstation on a new SBS 2003 domain. Workstation is using WinXP with
SP1, IE 6 with all patches and updates and Outlook 2003. Also is running
Norton AV Corp 8.1 and regular Adaware scans w/proper updates of course.
When the user tries to access the Internet using IE, she will get the error
"DNS/page cannot be found". This happens more times than not. If she clicks
refresh, the page will display.
This is apparently happening only on this PC (there are 11 others). This did
not happen with the prior workgroup setup, only since the SBS conversion.
It seems to be a DNS type error but since all PCs are setup with DHCP to
populate the settings, I would think that would be ruled out especially
since this appears to be the only PC affected.
Any ideas?

Terminal server issue, etc .. etc..
Hello all,
I hope this isnt a repost, as I got an error for the 1st posting of
this message.
1. I have installed terminal services on my SBS2000 server for remote
administration purposes, running ISA, Exchange, DNS etc ...
The terminal services were running great on day one, on day two I
could not use the SBS2000 admin console properly. I can not see any
users or do any changes to it.
2. I have a VERY annoying item in my application log that keeps coming
up as:
Source: Userenv
Category: None
Event ID: 1000
User: NT authority\System
Computer: My SBS2000 server
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value
(1326).
I have looked this sucker up online and all articles I find do not
make sense to me.
3. I ALSO have a rather annoying Security log entry repeating,
Source: Security
Category: Account Logon
Type: Failure

User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: My SBS2000 server
Pre-Authentication failed:
User name: Administrator

Exchange mailbox rule problem
Hello there.
I'm having a problem with an automatic rule which I have created in
the Outlook 2002 rules wizard.
We have Symantec Filtering for Exchange and also Symantec Anti Virus
for SMTP gateways installed on our SBS 2000. The email notification
messages that are automatically generated by the anti virus system
when a virus is detected in incoming email messages have become a real
hinderance.
We started to try to move these notification messages out of the users
inboxes by creating a rule to pick out any message with "quarantined
attachment" in the message header and move it to a secondary email
folder in the mailboxes' inbox.
The strange thing is that this method works fine when you opt to "run
the rule now" manually but it fails to move these messages
automatically. If any other criteria for re-directing messages is used
it works fine too.
I have tried creating a message using my webmail account and attaching
a text file called quarantined attachment.txt. This puts the relavent
text into the message header. When these messages arrive in my users
mailboxes the rule works automatically.
Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour with Outlook 2002 /
Exchange Server 2000? Has anyone got any ideas how I can work around
this problem?
Thanks very Much,
Shane Molloy.

SBS2000 Upgrade options?????
We currently have a client running SBS2000 with approx 45 users.
The company is just about to expand by another 40 users this will push us
over the thershold for SBS2000 and SBS2003. I am interested in the upgrade
options available.
I have been trawling the microsoft website for dirrerent options but drawn a
couple of blanks so thought I would turn to the masses for advice.
1. I Understand a small business server is not going to be an option and I
am going to have to move to server plus exchange.
2. Microsoft offered the SBS2000 Migration Pack, which to my understanding
was to help move from SBS to seperates. But to my understanding this has now
been discontinued and replaced by the SBS2003 Transition Pack.
Now will the SBS2003 transition pack get me from SBS2000 to Server 2003
seperates or do you have to upgrade to SBS2003 which is a pointless exercise
as our clients will be too big for this.
The CAL's on the SBS2000 are OEM and there for dont have software assurance
so also I belive these cannot be used in conjunction with SBS2003.
What is going to be the cheapest option for the upgrade?
Buying Server2003 and Exchange 2003 seperate or is there a migration pack
that will take us from SBS2000 to Server 2003???
Many Thanks

Migrate mailboxes SBS2000 to Exchange 2003 Standard
Have client currently running SBS2000. Want to migrate to straight Windows
2003 environment. Aiming to exceed 75 users and have separate servers for
SQL and Exchange.
My question is regarding the best way to migrate the users mailboxes from
the SBS2000 Exchange to standard Exchange 2003.
Would we:
1. Use AD Migration Tool?
2. Use Move mailbox tool in AD Users and Computers?
3. Exmerge to PST. Reimport to new mailbox?
Ideally I would like to minimise downtime and get as much setup of the new
servers done offsite beforehand. As such I was thinking of creating a new
domain and migrating the data across. However searching the newsgroups the
prevaling approach would seem to be put the new servers into the existing
SBS2000 domain and transfer FMSO and Global Catalog. Then turn off the SBS.
I will consider either option.

She is in process of being assessed as NRP for the child living with her ex.
